Giving school theatre programs a boost

The Thespian Growth & Excellence Fund is committed to supporting the ongoing development of theatre programs and the pursuit of excellence for educators, students, schools, and communities by offering a number of grants that assist in EdTA membership, teacher support, and programmatic resources for theatre in schools.

By the end of 2024, the Thespian Growth and Excellence Fund has awarded 349 grants to 276 schools, totaling $286,167 in assistance provided to school theatre programs, many at schools with Title 1 designations.

Equipment Upgrade (up to $5,000)

Can be awarded to help school theatre programs with large technical purchases that upgrade the resources available for theatrical use, such as lighting and sound equipment.

SHIFT 3.2: Rural Health Provider NetworksThis opportunity supports the establishment and/or expansion of integrated rural health provider networks, including but not limited to: rural health clinics, pediatric trauma, or maternal health networks. Awardees will develop a comprehensive resource directory of physical and behavioral healthcare services across rural Utah to detail the capacity, access, and availability of local services to efficiently support both patients and providers. These networks will pool resources, expand local services, reduce duplication of efforts, and lower administrative costs across rural Utah.

LIFT 5.1 Scalable Telehealth ProjectsThe LIFT Initiative aims to develop, support, enhance, and improve sustainable physical and behavioral healthcare access and outcomes in Utah's rural communities through scalable, data-informed telehealth strategies, reinforced by training and technical assistance. Projects funded through this RFA must contribute to a robust rural telehealth system consistent with the Utah RHTP Plan.This RFA invites eligible rural providers and partners to apply for funding to implement telehealth and digital care projects that advance the LIFT Initiative outcomes, including, but not limited to:

• Expanded telehealth access and utilization
• Increased telehealth-enabled sites
• Increased availability of telehealth‐enabled specialties
• Reduced travel time and wait times for rural patients

Dick & Judy Hoyt Inclusion Grant

The Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism is excited to collaborate with the Hoyt Foundation for the Dick and Judy Hoyt Grant for Inclusion. Our joint effort is driven by a shared vision of fostering a society where individuals with autism and other disabilities are embraced and valued within their communities. In tribute to the pioneering spirit of Dick and Judy Hoyt, we will be distributing $50,000 through this community grant to support people with autism and other disabilities. Successful ways grant funds can be used: 

• Side-by-side participation with non-disabled peers in a swim program, the grant provides a private lifeguard to allow individualized support to ensure an inclusive experience.
• Grant provides the purchase of a racing chair to allow an individual with a disability to run in races with non-disabled peers.
• Competitive horseback riding supported by the grant to purchase specialized equipment to allow a rider to compete against non-disabled peers.
• Grant provides the purchase of an adaptive ski prosthetic to allow an individual to participate side by side with non-disabled peers on their high school ski teams.
• Participation in dance training and competitions to allow a student with a disability to compete in a dance competition with non-disabled peers, grant lessons, and staff to assist in dance training.
• Grant provides a mobile stand to allow a student with a disability to participate side by side with non-disabled peers in the college marching band.

This opportunity supports Utah’s rural health facilities in recruiting and retaining high-need clinical professionals by offering structured incentives, developing short-term rotation and short-term coverage pools, and enabling upskilling and professional development.

The awardee(s) will partner with Rural Hospitals, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), Rural Clinics, other rural facilities (e.g., behavioral health, dental, long-term care, etc.), and state/local agencies (e.g., local mental health authorities, etc.) to distribute and deploy RHTP funds to be used for recruiting and retaining clinical staff in rural Utah.

The semantic data model will enable real-time data exchange and provide a critical foundation for advanced applications like analytics, clinical decision support, and AI innovation for Utah’s rural hospitals.

Multi-initiative: Sustainable Provider Revenue, Infrastructure, and Network Technology (SPRINT) Consortium

This opportunity supports the selection of an administrative partner to serve as the lead fiscal entity representing a rural healthcare consortium. The awardee will be responsible for releasing and managing competitive funding opportunities for Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP) projects designed to eliminate infrastructure gaps across Utah's rural and frontier medical systems.

The awardee will propose a unified strategy addressing four core pillars:

• Capital Infrastructure (SHIFT 3.1) via minor renovations and equipment purchases;
• Financial Sustainability (FAST 4.2, 4.3) through revenue cycle optimization and alternative payment models;
• Technology and Artificial Intelligence (SUPPORT 6.1–6.5) by upgrading EHRs, deploying mandatory multi-factor authentication and endpoint detection software, and implementing clinical and consumer-facing AI solutions; and
• Interoperability (LINCS 7.1, 7.2) to enhance secure data exchange and patient portal access.

SHIFT 3.4 New Models of Care

The purpose of this Request for Grant Applications (RFGA) is to transform rural healthcare access and care coordination to drive measurable improvements in health outcomes. In alignment with Utah’s RHTP SHIFT Initiative 3.4, funded models must move beyond standard service delivery to achieve established SHIFT benchmarks.

Funded projects will support innovative solutions in key service areas including mobile care, transportation, prevention, chronic disease management, behavioral health, cancer care, and maternal and child health. To enhance care coordination, models may integrate Community Health Workers (CHWs), Peer Support Specialists, or similar roles to support rural health care teams and patients effectively.

RISE 2.2: Rural Clinical Preceptor Stipend Program

This program recognizes current uncompensated preceptors and incentivizes new providers to train MD, DO, APRN, and PA students, as well as medical residents, in rural Utah. To qualify for the stipend, preceptors must complete a minimum of 160 hours within the eligible time period, including direct instruction, training, and supervision, which may be aggregated across multiple students.

Applications will be accepted up to twice annually.

This opportunity comprises the initial phase of Utah’s rural Graduate Medical Education (GME) expansion. The awardee will develop a comprehensive 10-year strategic plan to expand GME opportunities within rural Utah facilities, in partnership with local medical schools, health care systems, and facilities. Utilizing a collaborative stakeholder framework, the awardee will design a sustainable model for rural GME that ensures a reliable healthcare workforce pipeline.

PATH 1.5: Behavioral Health—Primary Care Integration

Funds will implement an integrated behavioral health and primary care model in rural sites using a stepped-care approach. Activities include providing intensive technical assistance to guide clinics in adopting screening, referral processes, and the principles of integrated care. Sites will be supported to implement projects focusing on measurement-based treatment, patient-centered teams, and population health management and as appropriate along the Comprehensive Health Integration (CHI)/Collaborative Care Model (CoCM) continuum.

This work ensures the lowest necessary intervention is provided first, with care "stepped up" as outcomes are tracked, specifically targeting mild to moderate conditions and supporting dual-eligible beneficiaries.

This opportunity will help prepare Utah’s rural providers to transition to value-based care models by delivering comprehensive needs assessments, training, and robust data infrastructure for quality reporting and interoperability. This program will work towards operationalizing a Clinically Integrated Network (CIN) to centralize administrative functions like billing and IT, while collaborating with insurers to pilot new payment models.

Multiplex Platforms to Assess Indicators of Micronutrient Status, Inflammation and Infectious Disease

The Challenge

Although combined immunological measurement of several micronutrient biomarkers has been demonstrated, current methods still have important limitations. These include heterogeneity in the composition of standards and controls; inconsistent batch-to-batch performance of analyte-binding molecules; variable reactivity for some analytes, especially soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR); and a functional analytical range that is too narrow to cover the physiological values of some analytes, such as CRP. It would also be valuable to add bioindicators for vitamins B1, B2, B9 and B12, which may require binding molecules that recognize metabolites or proteins associated with deficiency, a specific vitamer (plasma methyl-tetrahydrofolate without reacting with folic acid), comparable reactivity across vitamers (several folate forms in red blood cells), or a specific carrier-protein form (holo-transcobalamin rather than apo-transcobalamin or haptocorrin for vitamin B12).

The improved assays must combine high analytical specificity, sensitivity and robustness with a functional analytical range matched to the physiological values expected in the target populations (women of reproductive age, including during pregnancy and lactation, preschool-age children and older adults). Assays must remain low-cost (no more than US$20 for all analytes measured in duplicate) and require very small sample volumes, preferably less than 10 µL of plasma or serum). The tests are intended for population surveillance rather than local clinical (point-of-care) use. They should be designed to run many samples in a single batch in a small number of national or regional reference laboratories. The goal is to reduce dependence on expensive, infrequent population surveys and on export of samples to specialized laboratories in high-income settings.

This challenge is structured around two alternatives, a minimum-scope approach and an optimistic-scope approach. Targets are aligned with the candidate Target Product Profile for this platform, and applicants will be held to the relevant performance, cost and instrument targets.
