Scholarship eligibility requires students to attend an accredited 2 or 4 year public or private institution of higher learning. All scholarships are for full-time students, unless otherwise noted. The Mabel M. Witmer Scholarship Fund, managed by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, supports students pursuing education in trade or technical schools. Community Foundation of Henderson County

Community Foundation of Henderson County was incorporated in 1982 by a group of fourteen dedicated and compassionate local leaders with the immediate need to manage two funds - the William C. Armstrong Scholarship Fund and the Charlie Renfrow Scholarship Fund, in addition to providing a permanent vehicle for citizens to give back to their community.

Bryce A. Malsbary (BAM) Scholarship

The purpose of the Fund is to provide a scholarship for a person seeking higher education at an accredited institution, including but not limited to: vocational, technical, trade, college, or university levels of education. Assistance is for a resident of Henderson County or Polk County, North Carolina, leading to a degree. Candidate must show financial need, GPA 3.0 or higher, and have community service, work, or school activities. Student must be a legal resident of North Carolina.

The NCB - Botany Research Scholarship Program, offered by Northern California Botanists, targets undergraduate and graduate students pursuing research in botany and plant ecology. Scholarships of $1,500 support independent study, thesis, or dissertation projects within a specific geographic area of Northern California. The CTTSS Graduate Students Research Award, offered by the Society of Toxicology, recognizes outstanding research by current Ph.D. students in translational and clinical toxicology. Recipients are announced at the SOT Annual Meeting, with the first-place winner receiving a cash award and certificate. The Combined Pilot Research Grants from the Plastic Surgery Foundation and the American Society for Peripheral Nerve support innovative research in peripheral nerve surgery. Marion Community Foundation

Dr. Tarlok & Amar Purewal Scholarship

Dr. Tarlok and Amar Purewal, long-time Marion residents, strongly believe in helping young people find employment in the trades and careers that do not require a college degree, or even a high school degree. In collaboration with Jobs & Family Services, the Buckeye School, Tri-Rivers Adult Education, Marion Matters, and Marion Technical College, the Purewals created an endowment fund which blends a scholarship with a field of interest fund. The scholarship criteria does not require a high school degree — but does not exclude applicants with one — and will be awarded to applicants pursuing an education in the trades, apprenticeship, and skilled labor, or two-year degrees in fields that do not require traditional 4-year degrees. The Purewal Fund may award grants to an organization or program that assists individuals in obtaining training for gainful employment, especially for individuals with financial need for such training and education.

The Purewal Fund is an example of the flexibility community foundations have to match donors’ unique ideas to local needs.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation Fellowship Award supports pediatric oncology training through a two-year fellowship, with a potential third year based on need and achievements. This initiative, powered by community fundraising events, aims to advance research for childhood cancer cures. The award provides a salary capped at $97,500 per year, covering salary and benefits for fellows. This fellowship not only fosters professional growth but also contributes significantly to the fight against childhood cancers.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation Research Grant Award supports innovative research aimed at curing childhood cancers. With funding of $100,000 per year for two years, this grant is designed for hypothesis-driven projects that can be laboratory, clinical, or epidemiological in nature. Established through community-driven fundraising events, the foundation empowers volunteers and donors to make a significant impact in the fight against cancer, ensuring a brighter future for young survivors.

The Exploratory Grant Award aims to enhance workforce diversity in basic cancer research by supporting junior and Early Stage Investigators from underrepresented groups in the biomedical and social sciences. This initiative provides essential funding to bridge the gap for researchers completing their training, ensuring they have the resources needed to develop larger grant applications. Applications are due by 5:00 PM local time of the applicant organization, emphasizing the importance of timely submissions.

The Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP), funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), aims to enhance research on Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKDs) and Acute Kidney Injuries (AKIs). Launched in 2017, this initiative focuses on ethical collection and analysis of human kidney tissue to uncover new molecular pathways. With expanded participant recruitment efforts beginning in 2022, the KPMP seeks to advance our understanding of kidney-related health issues.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is extending the Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP) for five years to enhance participant recruitment and tissue interrogation. This initiative aims to discover novel molecular pathways associated with Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKDs) and Acute Kidney Injuries (AKIs). The renewed funding will support robust longitudinal follow-ups for existing enrollees and facilitate the enrollment of new participants, ensuring comprehensive data analysis and collaboration within the research community.
