Special Funding Opportunities: Community Garden Grants

Community Gardens which are defined are small patches of land that are used to connect community members to nature. These gardens are engaged in minimal food production (as opposed to larger urban farms).

This project-based funding is for those organizations looking to establish community gardens on previously underutilized green spaces or to improve upon and/or expand existing gardens. This could be patches of land connected with schools, houses of worship, community centers, etc. Organizations can apply for up to $5,000 per garden. An organization is eligible to apply for support of multiple gardens in one application.

The Land, Health, Community Grant Program: Chicagoland, administered by The Lumpkin Family Foundation, focuses on fostering healthy communities through funding for innovative, collaborative projects. Grants of up to $10,000 are available for organizations that aim to address systemic inequalities and promote health and wellness. This program seeks initiatives that enhance access to nutritious food, support mental health, and engage communities in sustainable practices, ultimately striving to create vibrant, equitable neighborhoods in the Chicagoland area.

The Social Services Grant Program, offered by the City of Naperville, aims to enhance community welfare through financial support for social services. Eligible non-profit organizations can apply for funding to address local needs in areas such as emergency assistance, mental health, and youth services. Emphasizing transportation and mental health initiatives, the program encourages organizations to demonstrate community impact and ongoing fundraising efforts. This program operates annually, with assessments conducted to align funding priorities with emerging community needs.

The 510-FEPP First Episode Presentation Program, funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services, aims to provide evidence-based treatment for early serious mental illness, particularly first episode psychosis. Utilizing Coordinated Specialty Care teams, the program targets individuals aged 14-40 who have experienced psychosis within the last 18 months. It focuses on reducing symptoms, improving functioning, and promoting recovery while addressing systemic inequities and fostering inclusivity across diverse communities.

The Teens for Tomorrow Grant, offered by the Quad Cities Community Foundation, empowers high school students to support nonprofits in Rock Island County, IL, and Scott County, IA. With a total of $10,000 available each year, grants focus on critical community issues such as domestic violence, homelessness, immigration support, and food insecurity. Eligible 501(c)3 organizations can apply for operational and program support to enhance the well-being of local residents.

The Community Support Team Grant Program by the Illinois Department of Human Services aims to enhance services for Northwest Crisis Care System consumers who lack funding in specific counties. This initiative will promote access to vital nursing and psychiatric treatment, responding to individual needs identified in assessments. The program prioritizes diversity and equity, addressing systemic barriers to ensure inclusivity across all demographics and fostering a supportive environment for those facing socioeconomic challenges.

The Mental Health Juvenile Justice (MHJJ) Program connects the Illinois Juvenile Court System, schools, and communities to support youth at risk of mental health issues. The MHJJ Liaison facilitates referrals and provides training to stakeholders, ensuring youth receive necessary services. Additionally, the program addresses systemic inequities, promoting diversity and inclusivity within the service provision process. The Illinois Department of Human Services emphasizes collaboration and community-based support to enhance the well-being of at-risk youth.

The Communityworks Grant Competition, run by the Community Foundation of Kankakee River Valley, aims to enhance community welfare through targeted funding. Focus areas include Early Childhood Education, Land Use & Protection, and Workforce Development. Grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations in Kankakee and Iroquois Counties, emphasizing initiatives that address unmet community needs. By fostering collaboration and innovative solutions, the Foundation seeks to ensure sustainable improvements in quality of life for local residents.

The Land, Health, Community Grant Program, formerly known as Aspiramos Juntos, focuses on fostering holistically healthy communities in the Chicago region. Funded by the Lumpkin Family Foundation, this grant supports projects that promote physical activity, access to healthy food, and mental wellness for youth. Priority is given to grassroots organizations with budgets under $500,000 that are deeply connected to their communities. Special funding opportunities include grants for community gardens and inspiring collaborative projects up to $10,000.

The RBHA Regions Rural Behavioral Health Access program aims to enhance mental health services in Stark and Marshall counties. It focuses on crisis intervention, case management, and community outreach, employing two full-time mental health professionals. The program also provides training for educators and first responders to better identify mental health needs, while promoting awareness through community events. This initiative addresses systemic inequities, fostering inclusivity and diversity in service provision.

The African American Legacy Grants, initiated by The Chicago Community Trust, aims to enhance the quality of life for Black communities in metropolitan Chicago. This program supports Black-led organizations focused on community wealth building, mobilization, and care. Grants range from $15,000 to $75,000 depending on the project's scope, promoting initiatives like worker cooperatives and mental health services. The grants prioritize organizations that are responsive to community needs and emphasize collective impact through shared ownership and democratic participation.

Illinois Children’s Healthcare Foundation

The Illinois Children’s Healthcare Foundation (ILCHF) has a single vision that: every child in Illinois grows up healthy. Working with grantee partners across the state, ILCHF focuses its grant making on identifying and funding solutions to address the barriers that prevent children from accessing the ongoing healthcare they need, with a primary focus on children’s oral health and mental health.

ILCHF was created in December 2002 through an action of then-Attorney General Jim Ryan and an Illinois insurance carrier. This action and a settlement of approximately $125 million established Illinois’ only statewide private foundation focused solely on the health needs of children. Since inception, ILCHF has awarded approximately $149 million in nearly 900 grants to more than 300 organizations across the state.

“Bright Minds, Bright Smiles”: Mental and Oral Health Integration Initiative

The Illinois Children’s Healthcare Foundation (ILCHF) seeks to provide 20 three-year grants of up to $300,000 each (for a total investment of $6,000,000) to eligible children’s safety-net organizations that are sustaining and enhancing the coordination of existing children’s mental health or oral health services for Illinois children from vulnerable communities.

Examples of eligible projects include, but are not limited to, sustaining direct service provision to children, strengthening care coordination, enhancing referral networks, expanding co-located services in community settings, and building capacity to better serve children enrolled in Medicaid.

The RIPS Regions IPS Trainers program, initiated by the Illinois Department of Human Services, aims to support agencies in implementing Individual Placement and Support (IPS) programs across the state. Through the recruitment of full-time IPS Trainers, the program ensures comprehensive training and technical assistance, enhancing the sustainability of IPS initiatives. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of equity and diversity in service provision, striving to create an inclusive environment that benefits all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds.

The CRSS Success Program, managed by the Illinois Department of Human Services, aims to enhance the behavioral health workforce by providing comprehensive recovery support training and practical experience for individuals seeking Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) or Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) credentials. This initiative addresses systemic inequities while promoting inclusivity across diverse demographics, ensuring that those with lived experiences in mental health and substance use recovery have the support needed to succeed in their roles.
