Ohio History Connection

The Ohio History Connection, formerly the Ohio Historical Society, is a statewide history organization with the mission to spark discovery of Ohio’s stories. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization chartered in 1885, the Ohio History Connection carries out history services for Ohio and its citizens focused on preserving and sharing the state’s history. This includes housing the State Historic Preservation Office, the official state archives and the Community Engagement Department and managing more than 50 sites and museums across Ohio.

Certified Local Government Grant

Funding for grants to Certified Local Governments (CLG) comes from the U.S. Department of the Interior's Historic Preservation Fund (CFDA 15.904), administered by the National Park Service, which provides financial support to State Historic Preservation Offices. Under provisions of the National Historic Preservation Act, 10% of the annual appropriation to Ohio is set aside for CLG grants. Ohio's CLG grants are awarded on a 60%/40% matching basis except for projects that qualify as Funding Priorities; for these projects, the grant can cover up to 100% of the project cost. For other projects, the grant amount covers up to 60% of the total project cost with the grant recipient providing the balance. The grant recipient match can be made through any combination of cash, in-kind and donated services and materials. With the exception of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, federal funds cannot be used to meet the matching share requirements of CLG grants.

Funding Priorities

The matching fund requirement is waived if your project meets one of our Funding Priorities. These change every year, and represent specific goals outlined in the Statewide Historic Preservation Plan. If your project addresses one of these priorities the grant can cover 100% of your project costs. SHPO encourages applicants to contact our office with questions about qualifying for a Funding Priority. Examples of past funding priorities include:

• Projects to survey, nominate, or rehabilitate resources of the recent past, as defined in Ohio Modern: Preserving Our Recent Past / Statewide Historic Context, such as mid-20th century properties or properties reflecting mid-century themes such as civil rights.

• Projects that update National Register-listed historic district nominations with expanded periods of significance and/or boundary amendments. In-state historic preservation-related training for CLG commission and related bodies, design guidelines, or community-based preservation plan or plan components.

• Projects to survey, nominate or rehabilitate properties pertaining to the heritage of under-represented groups as defined in titled Reconciliation, Recovery and Resilience: A Historic Preservation Plan for Ohioans, 2023-2030, Goal 4. This can include ethnic minorities, women, and other regional, socioeconomic and ethnic groups.

The Ohio Athletic Committee Scholarship, established in 1995, supports graduating seniors from Ohio who have demonstrated outstanding community service, leadership, and academic performance. Eligible applicants must have participated in at least one Ohio Athletic Committee wrestling event or been members of a high school football team or cheerleading squad for four years, with a minimum ACT score of 25. This initiative aims to uplift the community by fostering future leaders.

Ohio's National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) offers a comprehensive curriculum designed for students in elementary to high school. Over two weeks, participants learn essential archery skills, promoting safety, technique, and self-improvement. This program enhances students' self-esteem, confidence, and attendance while fostering an inclusive environment across diverse backgrounds. By providing standardized equipment and training, NASP ensures equal opportunities for all, positively impacting behavior and academic performance in schools.

The Ohio DNR WILD School Sites: Wildlife Education Grant Program supports local schools and organizations in enhancing wildlife education. Grants fund projects that improve habitats and foster environmental stewardship among students. Eligible activities include planting gardens, installing ponds, and developing educational materials. The program aims to promote awareness of Ohio wildlife while encouraging responsible interactions with nature. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis during the fiscal year, from July 1 to June 30.

The Step Outside Grant, offered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, supports outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, and shooting sports. Grants of up to $500 are available to local government agencies and non-profit organizations for educational programs that promote these activities. Eligible applicants must demonstrate a commitment to hands-on experiences and community engagement. This initiative aims to enhance outdoor skills among families and youth in Ohio, making such activities more accessible.

The Ohio DNR Boating Safety Education Grant supports the development and promotion of safe boating programs to enhance public safety in compliance with state education laws. Grants range from $1,000 to $30,000, requiring a 25% cost share. The initiative aims to reduce boating accidents and improve education on boating risks and regulations. This program will not be available for 2026, emphasizing the importance of immediate participation.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources offers the Clean Vessel Act (CVA) Grant to support the construction and renovation of waste reception facilities for recreational vessels. This initiative, funded through the Sport Fish Restoration Account, aims to maintain clean waterways. Eligible applicants include public and private marinas, with grants covering 100% of approved costs. The scholarship reflects Parkview Health Foundation's commitment to enhancing healthcare in the region by fostering educational opportunities for its staff. Since 1878, the foundation has played a crucial role in delivering quality healthcare and improving patient experiences in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio.

Summit County Master Gardeners Scholarship Fund

Established by Summit County Master Gardeners to provide scholarships to Summit County students or residents who are interested in attending an Ohio university to pursue a two- or four-year degree in horticulture, agriculture, environmental studies or closely related field. A non-traditional student currently employed in a green industry is eligible to apply as well as members and relatives of SCMG.

The ST26 Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention Continuation Solicitation, administered by the Ohio Department of Health, focuses on reducing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. The program utilizes a data-driven public health approach, emphasizing surveillance, routine screening, and community education. With approximately $7 million available this year, the program supports various projects at general aviation airports funded by the FAA AIP Grant program. The Joseph and Kate Cutinella Scholarship Fund was established to assist students attending Kent State University pursuing a graduate or undergraduate degree in business. Personal interview may be required.
