Harriet H. Werley New Investigator Award

The purpose of the Harriet H. Werley New Investigator Award is to recognize the scientific contribution of a new investigator who has conducted nursing research that has the potential to enhance the science and practice of nursing.

The Larson Family Foundation, established in 1990 by Dale Larson, aims to enhance the quality of life for South Dakotans through grants to tax-exempt organizations. With a maximum grant of $100,000, the foundation supports diverse programs addressing basic human needs, including food, clothing, and education. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations in South Dakota. However, the foundation does not fund administrative expenses or individual scholarships, ensuring that contributions directly benefit community services.

Distinguished Contribution Award

The purpose of the Distinguished Contribution Award is to recognize the scientific contribution of a member who has conducted or promoted research, which has enhanced the science and practice of nursing in the MNRS region.

The Tree Campus Higher Education Program by the Arbor Day Foundation promotes the importance of trees and green spaces on college campuses. By meeting five key standards, colleges can earn recognition for their commitment to environmental stewardship. This initiative enhances campus livability, supports mental health, and encourages student involvement in service-learning projects. Participating institutions gain pride and visibility within their communities, contributing to a sustainable future for both students and the planet.

Ralph and Doris Wallin Scholarship

Awarded to residents of Minnehaha or Lincoln counties in South Dakota.Multiple scholarships are awarded; This award is renewable for one additional year if requirements are met and if funds are available

The Creative West Artist Fund supports artists and cultural practitioners across 16 states, providing essential funding and resources to enhance their emotional and financial well-being. Rooted in values of Democracy, Wellness, and Belonging, this initiative offers no-strings-attached funding alongside coaching and community care. Kimberly Rose Means — Native American Council of Tribes Scholarship

Awarded to a graduating senior who is an enrolled member of a South Dakota Native American tribe or a South Dakota tribal member who is returning to school. 

The Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship, awarded by Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, supports first and second-year medical students conducting research over 2 to 12 months. With a total funding of $7,000, students can receive reimbursement for travel expenses up to $1,000 for presenting their findings at national conferences. Eligibility requires enrollment in schools with active AΩA chapters, while those taking a year off for research or holding a PhD are ineligible.

The PRISM Fund Grant, offered by PFund Foundation, aims to enhance equity within LGBTQ+ communities in the upper Midwest. It focuses on supporting rural LGBTQ+ organizations through grants, training, and collaboration. The program prioritizes communities disproportionately affected by discrimination, such as queer people of color, gender-expansive individuals, and LGBTQ+ residents of North and South Dakota. By addressing unique regional challenges, the PRISM Fund fosters resilience and connectivity among these underserved populations.

Project Lead The Way is offering a rolling grant opportunity for schools across the US to implement the PLTW Gateway program for the first time. With total funding of $9,100, the grant covers participation fees and training registration costs. Schools, including public, private, and charter, are encouraged to apply, particularly those serving low-income and minority majority populations. This initiative aims to enhance educational pathways in STEM for diverse student groups.

The Disaster Resilience Program, supported by Equal Justice Works, aims to provide free civil legal aid to communities affected by disasters in the Midwest. With funding for attorney and summer law student fellows, the program addresses the unique legal needs of low-income families, helping them recover from the impacts of disasters. This initiative not only stabilizes lives but also promotes resilience in communities by ensuring access to essential legal services.

Organizations and agencies working on land and habitat conservation in South Dakota can access funding through the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Grant Program. Grants of US $5,000 - US $50,000 support projects focused on habitat stewardship, land conservation and access, wildlife management, and hunting heritage, which may include educator or school-based conservation initiatives.

The South Dakota Space Grant Consortium offers Research Experience for Teachers fellowships aimed at enhancing STEM education. This program provides secondary teachers with hands-on research opportunities at local universities or laboratories, enabling them to enrich their teaching practices. With a focus on inclusion, especially for under-represented groups, the initiative seeks to foster skills that will contribute to the future workforce in science and engineering fields. Each fellowship is valued at $8000, supporting teachers' professional growth.

The South Dakota Space Grant Consortium Fellowship/Scholarship Program offers educational stipends to support students pursuing degrees in STEM fields. With awards of $1,000 for freshmen and up to $3,000 for sophomores and above, the program aims to encourage underrepresented groups, including women and Native Americans, to engage in research and education. This initiative is vital for fostering diversity in the STEM workforce and ensuring that students gain hands-on research experience at various NASA facilities.

Rape Prevention Education Grant

Sexual violence is any sexual activity where consent is not freely given. Sexual violence affects millions of people each year in the United States and can lead to serious health consequences, including mental health conditions, injury, and chronic physical health problems.

The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS, 2016–2017) reports:

• More than 1 in 2 women (over 54%) and nearly 1 in 3 men (about 31%) have experienced contact sexual violence—including rape, being made to penetrate someone, sexual coercion, or unwanted sexual contact—at some point in their lives.
• Nearly 1 in 4 women (about 27%) have experienced completed or attempted rape in their lifetimes.
• About 1 in 26 men (3.8%) have experienced completed or attempted rape, and more than 1 in 10 men (10.7%) have been made to penetrate someone during their lifetime.

The South Dakota Rape Prevention Education (RPE) program is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This funding is authorized through the Violence Against Women Act.

The goal of the RPE program is to strengthen sexual violence prevention efforts by focusing on primary prevention: preventing sexual violence before it occurs. It operates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and six U.S. territories. The CDC provides tools, training, and technical assistance to the RPE program to prevent sexual violence, reduce risk factors, enhance protective factors, promote best practices, analyze data and evaluate prevention efforts.

With the RPE program, South Dakota hopes to lower sexual violence rates against everyone, but especially the target audiences of children, teens, young adults, and Native Americans.

The L.B. Research and Education Foundation Grant Program supports U.S.-based nonprofits focusing on innovative education and health solutions for underserved populations. Eligible organizations can apply by submitting a 400-word concept paper, and selected applicants may receive funding ranging from $10,000 to $75,000. The Foundation prioritizes projects that foster critical thinking and creativity, address health disparities, and encourage collaboration. There are no application deadlines, promoting year-round engagement.

Local governments and 501(c)(3) nonprofits in South Dakota can receive up to US $5,000 to support urban and community forestry projects, including tree planting, maintenance, education, and demonstration efforts. South Dakota Department of Agriculture & Natural Resources provides these matching grants, which may benefit schools and educators involved in community-based environmental or forestry education.

The South Dakota Dental Association Grants aim to enhance oral health in South Dakota through financial support for various initiatives. These include scholarships for dental students, educational programs for professionals and the public, and projects targeting underserved communities. The grants are awarded annually and prioritize activities that align with the Foundation's mission to improve dental health. However, funding is not available for political activities, past purchases, or organizational budget shortfalls.
