Best Grants for Teachers Continuing Education in Maine

The Wendell S. Doody Memorial Scholarship Fund, established by the Maine Community Foundation, supports graduating seniors from Washburn District High School or Presque Isle High School. Cancer Prevention in Maine

Cancer remains a leading cause of death in Maine, impacting thousands of Mainers each year. Fortunately, there are many ways to reduce cancer risk and prevention certain types of cancer, ultimately reducing the burden of the disease in our state.

To support cancer prevention efforts, Maine Cancer Foundation is now accepting applications for evidence-based interventions to reduce the risk of cancer in Maine.

Cancer Prevention Focus Areas that will be considered include:

• Alcohol Use
• Environmental Factors that Impact Cancer (Arsenic, PFAs, Radon)
• HPV Vaccinations
• Obesity Prevention
• Sun Safety
• Tobacco Use and Prevention and/or Treatment

Proposals should utilize evidence-based practices in preventing cancer. Please be prepared to provide quantitative and/or qualitative data to support your proposed strategies throughout an application.

Grant Term & Request Amount

Applicants may request a 1- or 2-year grant. Request amounts up to $40,000 per year will be accepted. The maximum request over two years is $80,000. Please note, requests do not have to meet the maximum amount. Smaller, pilot projects are also encouraged.

The Mattina R. Proctor Foundation supports vital projects in education, healthcare, the arts, and environmental stewardship, primarily in Maine and Massachusetts. Established in memory of philanthropist Mattina R. Proctor, the foundation aims to fund initiatives that demonstrate a specific need, particularly in music, trades education, public health, and land conservation. The Uncle Al Scholarship Fund, established by the Maine Community Foundation, supports musicians in Franklin and Somerset counties seeking to enhance their skills on acoustic instruments, including voice. Founded in 1983, the Maine Community Foundation promotes education through strategic giving and community leadership, awarding over $3 million annually through nearly 700 scholarship funds. The Davis Family Foundation Implementation Grants support innovative projects that enhance teaching and learning at accredited colleges in New England. Established in 1985, the foundation has awarded over $140 million to improve educational outcomes and reduce costs. Applicants are encouraged to consult with program staff prior to submission. Funded projects typically focus on curriculum improvement, faculty development, and collaborative cost-reduction efforts, all aimed at enriching the undergraduate experience.

The Libra Foundation Grant, established by Elizabeth Noyce in 1989, focuses on supporting charitable organizations in Maine. As of June 20, 2025, the foundation will pause new applications for one year while reassessing its funding priorities. It aims to provide small grants to diverse causes in areas such as arts, education, health, and more, thus empowering communities and enhancing the quality of life for all Maine citizens.

Maine 501(c)(3) nonprofits advancing social mobility, workforce readiness, or affordable housing can access funding through Bank Of America Charitable Foundation’s Neighborhood Builders Program. Selected organizations receive a two-year leadership development experience plus a capacity-building grant, supporting initiatives like job training, financial literacy, small business resilience, and stable housing that may benefit educators and education-focused programs.

The Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence: Development Phase (COBRE-D) program aims to enhance biomedical research capacity in IDeA states, which historically receive low NIH funding. By providing critical support for early-career investigators and essential infrastructure, COBRE-D facilitates a long-term vision for institutions. This initiative not only supplements start-up packages for new hires but also establishes research facilities and improves administrative services, paving the way for less-resourced institutions to transition into the COBRE E/S program.

The Kindling Fund Grant, managed by SPACE Gallery, supports Maine-based artists with project grants ranging from $3,000 to $7,000. The fund emphasizes artistic collaboration and community engagement. The 2025 Giving Project Fund for Community Organizing aims to empower community-led movements in Maine, providing unrestricted support of up to $20,000 for at least five groups. This participatory grantmaking initiative, guided by a diverse cohort of donor-organizers, focuses on advancing justice in economic, environmental, racial, and social spheres. By prioritizing organizations that utilize community organizing as a strategy, the fund seeks to foster equity and address systemic issues faced by marginalized communities.

CSX Charitable Investments offers the Pride in Service Grants to support organizations that honor and assist military members and first responders. Focus areas include safety, mental health, community bridging, workforce development, and addressing food insecurity. Eligible organizations include those with 501(c)(3) status, government entities, and educational institutions. Grants aim to uplift communities and recognize the contributions of those who serve, while ensuring alignment with specific charitable criteria.

The Ronald P. Guerrette FFA Scholarship Fund, established in 1998 by friends and family, honors Ronald P. Guerrette of Caribou. This fund awards a $1,000 scholarship annually to graduating high school seniors in Maine who are FFA members and are committed to pursuing careers in farming or agriculture-related fields. The Maine Community Foundation, founded in 1983, supports this initiative by providing resources for educational opportunities across the state.

The Les Mehrhoff Botanical Research Award, established by the New England Botanical Society, supports innovative botanical research that enhances our understanding of New England's flora. Open to applicants without membership, it prioritizes projects lacking traditional funding sources. Eligible expenses include fieldwork, lab supplies, and moderate stipends. This award encourages researchers to explore unconventional inquiries and fosters a deeper appreciation for the diverse plant life in northeastern North America.

Thanks to generous donors, The Community Foundation offers several scholarships each year that benefit students in Northeast Florida who are seeking post-secondary degrees.

Dorothea B. Shaw Scholarship

The Dorothea B. Shaw Scholarship will provide $8,000 ($2,000 per year for 4 years) to support tuition, books, fees, room & board, and degree-related expenses for a student graduating from a Duval County public or private school and attending an accredited post-secondary institution in the Northeastern United States. Northeastern states are identified as: CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, and VT. In selecting the successful candidate, the review committee will consider academic achievements, leadership experience, desire for personal growth and financial need. 

The Point32Health Foundation Grant focuses on advancing equity in aging by providing multi-year, general operating grants to nonprofits in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. The foundation emphasizes collaboration with community organizations to address systemic inequities and improve health outcomes for older adults. Grant applications are accepted at various times, with specific deadlines for advocacy and social justice projects. The foundation seeks to honor the voices of those most affected by inequities.

The Rice Scholarship Fund, established by the Maine Community Foundation in 1996, offers scholarships to students who have spent significant time on Maine's offshore islands and are pursuing higher education. This fund supports residents from both offshore and bridged islands, encouraging them to further their education at accredited institutions. Selection is based on financial need and commitment to community service, ensuring support for deserving students in Maine.

Maine nonprofits, government entities, and federally recognized Tribes working on rural self-help housing can access funding through USDA Rural Development to support mutual self-help home construction projects. Grants cover technical and supervisory assistance, support for other self-help providers, and recruitment and loan application help for very-low- and low-income families in eligible rural areas.

Focused on rural business development, USDA: Rural Development invites Maine public entities, nonprofits, tribes, and educational institutions to apply for US $10,000 - US $500,000 to assist small rural businesses. Funding can support technical assistance, training, facilities, revolving loan funds, and other community and technology-based economic development that may benefit teacher-focused workforce or job-training initiatives.

The Patriot Education Scholarship Fund, established by the Maine Community Foundation, supports Maine high school graduates pursuing a business degree in Maine. Launched in 2007, this scholarship aims to assist students enrolled part-time or full-time in accredited institutions. With a preference for candidates interested in the insurance profession, it embodies the spirit of community support and investment in education, providing vital financial assistance to help students achieve their academic goals.

The Keystone Grant Program, funded by the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation, aims to empower grassroots and community-led initiatives focused on environmental and racial justice in Maine. With available funding of up to $1.5 million, the program supports organizations demonstrating a commitment to advocacy and civic engagement. Applicants must be eligible to receive tax-deductible donations and can include diverse groups, particularly those led by marginalized communities, to foster a sustainable and equitable future.

The Food Systems Grant Program, funded by the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation, aims to support initiatives in Maine that promote food justice, sovereignty, and nutrition equity. With available funding of $1,870,000, the program prioritizes grassroots efforts led by marginalized communities. Grants range from $10,000 to $200,000, depending on the scope and collaboration of the projects. The foundation encourages applications from organizations that address systemic inequities within the food system.

The George I. Alden Trust offers a Higher Education Grant aimed at supporting independent colleges and universities in New England, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The Trust prioritizes capital needs to enhance the educational experience, approving grants up to $100,000 for first-time applicants. Eligible institutions must have a minimum of 1,000 full-time undergraduate students and demonstrate a commitment to educational excellence and effective administration.

The Spurling Scholarship, established in 1984, supports Maine's nontraditional students seeking higher education. It aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by adult learners, particularly those from unbridged islands like Cranberry Isles and Mount Desert Island. Eligible applicants must demonstrate financial need and meet specific criteria, such as being over 25 or working full-time while studying.
