Washington high school seniors pursuing journalism or music-related college majors can access funding through the Doell Family Scholarship, which supports academic study in these fields. Established by Rhode Island PBS in 2017, the Ocean State Media Scholarship offers awards to residents of the station’s demographic market area who demonstrate promise of a successful career in the fields of journalism and/or media. Awards of up to $15,000 will be awarded annually and are renewable for an additional three years.

Columbus Matrix Foundation Scholarship

Since the early days of print journalism, The Association for Women in Communications has evolved to become the overarching professional organization to unite communicators across a vast spectrum of disciplines-from print and broadcast journalism, to graphic design, photography, public relations, advertising, marketing, new media, and much more.

Award Amount:

Alpha Chapter Controlling Corp. of the Delta Theta Sigma Fraternity Scholarship Fund

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship awards to deserving high school students who plan to attend an accredited college or university and undertake studies in marketing, communications, journalism, or advertising.

Kiwanis Club of Marietta members participate in service projects, hold fundraisers, and change children’s lives in our community. In addition, club members contribute to Kiwanis International initiatives helping clubs around the world assist children with education, basic needs, and medical care.

Bill “Scoop” Kinney Journalism Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2006 by the Marietta Kiwanis Foundation in honor of Mr. Bill Kinney, the Senior Associate Editor of the Marietta Daily Journal. 

Selection emphasis will be placed on academic performance with priority given to current or former Cobb or Marietta.

The Congressman Mark Foley Scholarship for Journalism Education Fund

Must be enrolled in a program with a major in Journalism.

Stark Community Foundation is one of the area’s major sources of college scholarship support— thanks to the generosity of caring individuals, families and businesses that have created scholarship funds.

The Foundation currently manages more than 100 scholarship funds that support hundreds of deserving students each year from Stark and Carroll counties. In 2025, more than $1,000,000 was awarded to local students to help them achieve their educational dreams.

The Velma Shotwell Griffin Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Velma Shotwell Griffin Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to assist graduates of Conotton Valley or Carrollton High Schools planning to enroll, or currently enrolled, at an accredited college or university to pursue further education in the following fields: History, Writing (not limited to, English, Journalism, Language Arts, Communications and programs in Mass Media), Graphic Arts, Music (which shall include but not limited to, vocal music, instrumental music, music history, music education, and music performance) and any other program or field of study approved by the Selection Committee.

Eligible American Indian and Alaska Native graduate students in journalism, literature, communication, or related fields can receive need-based tuition support for full-time study at accredited U.S. institutions, including those in Washington. Focused on higher education, Native Forward Scholars Fund invites applicants who can document Tribal affiliation through a Tribal Eligibility Certificate or verified descendant status.

Washington journalism-focused 501(c)(3) organizations headquartered in North America, including Adventist publications, educational institutions, and independent media covering Seventh-day Adventist issues, can access funding through Versacare. The Journalism for Adventist Solutions program awards US $5,000 - US $15,000 for investigative projects, storytelling, training, technology, travel, and other initiatives that strengthen ethical Adventist communication.

Journalism organizations and freelance reporters producing television, audio, or streaming stories on U.S. health care affordability can receive US $20,000 for impactful work through the National Institute for Health Care Management. Grants from the National Institute for Health Care Management help Washington journalism projects that inform health plans, policymakers, and consumers about costs, access, and quality of care.

Journalism outlets and nonprofit news organizations covering local U.S. health care affordability issues may be eligible for this award, including those serving Washington communities. The National Institute for Health Care Management honors high-quality local reporting with a US $15,000 prize for work published in 2025 that informs health plans, policymakers, and health care stakeholders.

Journalists and news outlets producing investigative or general reporting on U.S. health care affordability and access may be eligible for this US $20,000 prize, open to national newspapers, magazines, websites, and nonprofit news organizations. The National Institute for Health Care Management honors work that offers original insights for health plans, policymakers, and related stakeholders, including those serving Washington audiences.

Journalism outlets serving specialty audiences in Washington and across the U.S. can receive US $15,000 for outstanding reporting on health care affordability and access. The National Institute for Health Care Management honors work published in 2025 that offers original insights for health plans, policymakers, health care delivery, and related stakeholders through its Trade Journalism Award.

Journalists covering forestry and natural resources in Washington and nationwide can receive more than US $500 through the Outstanding Forestry Journalism Award for impactful reporting. Society of American Foresters provides recognition, a cash honorarium, convention registration, and travel support for exceptional print, television, or radio coverage that advances public understanding of forestry issues.

Washington students with a demonstrated interest in journalism who can provide samples of their journalistic work may be eligible for the Gene Robb Journalism Scholarship. This award from the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region supports aspiring journalists pursuing higher education and can be accessed through the foundation’s universal scholarship application.

High school seniors from the Greater Capital Region with a demonstrated interest in journalism and financial need can apply for the Michael Hurewitz Scholarship, part of a universal application covering 30+ awards. This opportunity from the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region may benefit aspiring journalists, including those in Washington exploring journalism-focused education support.

Journalism organizations and media outlets in Washington producing investigative reporting or commentary in service of the common good can apply for the Sidney Awards, which provide US $1,000 honoraria. Focused on journalism, the Sidney Hillman Foundation recognizes outstanding work each month across all mediums that fosters social justice.

Journalists and reporting teams in the U.S. can receive US $5,000 - US $25,000 in project funding for in-depth tech and society reporting, including investigative journalism and AI coverage. Washington journalism professionals may be eligible for Omidyar Network’s Tech Journalism Fund to support travel, research, data access, fact-checking, multimedia, and reporting time.

Organizations and leaders serving K-12 students or educators in Washington can apply for up to US $1,500 to run global health education projects using journalism as a core resource. Pulitzer Center supports initiatives that engage at least 500 learners, deepen understanding of global health, and explore the role of news media in public health.

Maine high school graduates and home-schooled students pursuing journalism or related media fields can receive renewable scholarships from Maine Community Foundation for college or graduate study. This U.S. program supports future journalists’ tuition and expenses, with awards ranging from US $1,000 - US $60,000, and may benefit those interested in journalism careers beyond Washington.

High school and postsecondary students from Chelan or Douglas County in Washington pursuing creative writing, including journalism, can receive scholarship support for their education. Grants from Community Foundation of North Central Washington require at least a 3.0 GPA, a description of the applicant’s writing focus, and an original short writing sample.

Washington journalism and communications students can access funding through the Express-News Charitable Foundation Scholarship Fund for tuition, fees, books, supplies, and other educational expenses. Administered by the San Antonio Area Foundation, this renewable scholarship supports full-time associate, bachelor’s, or graduate students at accredited U.S. colleges and universities who meet the South Texas residency and high school graduation requirements.

Muslim undergraduate and graduate students in journalism and related media fields can receive US $3,000 - US $5,000 in scholarship support to study at accredited U.S. universities. Islamic Scholarship Fund provides Washington journalism students with funding, mentorship, and career development to advance American Muslim representation in media and improve public narratives.

Journalism students seeking academic scholarship support in Washington can apply for funding that helps juniors, seniors, graduate, or PhD candidates committed to a journalism career. Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee supports higher education in journalism, requiring a 3.0 GPA, financial-need qualification, an essay on journalism’s role today, work samples, and service activities; recipients may reapply once.

Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award

Matthew Power was an award-winning journalist who reported empathetically on the human condition. He died in March 2014, while on assignment in Uganda.

About the Award

The Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award is a grant of $15,000 to support the work of a promising early-career nonfiction journalist on a story that uncovers truths about the human condition.

Offered for the first time in 2015, the Award has been endowed by individuals and organizations touched by the life and work of Matthew Power, a wide-roving and award-winning journalist who sought to live and share the experience of the individuals and places on which he was reporting. Power, a longtime friend of the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, died in March 2014, while on assignment in Uganda.

The award proceeds from the recognition that many important stories need to be reported from afar, and that publications do not always have the resources to send a journalist where the story is. The money need not be used exclusively for travel, but we expect that most successful applications will include such expenses. A panel of NYU journalism professors, outside writers, and editors will review the proposals. Finalists will be asked to take part in an interview online.

The judges will be interested in perpetuating Power’s legacy, as his former editor Roger Hodge put it, of “strong, character-driven narratives with detailed scenes and lyrical description.” Power was always open to the absurdity that often attends politics and international affairs; he was always searching, as he put it, for “the human truth beneath the sorry facts.” Power’s ultimate ambition, he added, was literary beauty.

That said, judges will be looking for a journalist as singular in his or her own approach as Power was in his. In addition to longform print projects, we will consider audio projects involving substantial reporting and running over 20 minutes in length. The award will not fund proposals to report on armed conflicts where journalists are already imperiled, nor projects that are mainly investigatory. The winner will normally receive visiting scholar privileges at NYU, including library access.

Grants for Research About Urban Communication Issues

Since our launch in 2005, the Urban Communication Foundation has provided awards and grants to dozens of distinguished scholars, researchers, and journalists to recognize and support provocative work that contributes in significant ways to the discourse around urban communication issues.

While most of our recipients hail from academia and journalism, we also encourage submissions from other practitioners whose work will lend new insights into the discipline, raise broader awareness of related socio-political, economic, and cultural concerns, or influence public policy.

Gene Burd Grant for Research in Urban Journalism Studies

The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication has partnered with the Urban Communication Foundation to create the Gene Burd Grant for Research in Urban Journalism Studies. The purpose of this annual grant is to stimulate research that explains, enlightens, inspires, and improves the practice and study of journalism and communication in order to advance our understanding of journalism in urban environments.
