Grants from California Casualty help educators who are members of eligible education associations secure US $300 to subsidize specific music or art program needs at their schools.

The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region

The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region works with individuals and families to create permanent gifts for our community. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that manages and distributes charitable giving in the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline, and the City of Fredericksburg.

The Homeless Animals Support Network Fund

This fund, entrusted to the foundation in 2023, is the next step in the evolution of the Homeless Animals Support Network - HASN’s mission to meet the needs of homeless animals all over Virginia.

The work began in October of 2012 as a non-profit fundraising organization dedicated to saving lives and advocating for homeless animals in Prince William County. Realizing the need for assistance stretches across the state, HASN expanded to help other small animal rescue organizations throughout Virginia.

The purpose of the fund is to provide support on an as-needed basis for small rescues and shelters throughout the state of Virginia, to aid in the shared goal of a No-Kill VA. Realizing that not all rescues and communities have access to needed resources, the fund will bridge the gap by advocating for and providing grant assistance and resources to underserved and impoverished communities and homeless pets all across Virginia. Small shelters are defined as those with budgets of $300,000 or less.

Program examples include:

• Foster programs aimed at keeping pets out of animal shelters,
• Return to Home programs that assist owners through technology, microchipping, and other resources,
• Shelter Surrender Intervention aimed at assisting pet owners in need or crisis, to prevent them from surrendering their pets to the shelter,
• Foster programs for victims of domestic violence or those facing temporary traumatic instances,
• Assisting pets of the homeless and/or low-income pet owners with medical treatments as part of community outreach. For example, Spay/ Neuter programs, vaccines, behavioral assistance, food, and supplies, etc.,
• Spay/Neuter services,
• Something cool and unique that YOUR community needs! 

The NCAC-SOT Fall Symposium Trainee Abstract Award supports students and postdoctoral researchers presenting their work at the National Capital Area Chapter Fall Symposium. Eligible candidates must be enrolled full-time in an academic program within the MD, VA, DC region and submit a concise research description. Awards include $200 for first place and $100 for second place, encouraging scholarly engagement and innovation among trainees.

Scholarships are offered to students living in the Richmond region and other Virginia locations. Each scholarship was established by a generous individual, family, or organization with a desire to assist high school students, recent high school graduates, and adult learners to continue their education. 

Moss-Henderson Scholarship

The Moss-Henderson Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 to support the postsecondary educational pursuits of qualifying graduates of Mathews County public schools who plan to enroll in an accredited college or university in the state of Virginia with a preference for those students planning to enroll at the University of Virginia. Students interested in any area of study are encouraged to apply, however, preference will be given to students interested in teaching children with learning disabilities. 

The Creative Community Partnership Grants aim to bolster local and tribal governments' support for the arts in Virginia. Grants of up to $4,500 are available to fund independent arts organizations, focusing on community impact and underserved populations. Eligibility includes independent city, town, county, or tribal governments, while funds cannot be used for performer payments. This initiative fosters a vibrant arts culture by encouraging local investment in creative projects.

Graduating high school seniors in Virginia pursuing higher education can apply for the Sofia Silva Scholarship, which supports students who excel academically and are active in church and community service. With a mission to strengthen education, the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region provides this scholarship to eligible students from specified Fredericksburg-area schools.

The SESAPS Francis Slack Award, established by the Southeastern Section of the American Physical Society, honors individuals who have selflessly contributed to advancing physics in the Southeast. It recognizes efforts in enhancing research facilities, strengthening academic departments, and fostering regional physics organizations. Nominations remain active for three years, with a focus on encouraging women and minority candidates. This prestigious award commemorates the legacy of Francis G. A 1:1 cash match is required for funding, ensuring that projects are sustainable and impactful. The BMSS Best Trainee Abstract Award, presented by the Society of Toxicology, recognizes the best biologically-based computational modeling abstract at the SOT Annual Meeting. This prestigious award, aimed at students and postdoctoral researchers, promotes excellence in toxicological research. The award highlights the Society's commitment to diversity and innovation in science, encouraging a wide range of perspectives in the field. Winning authors receive an achievement plaque, celebrating their contributions to advancing toxicology.

The VCA Arts in Practice Grants program aims to enhance access to high-quality artist-led residencies across Virginia. Starting July 1, 2025, this rolling grant allows eligible organizations to receive up to 50% reimbursement of residency fees, with a maximum of $2,000. Activities must engage Virginia's communities through dynamic educational programming, supporting diverse learning environments for all ages. Interested applicants should apply at least two weeks prior to their scheduled activities.

The ASB Research Award (Professional), offered by the Association of Southeastern Biologists, honors outstanding research by professional members (not students) with a $1000 grant. Applicants must be the primary author of a manuscript published after the last ASB annual meeting and must present their findings at the upcoming annual meeting. The awardee is recognized at the Closing Banquet, emphasizing the importance of attendance. This initiative promotes scientific advancement and networking among biology professionals.

Virginia high school students pursuing higher education, especially those attending Stafford County Schools, can apply for the ShackLAX Memorial Scholarship to support college costs. The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region honors Aaron M. Shacklette’s legacy, and teachers or counselors may guide eligible students seeking education-related support in Virginia.

Students pursuing higher education in Virginia can apply for the Seay Family Scholarship Fund, which supports graduates of Fredericksburg City Schools, Spotsylvania County Schools, Fredericksburg Academy, and Fredericksburg Christian School. Administered by the Community Foundation of Rappahannock River Region, this scholarship may benefit teachers or future educators advancing their education.

Local Virginia students pursuing vocational or construction trade training who need help buying tools, protective gear, or other essential equipment may be eligible for this support. The Community Foundation of Rappahannock River Region’s Schmidt Trade Construction Fund assists those enrolled in high school or community college industry or construction certification programs with practical training resources.

The Norfolk Southern Corporate Giving: Thriving Communities Grant Program supports initiatives that promote sustainability, workforce development, and community resilience across a 22-state network. With grants ranging from $1,000 to $50,000, the program aims to foster economic development and ensure equal access to basic necessities. Eligible organizations include tax-exempt nonprofits, government entities, and public schools, emphasizing diversity and inclusion in their community-focused efforts.

The Norfolk Southern Corporate Giving: Safety First Grant Program aims to enhance community safety across its 22-state network. With grants ranging from $1,000 to $15,000, it supports organizations that provide safety services or promote safe behavior. This program reflects Norfolk Southern's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, empowering employees to engage locally. By investing in safety and workforce development, Norfolk Southern fosters thriving communities, demonstrating its dedication to social responsibility and community well-being.

The Appalachian Region Healthcare Support Program aims to enhance healthcare delivery in rural areas by providing technical assistance to organizations such as critical access hospitals and rural health clinics. By focusing on planning and implementing healthcare service improvements, the program seeks to strengthen the operational performance and quality of care within these communities, ultimately benefiting the residents served by the Appalachian Regional Commission.

The DC Mayor’s Scholars Undergraduate Program provides need-based funding for District of Columbia residents pursuing their first associate or bachelor’s degree at select colleges. As a last-dollar award, it helps cover tuition gaps after other financial aid. Eligible applicants must have been DC residents for at least a year, maintain satisfactory academic progress, and have household incomes below 300% of the federal poverty guidelines. Funding caps are $4,000 annually, with limits on total awards.

The Wawa Foundation offers financial grants exceeding $2,500 to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations in its six-state market, focusing on health, hunger, and supporting everyday heroes. Applications are accepted in January, April, July, and October, with grant requests reviewed prior to the next submission window. Eligible organizations include those working to improve lives through health initiatives, hunger relief efforts, and support for community heroes. This initiative emphasizes health, hunger, and community heroes, ensuring that support is directed toward registered 501(c)(3) organizations within Wawa's operational areas. Applicants can expect feedback within four weeks after submission, with ongoing inquiries accepted until budget limits are reached, encouraging re-application for future funding.

Alcohol Education and Prevention Grants

Virginia ABC seeks to partner, collaborate and build capacity with those who share in promoting our message of alcohol safety and responsibility. Through Education and Prevention, Virginia ABC offers annual Alcohol Education and Prevention Grants of up to $10,000.

Grantees are encouraged to build partnerships and embrace collaboration to achieve a meaningful, measurable and long-lasting impact. Members of the Community Health & Engagement team stay in contact throughout the grant cycle to provide support and encourage success.

The School Safety Personnel and Programming Grant, offered by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, provides funding for school safety personnel and necessary equipment. It aims to enhance the safety of students and staff through effective training and programming. Eligible local governments can apply for grants to establish new safety positions, manage related expenses, and foster collaborations between law enforcement and schools. This initiative promotes proactive measures to prevent crime and violence in educational environments.
