Best Grants for Teachers Continuing Education in Maine

The MCF: Maine Theater Grant supports nonprofit professional and community theaters in Maine, fostering vibrant communities through live performances. Guidelines

To identify and support charitable endeavors that provide needed resources and services to children and families, with an emphasis on emotional and physical health, education, and social development.

The Foundation devotes its grants to the fields of education, health, and human services. The trustees have a special interest in programs that focus across two or three of the foundation’s areas of interest and in partnering with other donors with similar objectives to enable more ambitious projects.

Current Grantmaking Preferences

Job training for systems involved young people, job training for adults facing significant barriers, and limited support for innovative approaches to helping children in underserved New England communities overcome significant and often overlapping barriers to educational success.

Access to health programs for all ages, and behavioral health services for children and teens in underserved communities or otherwise facing significant barriers.

Homelessness prevention, housing assistance, food security, legal assistance, holistic family support, support for young people at risk, and support for victims of domestic violence.

Scholarships

Thanks to generous donors, The Community Foundation offers several scholarships each year that benefit students in Northeast Florida who are seeking post-secondary degrees.

Dorothea B. Shaw Scholarship

The Dorothea B. Shaw Scholarship will provide $8,000 ($2,000 per year for 4 years) to support tuition, books, fees, room & board, and degree-related expenses for a student graduating from a Duval County public or private school and attending an accredited post-secondary institution in the Northeastern United States. Northeastern states are identified as: CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, and VT. In selecting the successful candidate, the review committee will consider academic achievements, leadership experience, desire for personal growth and financial need. 

The Eastern Branch John Henry Comstock Award recognizes outstanding graduate students in entomology. Sponsored by the Entomological Society of America, it offers a fully funded trip to the ESA Annual Meeting, a $100 cash prize, and a certificate. Eligible nominees must be student members of ESA, pursuing or recently completing a graduate degree in entomology. Nominations are limited to two per university, ensuring the selection of the most deserving candidates.

NCRC Field Empowerment Fund (FEF) - Housing Counseling Services

The Field Empowerment Fund (FEF) empowers NCRC network members to level up established service lines.

The Housing Counseling Services series within FEF supports HUD-approved housing counseling agencies in driving homeownership, such as through pre-purchase counseling. In addition, the program builds agency knowledge on heirs’ property challenges to better equip first-time and low-income homebuying households with the know-how to retain intergenerational wealth.

In doing so, FEF-HCS aims to help underserved families begin their homeownership journey, with an additional goal of ensuring foresight into the long-term future of their home purchase.

The FEF-HCS series is funded in partnership with Key Bank and HSBC, and targets communities within the Key Bank and HSBC branch footprints.

Through these partnerships, $2.5 million in Key Bank geographies and $1.5 million in HSBC geographies has been allocated for the subgrants for direct-to-client housing counseling services that will be awarded in three rounds in the FEF-HCS track.

Funding Support

Awardee agencies will receive subgrants to support their housing counseling services to clients.

Knowledge Building

Awardee agencies will attend a training session on heirs’ property challenges and best practices, hosted by NCRC National Training Academy. Bolstering counselor knowledge on this topic will ensure that your agency is not only serving clients in their personal wealth-building journey now, but also helping them preserve that wealth in generations to come.

The Coby Foundation Grant is dedicated to supporting non-profit organizations in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions, focusing on innovative projects related to textiles and fashion. Applicants are encouraged to submit a letter of inquiry with a project description and budget at least nine months prior to the project start. The foundation seeks exhibitions, public programs, and publications that enhance understanding of textile arts, while promoting underrepresented artists and cultures.

The Morton-Kelly Charitable Trust, established in 1988, focuses on enhancing community connections through arts, culture, and environmental initiatives in Maine. The Trust supports projects that foster creative expression, promote historic preservation, and encourage environmental stewardship. Grant applicants can seek up to $20,000 for operating support or specific projects that align with these priorities. The Foundation emphasizes equitable access and community representation in its funding decisions.

The John T. Gorman Foundation focuses on enhancing the lives of Maine's vulnerable populations through targeted investments in education, health, and family support. Their initiatives, which are primarily invitation-only, aim to prevent Adverse Childhood Experiences and improve overall well-being. The Foundation is dedicated to addressing systemic issues such as poverty and educational disparities, striving for substantial, measurable outcomes that foster resilience in children and families across the state.

Schools and community organizations in Maine running before-school, afterschool, or summer learning programs can apply for Maine Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Center grants. Focused on academic enrichment and tutoring for Pre-K through grade 12 in high-need communities, these funds can support programs that also benefit teachers’ instructional practice and student outcomes.

The Express Health Information Outreach Awards aim to enhance public health by increasing access to biomedical information for U.S. health professionals and the general public. These awards support projects that improve health information literacy among consumers and caregivers, ensuring they can effectively find and utilize health information. Focused on partnerships and outreach to underrepresented communities, the initiative seeks to promote healthy behaviors, prevent illness, and improve health outcomes through informed decision-making.

The Organization Operations Grant, offered by the Maine Arts Commission, provides essential support for 501(c)(3) arts organizations in Maine with annual budgets exceeding $25,000. This funding aims to bolster the arts sector by sustaining organizations, infrastructure, and the creative workforce. Eligible applicants must prioritize the arts in their mission and demonstrate that at least 50% of their programming is arts-related. Awarded funds can cover operational costs incurred between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025.

Key Bank Philanthropic Support - Community Sponsorships aims to enhance community welfare by providing financial backing to nonprofit organizations. With grants ranging from $500 to $5,000, these sponsorships focus on fundraising events and operational support for initiatives that foster economic inclusion and community growth. Applications are accepted from January to October, with decisions typically made within 90 days, ensuring timely support for impactful local projects.

KeyBank's Community Grants support tax-exempt organizations that align with the Foundation's funding priorities, focusing on improving community well-being. With grants ranging from $10,000 to $25,000, eligible organizations must have an operating budget of at least $100,000 and a minimum of three years in operation. The application process is invitation-only, requiring interested organizations to submit an Expression of Interest for review, typically receiving feedback within 90 days.

The Maine Arts Commission is seeking applicants for the role of Maine State Poet Laureate, a five-year appointment starting July 1, 2026. This prestigious program, established in 1995, aims to honor a distinguished Maine poet and promote poetry statewide. The selected laureate will engage the community through various initiatives and receive an annual honorarium of $5,000. Eligible candidates must be full-time Maine residents with a notable body of poetic work.

The Libra Foundation Grant, established by Elizabeth Noyce in 1989, focuses on supporting charitable organizations in Maine. As of June 20, 2025, the foundation will pause new applications for one year while reassessing its funding priorities. It aims to provide small grants to diverse causes in areas such as arts, education, health, and more, thus empowering communities and enhancing the quality of life for all Maine citizens.

The Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) offers discretionary grants to support small-scale projects that promote health access in Maine. Eligible organizations include 501(c)(3) entities and government bodies, with funding typically up to $5,000 for local projects and $10,000 for statewide initiatives. The program emphasizes innovative approaches that align with MeHAF's mission and requires tangible outcomes within one year. Note that only one grant is permitted per organization annually.

The Mattina R. Proctor Foundation supports vital projects in education, healthcare, the arts, and environmental stewardship, primarily in Maine and Massachusetts. Established in memory of philanthropist Mattina R. Proctor, the foundation aims to fund initiatives that demonstrate a specific need, particularly in music, trades education, public health, and land conservation. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations, and preference is given to projects that directly impact underserved communities.

Retirees of Regions and its affiliated companies are eligible for the Matching Gift Program for up to 5 years after retirement (the gift date must be within the first 5 years of retirement). Regions will match donations of $25 or more, up to a total of $1,000 per year per retiree.

The Anne Sheehan Political Action Award, offered by the Maine Education Association, recognizes members who have shown exceptional commitment to advocating for public education. This award highlights the importance of political engagement in education, honoring those who actively participate in elections, lobbying, and community initiatives. Through this grant, the MEA aims to support educators dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities and ensuring equitable conditions for all students in Maine.

The Ashley Bryan Arts and Humanities Award, offered by the Maine Education Association, recognizes individuals committed to education and advocacy in the arts and humanities. It honors those who have made significant contributions promoting human and civil rights and social justice. This award supports educators dedicated to enhancing the learning experience and ensuring equitable opportunities for all students in Maine. By celebrating such achievements, MEA aims to inspire continued commitment to public education and the arts.

Service provider organizations in Maine can access funding to help groups of up to five communities with climate action, energy, and resilience planning, with awards up to US $15,000 per community. Grants from the Maine Governor's Office of Policy Innovation and the Future may benefit education-focused entities that support community climate and infrastructure planning efforts.

Municipal and tribal governments and other eligible Maine communities can access climate and energy implementation funding through the Maine Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future, with awards up to US $175,000. Enrolled or concurrently enrolling communities may fund resilience, mitigation, and planning projects that could include school- or education-related climate initiatives in partnership with local districts.

The ME Boating Facilities Fund Grant, administered by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, aims to enhance recreational boating access throughout Maine. It supports towns and agencies in developing and rehabilitating public boat launching facilities. Eligible projects include both hand-carry and trailer boat launches on tidal and non-tidal waters, with a required match of at least 25%. The fund prioritizes facilities accessible to both motorized and non-motorized watercraft.

The Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust supports nonprofit organizations in Maine through grants in five key areas: Community/Social Services, Medical, Educational, Arts/Culture, and Environment. Each area receives a designated percentage of funds, emphasizing the trust's commitment to addressing local needs. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt and operate within Maine. Notably, the trust does not fund multi-year requests or grants to individuals or religious organizations.

The Betterment Fund Grant provides financial support ranging from $10,000 to $35,000 annually, aimed at enhancing education, health, conservation, and community support in Maine. The fund prioritizes systemic community initiatives that address essential human needs while favoring projects with a proven track record in grant management. Special attention is given to projects in the Western Mountains region, although broader applications that meet their criteria may also be considered.

Full-time undergraduate mechanical or architectural engineering students pursuing HVAC&R-related studies in Maine and other ASHRAE Region I states can receive up to US $3,000 for tuition or related educational costs. The American Society of Heating Refrigerating & A C Engineers supports students at accredited programs or schools with ASHRAE student branches who meet GPA and class-rank criteria.
