South Dakota graduating high school seniors pursuing journalism-related degrees at in-state colleges can receive scholarship support for tuition and educational costs. With a mission to support higher education, South Dakota Community Foundation provides South Dakota journalism students with up to US $5,000 through the David Kranz - Argus Leader Media Journalism Scholarship.

Ocean State Media Scholarship

The scholarship offers awards to residents of Ocean State Media’s demographic market area who demonstrate promise of a successful career in the fields of journalism and/or media.

Scholarship Award Details

Established by Rhode Island PBS in 2017, the Ocean State Media Scholarship offers awards to residents of the station’s demographic market area who demonstrate promise of a successful career in the fields of journalism and/or media. Awards of up to $15,000 will be awarded annually and are renewable for an additional three years.

Columbus Matrix Foundation Scholarship

Since the early days of print journalism, The Association for Women in Communications has evolved to become the overarching professional organization to unite communicators across a vast spectrum of disciplines-from print and broadcast journalism, to graphic design, photography, public relations, advertising, marketing, new media, and much more.

Award Amount:

• Up to four scholarships of $10,000 payable over four years at $2,500 per academic year.

Alpha Chapter Controlling Corp. of the Delta Theta Sigma Fraternity Scholarship Fund

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship awards to deserving high school students who plan to attend an accredited college or university and undertake studies in marketing, communications, journalism, or advertising.

Kiwanis Club of Marietta members participate in service projects, hold fundraisers, and change children’s lives in our community. In addition, club members contribute to Kiwanis International initiatives helping clubs around the world assist children with education, basic needs, and medical care.

These scholarships are made possible through our club's Flag Project, which places over 1,300 American flags in front of homes and businesses five times each year.

Bill “Scoop” Kinney Journalism Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2006 by the Marietta Kiwanis Foundation in honor of Mr. Bill Kinney, the Senior Associate Editor of the Marietta Daily Journal. 

Selection emphasis will be placed on academic performance with priority given to current or former Cobb or Marietta.

Applicants must be enrolled in a college program with a journalism major and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA to be considered for this competitive support.

Journalism and related arts students from Conotton Valley or Carrollton High Schools can receive renewable scholarships of more than US $500 to attend accredited colleges or universities. Stark Community Foundation’s Velma Shotwell Griffin Memorial Scholarship Fund supports studies in writing, journalism, media, music, history, graphic arts, and other approved fields, which may benefit future journalism professionals in South Dakota and beyond.

American Indian and Alaska Native graduate students in journalism, communication, literature, or related fields studying full-time in the U.S. may receive need-based support for tuition and academic costs. Grants from Native Forward Scholars Fund help students, including eligible descendants, who can document Tribal affiliation and whose programs may include journalism work connected to South Dakota.

U.S.-based 501(c)(3) Adventist publications, universities, academies, and independent media covering Seventh-day Adventist issues can receive US $5,000 - US $15,000 for journalism projects, including investigative reporting and ethical storytelling. Versacare’s Journalism for Adventist Solutions program can benefit journalism organizations in South Dakota that meet these Adventist-focused eligibility criteria.

Television, radio, streaming, and podcast journalism outlets and freelance reporters covering U.S. health care can receive a US $20,000 prize for outstanding work on affordability, access, and quality. With a mission to improve health care, the National Institute for Health Care Management honors impactful reporting that South Dakota journalists and newsrooms may submit if nationally or broadly distributed.

Local journalism outlets covering health care affordability and access in the U.S., including those in South Dakota, can receive a US $15,000 prize for outstanding local reporting. The National Institute for Health Care Management honors work from newspapers, magazines, their websites, and nonprofit news organizations that offers new insights for health plans, policymakers, and health care stakeholders.

Journalism outlets producing investigative or general reporting on U.S. health care affordability can apply for the NIHCM Foundation Investigative and General Reporting Award, a US $20,000 prize. Grants from the National Institute for Health Care Management help South Dakota and national news organizations recognize high-impact work on costs, access, and quality in health care.

Journalists and specialty publications in South Dakota covering U.S. health care affordability and access can apply for the NIHCM Foundation Trade Journalism Award, which provides US $15,000 for outstanding reporting. Eligible entries are 2025 articles or series for specialty audiences that offer new insights for health plans, policymakers, and related stakeholders.

Journalists and media professionals in South Dakota covering forestry and natural resources can receive recognition and support through the Outstanding Forestry Journalism Award, which includes more than US $500 and convention benefits. Society of American Foresters accepts one nomination per SAF state, multistate, or intrastate society each year for impactful print, TV, or radio work.

Students interested in journalism in South Dakota and beyond can receive scholarship support for higher education and must provide samples of journalistic work. The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region’s Gene Robb Journalism Scholarship honors a former Times Union publisher and is accessed through a universal application covering more than 30 scholarships.

High school seniors interested in journalism and needing financial aid can receive scholarship support for college through this program, open to students from the Greater Capital Region. With a mission to empower meaningful giving, The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region provides academic scholarships that may benefit aspiring journalism students connected to South Dakota programs or institutions.

Journalists producing investigative or social-justice reporting in South Dakota and nationwide can receive US $1,000 Sidney Awards for outstanding work. Focused on journalism in service of the common good, the Sidney Hillman Foundation honors a single piece each month across any medium, with self- or third-party nominations accepted.

South Dakota journalists working on in-depth technology and society stories can access funding through Omidyar Network Fund for project-based reporting costs. U.S.-based freelancers, staff reporters, editors, and teams may receive US $5,000 - US $25,000 for travel, research, fact-checking, data access, multimedia, and reporting time, with priority for AI and tech-focused investigations.

South Dakota K-12 institutions and organizations serving students or educators can access funding through the Pulitzer Center’s K-12 Education Grant Program: Global Health to implement journalism-based global health projects. Eligible libraries, museums, community centers, schools, bookstores, and afterschool organizations may receive up to US $1,500 for initiatives reaching at least 500 learners in the U.S. and territories.

South Dakota journalism students can access funding through Maine Community Foundation’s Guy P. Gannett Journalism Scholarship, which offers US $1,000 - US $60,000 for post-secondary or graduate study in journalism or related media fields. Applicants must be graduates of Maine high schools or home-schooled in a Maine community during their final secondary year.

High school and postsecondary students from Chelan or Douglas County pursuing creative writing or journalism can receive scholarship support for their education. Grants from Community Foundation of North Central Washington help fund higher education for writers with at least a 3.0 GPA. South Dakota journalism students may find this listing useful for comparison, though they are not eligible.

Students pursuing journalism or communications degrees in the U.S. can receive renewable scholarship support for tuition and educational expenses. With a mission to build community, San Antonio Area Foundation provides South Dakota and other South Texas–connected journalism students with funding when they are full-time enrollees and residents or graduates of specified South Texas counties.

Muslim undergraduate or graduate students in journalism, media studies, or related writing fields in the U.S., including South Dakota, can receive US $3,000 - US $5,000 for their studies and career development. Islamic Scholarship Fund provides media scholarships that include funding, mentorship, and professional opportunities to strengthen American Muslim representation in news and storytelling.

Journalism students seeking scholarship support for higher education may be eligible for this fund, which supports juniors, seniors, graduate, or PhD candidates committed to journalism careers. Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee backs students who meet GPA and financial-need criteria, submit an essay on journalism’s role today, and provide samples of their work; recipients may reapply for one additional year.

The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism

Prize Summary

The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism was established by the AACR in 2015 to raise awareness of the critical role that the media play in educating the public about cancer and cancer research.

Funded by a major bequest to the AACR from cancer research pioneer Dr. June L. Biedler, a scientist, mentor, and former member of the AACR Board of Directors, this prize showcases outstanding examples of cancer journalism and recognizes individual professional journalists who have produced accurate, informative, and compelling stories that enhance the public’s understanding of cancer, cancer research, cancer advocacy, or cancer policy.

The prize provides an unrestricted cash award of $5,000 and a commemorative award.

Ambitious freelancers who want to tackle an in-depth reporting project often find that the fee from a potential publisher doesn’t come close to covering their costs and time. Grants and fellowships can fill that gap, but freelancers have to know about them in order to apply. In this section, the Freelance Center is compiling a list of non-AHCJ grants, fellowships and awards (for when the hard work is done).

Sunshine Award

Presented by AHCJ’s Right-to-Know Committee

AHCJ’s Right-to-Know Committee established the Sunshine Award at Health Journalism 2026 as a way to elevate the work of journalists like STAT’s Bob Herman who fight for government transparency. We plan to continue this tradition annually from now on. Award winners receive free registration and a one-night hotel stay for our annual conference, a free year of AHCJ membership, a trophy and a certificate.

AHCJ U.S. Health System Reporting Fellowship

This opportunity is for U.S.-based journalists.

Issues with the U.S. health care system are often obvious — from large swaths of uninsured residents and junk insurance plans, to high maternal mortality rates and preventable medical errors. But what is at the root of issues like these? What could an equitable health care system look like? 

Through the U.S. Health System Reporting Fellowship, supported by The Commonwealth Fund, you can pursue a significant reporting project related to the U.S. health care system at the local, regional and/or national level.

This fellowship allows mid-career journalists to maintain their regular employment while working on a major project over a 12-month calendar year. You’ll pursue the projects with the support of your newsrooms or arranged outlets, which commit to publish or air the work.

We believe that issues of health equity impact every facet of the health care system, which is why we’re specifically interested in projects focused on health equity. This might include racial disparities within a community, gaps in public health inclusion, unstable housing, insurance access, food insecurity, violence as a health issue, how health care institutions or systems are applying a racial equity lens to their policies and practices or otherwise addressing inequities or disparities, or other examinations of systemic problems that have become so apparent over the last few years.

Guidance is provided by AHCJ mentors through customized seminars on health care systems, conference calls and email consultations. The fellowship covers the cost of attending the seminars and the annual AHCJ conference, as well as a $2,500 project allowance to defray the cost of field reporting, health data analysis and other project-related research. In addition, you will receive a $5,000 fellowship award upon the successful completion of the project.
