Schools must commit to offering specific courses during the grant period to qualify for funding.

Grant-in-Aid (GIA) 

"Grant In Aid" is a program that the Alaska State Museum has been offering to museums and cultural centers across Alaska for over four and a half decades! There are two separate tracks that you may apply for. Museums and cultural centers can apply for either a Mini Grant or a Regular Grant but cannot apply for both. 

The Alaska State Museum (ASM) provides Alaska museums with funding to enhance museum services through the annual Grant-in-Aid (GIA) program. 

Both grant programs support projects that supplement or improve the services that a museum provides. Organizations can use grant awards for projects related to collections, exhibits, education, outreach, and organizational development. Funds can be used to purchase supplies and equipment, pay for contractual services or other items necessary to support and improve museum services and operations. Museums are encouraged to submit project proposals in support of consultations with Tribes as required under the new NAGPRA regulations. The program may consider proposals that provide funding for professional development and training. 

Mini Grants

Up to $2,000 are available for small museums and cultural centers with annual operating budgets that are less than $100,000. 

Alaska nonprofits, schools, and other organizations running community service or education programs in Alaska can apply for AmeriCorps State and National funding to engage AmeriCorps members in evidence-based interventions. Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development provides support for projects that strengthen communities, which may include initiatives connected to teacher development or education-focused service.

The Sabbatical Grant by Rasmuson Foundation offers tribal and nonprofit leaders a unique opportunity for personal renewal through a fully funded sabbatical of 90 to 120 days. With grants of $50,000, the program supports leaders in stepping away from their roles to prevent burnout, gain insights, and rejuvenate their energy. This initiative encourages long-term sustainability in leadership and allows organizations to nurture emerging talent while leaders focus on personal enrichment and reflection.

The Western SARE Local Education and Demonstration Grants aim to promote sustainable agriculture through practical demonstrations and educational activities. This program addresses barriers to adopting sustainable practices by integrating findings from previous research. Projects can last up to three years and receive funding of up to $60,000. Successful proposals involve local demonstrations, trainings, and technical assistance, engaging farmers, ranchers, and agricultural professionals in the process of sustainable agriculture adoption.

The Rasmuson Foundation offers Tier 1 Grants aimed at supporting small capital projects and one-time investments for Alaska-based nonprofits and local government entities. With a maximum award of $35,000, these grants are intended for one-time expenses such as technology upgrades and renovations. Applications are accepted year-round and reviewed on a rolling basis, typically resulting in a decision within 90 days. Strong community support and Alaska-specific context are essential for eligibility.

The WaterSMART Enhancing Water Resources Projects program invites eligible entities to secure funding for initiatives that enhance water resource management across various sectors, including conservation, infrastructure improvement, and watershed restoration. Priority is given to projects that collaboratively address community needs and yield significant environmental benefits. This funding opportunity aligns with federal priorities aimed at optimizing resource use and improving grant oversight, as outlined in recent executive orders.

Alaska organizations that educate teachers, students, or communities about health information can apply for the National Library of Medicine’s Express Health Information Outreach Awards; awards US $5,000 for health information literacy and outreach projects. Funding supports improving access to quality biomedical and health information, including technology or activity kits, especially for underrepresented populations.

The Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence: Development Phase (COBRE-D) program aims to enhance biomedical research capacity in IDeA states, which historically receive low NIH funding. By providing critical support for early-career investigators and essential infrastructure, COBRE-D facilitates a long-term vision for institutions. This initiative not only supplements start-up packages for new hires but also establishes research facilities and improves administrative services, paving the way for less-resourced institutions to transition into the COBRE E/S program.

The Garden Club of America Award in Coastal Wetlands Studies supports graduate students engaged in coastal wetlands research. Established through the Rockefeller Environmental Education Fund, this scholarship promotes conservation by funding field work in tidal and nontidal wetlands across coastal states, including the Great Lakes. Eligible applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. graduate program and can propose their own wetlands study. The award aims to foster environmental education and scientific inquiry in this vital ecosystem.

Conservation-focused 501(c)(3) organizations in Alaska planning environmental conservation, preservation, or restoration projects can apply for competitive funding up to US $25,000. Focused on natural resource protection and ecosystem restoration, The Keta Legacy Foundation invites projects that demonstrate innovation, feasibility, strong partnerships, and clear environmental or community significance.

The student must be the son or daughter of a parent(s) who is an employed member of a Law Enforcement Agency that operates within Baldwin County or a student who plans to major in a Law Enforcement field, i.e., Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, etc. Students must have academic achievements necessary for entry into an accredited college or university. Students’ need, academic performance and community service will all be considered in the selection process.

Non-Traditional Scholarships

There are many traditional Scholarship and Financial Aid resources for high school kids going on to college. This is great but it leaves a whole lot of people out of the solution. Kids who couldn’t go directly to college or didn’t finish highschool – Adults who are in a job that cannot effectively support their family and want to make a change – or anyone simply looking for a better life. The resources available to them are limited. We want to work with organizations that are addressing those challenges and see if there’s a connection to be made, an existing program to utilize or even a new program to be developed.
