Friends of NRA is the National Rifle Association’s premier fundraising program, supporting the future of shooting sports. Since day one, Friends of NRA has been a 100% grassroots effort fueled by a united front to secure the Second Amendment and raise money for the shooting sports.

Committee volunteers are appointed to State Fund Committees to make recommendations for local grant funding in areas such as youth education, women-focused clinics, law enforcement training, hunter safety, range improvement, firearms and marksmanship training and safety. Recognizing the impact American youth has on the future of the shooting sports, State Fund Committees frequently recommend grants for youth programs, allocating the most significant portion of monies to this vital area.

Grant awards fund activities and support programs in the United States to promote firearms and hunting safety, to enhance marksmanship skills of those in the shooting sports, and to educate the public about firearms in their historic, technological and artistic context.

Friends of NRA State Fund Grant Program - South Dakota

The Friends of NRA State Fund Grant Program provides supplies, equipment, and financial support to a variety of qualified groups and programs at the local level; geared towards youth, women, law enforcement, veterans, the disabled, and the general public, including:

• General shooting programs
• Competitive shooting
• Education, training and safety
• Hunting and conservation
• Community outreach
• Historical education

Grant funding must be used to further a charitable purpose as defined by the Internal Revenue Code under section 501(c)(3) and accompanying rules, regulations, and other IRS law and materials.

U.S. healthcare organizations, research institutions, and community-based health centers working on gun violence or firearm suicide prevention can apply for Kaiser Permanente Advisory Services’ Center for Gun Violence Research and Education grants, with awards up to US $300,000. Projects should advance evidence-based healthcare interventions that reduce community gun violence, firearm suicide, and improve care for survivors, including in South Dakota.

Nonprofit public charities working on national gun violence prevention, voting rights, or democracy initiatives can apply for the Lisa & Douglas Goldman Fund’s Democracy & Civil Liberties support; awards fund multi-state or U.S.-wide projects. Organizations in South Dakota may be eligible if their work operates nationally or across multiple states and meets invitation-only criteria.

Focused on gun violence prevention, Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund invites South Dakota students personally impacted by gun violence to join its Survivor Fellowship Program. Eligible applicants are at least 18, enrolled in high school, college, or graduate school, and receive a year of advocacy and leadership training to share their stories and promote safer communities.

Women recognized nationally for advancing shooting sports, firearms education, or Second Amendment advocacy in the U.S. may be eligible for the Sybil Ludington Women’s Freedom Award, honoring individual leadership and public service. The NRA Foundation highlights modern heroines whose work may intersect with gun safety, community education, or gun violence prevention efforts in South Dakota and beyond.

Organizations and research institutions building capacity to study healthcare approaches to firearm violence and suicide in the U.S., including South Dakota, may be eligible for up to US $100,000 from Kaiser Permanente. Focused on research and healthcare-based gun violence prevention, this opportunity supports developing infrastructure, partnerships, and systems to conduct rigorous firearm-related harm research.

Healthcare institutions and research organizations conducting gun violence prevention studies in South Dakota and nationwide can access funding to pilot or expand evidence-informed clinical care models. Grants from Kaiser Permanente help advance healthcare-based interventions that prevent, treat, and heal firearm-related harms, including firearm suicide, with awards up to US $250,000 over two years.

With a mission to prevent firearm-related injuries and deaths, federal research grants provide South Dakota gun violence prevention researchers and institutions with up to US $650,000 to rigorously evaluate innovative strategies. Eligible projects use existing or newly collected data to study prevention of shootings, suicides, assaults, unintentional injuries, firearm crime, and defensive gun use.

The Preventing Violence Affecting Young Lives (PREVAYL 2.0) initiative aims to provide multiyear funding for state and local health departments to implement violence prevention strategies for adolescents and young adults. Key focuses include enhancing data-driven decision-making, building capacity for evidence-based strategies, integrating youth mental health support, fostering multisector collaborations, and prioritizing the prevention of various forms of violence, ensuring comprehensive support for youth development.

501(c)(3) public charities working on Jewish community initiatives, including gun violence prevention efforts, can apply for the Lisa & Douglas Goldman Fund’s Jewish Community support, which includes national projects. Funding supports combating antisemitism, advocacy and education about Jews and Israel, civic engagement, and innovative, experiential Jewish programs; requests begin with a letter of inquiry.
