Recreational Trails Program

The Recreational Trails Program provides federal funds to rehabilitate and maintain trails that provide a backcountry experience.

A backcountry experience means that the user will experience nature instead of seeing or hearing human development and activity. While backcountry trails may be near cities or roads, or even offer views of cities and towns, the trail’s physical setting should be predominately natural.

This grant program invests in all types of trails, including those for riding off-road vehicles, bicycling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, hiking, horseback riding, motorcycling, water trails, and more.

Typical Projects

• Clearing overgrown brush and fallen trees from trails
• Repairing trail damage from floods and fires
• Replacing bridges and drainage structures

Long-term Commitment

Trails and facilities developed with these grants must be open and available for twenty-five years.

Projects that maintain trails must be open and available during the active period of the project agreement; however, those that entail capital work to build new trails or facilities or make significant, long-term renewal improvements to existing facilities must be open and available for twenty-five years.

We know that all women/girls are impacted by sexism. From WaWF’s race and gender equity focused learning of the past several years we also know that inequity is not experienced by all women in the same way. We know women of color experience the intersectional nature of race and gender in compounding ways. We know that trans women experience discrimination and harassment based on their gender identity in addition to any other identities they may hold.  

Our grants focus on women/girls most impacted by inequity. As a learning organization, this means we will continue to build on our understanding of race even as we apply a more targeted gender lens to our grantmaking. Targeted Universalism shapes our understanding of how to address the intersectional nature of inequities in our state. In simple terms, Targeted Universalism means setting universal goals that can be achieved through targeted approaches. Our universal goal is equity for all in Washington State, and we believe that goal is best achieved by supporting the women and girls most impacted by inequity

Grant Award:

• $20,000 full award, distributed at $10,000 for 2 years

• Up to three grants given per year, with merit awards also available

The WAEF Scholarships - NordicBear program supports students linked to the tree fruit industry, providing awards ranging from $1,000 to $8,000. Open to children of Northern Fruit employees, eligible applicants must have a parent with significant industry employment. Scholarships can be used for various accredited educational institutions in the U.S. Recipients may reapply for up to three additional years, promoting continued education and career development in this vital sector.

The WAEF Scholarships, funded by the Washington Apple Education Foundation, support over 300 students annually with more than $1 million in awards. This program primarily targets college juniors and seniors from Washington's tree fruit growing regions pursuing degrees in accounting. Eligible applicants include high school seniors and current college students with familial ties to the tree fruit industry, which encompasses apple, cherry, and pear orchards. Scholarships can be utilized at accredited institutions across the state.

Washington State Arts Commission

ArtsWA is the Washington State Arts Commission. We are a state agency, formed by the Washington State Legislature in 1961. Our mission is to nurture and support the role of the arts in the lives of all Washingtonians.

Tribal Cultural Grant

This non-competitive grant offers funding for Washington State Federally recognized Tribes to support Tribal communities as they expand, enhance, or create space for art and culture that is respectful and responsive to each community’s needs. As long as the proposed project is eligible, your Tribe will automatically receive funding. 

Funding: The application includes space for each Tribe to identify an additional funding request that will be considered if additional funding becomes available, or if all Tribes do not apply. Funding not requested by the closing date will be reallocated as additional funding to those that applied. 

Examples of What We Can Fund

• Artist, teaching artist, and contractor fees
• Tribal museum support including, exhibitions, collections, enhancements, planning and consultations
• Rent (equipment or space)
• Travel expenses for in-state artists or consultants
• Materials, supplies, software, and technology
• Administrative expenses, including printing costs, postage, and other administrative fees
• Fees for increasing access to programming such as closed captioning, translation services, interpreters, or consultant support on these efforts
• Support of Native/Indigenous artists for start-up funds (business license, website development, technology)
• Expenses for Tribal cultural classes

Bess Mikalson Scholarship

Students must attend state-supported (two or four-year) colleges or universities in Washington State. Awards are granted primarily on the basis of financial need.

Merit and community involvement are also considered. Previous recipients of this award are eligible to reapply.

Applicants must be from Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan, Kittitas, or Grant counties and seek further education at an accredited trade school.

The Camp Fire NCW Scholarship, funded by the Community Foundation of North Central Washington, supports high school seniors from Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan, Grant, or Adams counties who have been active with Camp Fire NCW for at least two years. This scholarship aims to assist students pursuing further education at accredited institutions or vocational programs in the U.S. It encourages ongoing involvement in community service and offers renewal opportunities for recipients who reapply.

The Washington State Legislature funded the Outdoor Learning Grants program with the goal to develop and support outdoor educational experiences for students in Washington public schools.

All children deserve access to outdoor spaces where they can learn, play, and grow, but access to outdoor educational opportunities is inequitable.

From reducing stress, to improving mental and physical health, outdoor-based learning helps youth thrive. Research shows that students who participate in outdoor educational activities are more likely to graduate, are better behaved in school, and have more relationships with peers, higher academic achievement, more critical thinking skills, and more direct experience of scientific concepts in the field. They also have better leadership and collaboration skills and a deeper engagement with learning, place, and community.

The California Casualty Music & Arts Grant supports K-12 public schools facing budget cuts that threaten their music and arts programs. The Clarence and Della Murray Scholarship, established by the Community Foundation of North Central Washington, honors the legacy of Clarence and Della Murray. This scholarship supports high school seniors from Chelan, Douglas, or Okanogan counties who exhibit financial need, strong moral character, and academic potential. Eligible students must have a GPA between 2.5 and 3.5 and are encouraged to pursue further education at accredited institutions in the U.S. This initiative continues the Murray family's commitment to education and community support.

The Dr. Steven G. Kerr Memorial Medical Scholarship, offered by the Community Foundation of North Central Washington, supports nontraditional students enrolled in the Allied Health Program at Wenatchee Valley College. This scholarship honors Dr. Kerr's legacy, who overcame financial challenges to pursue a medical career. It aims to assist older students who have returned to education after a break and are committed to a career in medicine or a related field.

We offer practical, equity-centered learning experiences and funding opportunities that connect and inspire artists, culture-bearers and communities to build a more inclusive sector, strengthen the arts field, and catalyze change.

Native Arts and Heritage Fund

The Native Arts + Heritage Fund (NAHF) is a community-rooted award program created to support Native American and Alaska Native artists, culture bearers, and cultural practitioners across the Creative West region.

Co-designed with Native-centered artists, advisors, and community leaders, NAHF centers care, cultural continuity, and self-determination. The fund honors Indigenous ways of knowing and values process over product, relationship over compliance, and well-being as a meaningful measure of impact. In addition to unrestricted funding, selected artists will participate in a three-month virtual cohort experience designed for connection, reflection, and shared learning.

NAHF is administered by Creative West, an organization that uplifts artists and culture bearers across the Creative West region by providing funding, mentorship, and culturally rooted support.

Applicants must provide a letter of support from an Alaska Native or Native American community member who can speak to their relationship to community and cultural work.

Inspired by Duane Kaasa, a dedicated builder and US Marine, this scholarship emphasizes the importance of practical skills for economic stability and personal fulfillment. Preference is given to veterans and graduates from high schools in Chelan and Douglas counties, fostering local talent in these essential fields.

The WAEF Scholarships, including the Zirkle Fruit Company Scholarship in Memory of Guadalupe Campos, support students connected to Washington's tree fruit industry. Open to high school seniors and college students, these scholarships fund education at accredited institutions in Washington. Recipients are typically linked through employment or family ties to the industry, which encompasses apple, cherry, and pear orchards. Over $1 million is awarded this year to help students achieve their academic goals.
