The Advancing Communities grant program helps communities across Nebraska and southwest Iowa develop or enhance spaces that are inviting to all citizens, enabling connection through social, recreational, historical and civic engagement. By supporting capital projects that make great community assets — from libraries and youth rec centers to parks, trails, museums and more — we encourage our neighbors to get out and explore.

Advancing Communities Grant

Projects for consideration should align with the following themes:

• Shared spaces such as libraries, parks, trails and community centers — that encourage engagement and make towns more vibrant places to live, work and gather.
• Innovative ideas and forward-thinking approaches that engage multiple generations, introduce new ideas or bring fresh energy into existing community spaces.
• Community-led efforts, including partnerships among public, private and nonprofit sectors, with priority given to initiatives that demonstrate collaboration, local investment and community-driven vision.
• Sustainable, ready-to-launch projects that have secured at least 60% of their total funding and show clear plans for long-term maintenance, sustainability and measurable community benefit.

The CBE Community Outreach Program Grant empowers local charities in Iowa, Tennessee, and Texas by providing financial support through employee donations. With contributions ranging from $5 to $25 per paycheck, CBE Companies donates over $15,000 quarterly to foster community engagement. This initiative reflects CBE's commitment to making a meaningful impact through partnerships and volunteerism, enhancing the quality of life in the communities they serve.

State Historical Society of Iowa

The State Historical Society of Iowa is the official historical repository of the State of Iowa, providing grants, education, and outreach about Iowa’s history.

The society preserves and provides access to Iowa’s historical resources through programs, exhibitions and projects while advocating for Iowa’s past and serving as a connector to the future.

Historical Resource Development Program

The program provides grant funding to help preserve, conserve, interpret, enhance, and educate the public about Iowa’s historical assets. The Historical Resource Development Program provides funding for documentary collections, historic preservation and museums. 

Emergency Historical Resource Development Program

Emergency HRDP applications will be accepted each year on July 1. Funds are limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

The differences between the regular grant application process and the emergency application process are as follows:

• Please contact the grants manager by email or phone to see if funds are available.
• Attach a cover letter that explains the threat to the resource.
• The threat to the resource cannot be due to delinquency on the part of the current owner.
• If new ownership is the reason for the emergency, the new owner must have taken ownership within the previous 12 months.
• The maximum grant request is $15,000.
• Funds become available at the beginning of each fiscal year, July 1st. There isn’t a specific deadline. Submit the application as soon as it is ready, as long as it is not prior to July 1st if you are requesting funds from the next fiscal year.
• Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until all emergency funds for each grant category are expended.
• A staff grants steering committee reviews the applications. Allow up to 30 days for review.
• Eligible properties in the historic preservation category will have an opinion of eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places from the State Historic Preservation Office.

The Iowa Humanities Mini Grants provide funding up to $3,000 for organizations aiming to promote cultural understanding and community engagement. Applications are accepted year-round, with a preference for submissions at least four weeks before project start dates. Humanities scholars play a vital role in these projects, encouraging public dialogue and critical thinking. However, due to funding constraints, the availability of these grants is currently uncertain as federal funding has been terminated until further notice.

Humanities Project Grants

Humanities Project Grants offer support for public humanities projects that encourage contemplation, spark conversation and engage the community. Eligible projects will use the humanities as the central resource to involve and benefit diverse groups of Iowans through educational programming that explore the human experience.

Funding for the Humanities Project Grant is made possible by an appropriation from the National Endowment for the Humanities, a federal agency, to the Iowa Department of Administrative Services. The program is administered by the State Historical Society of Iowa on behalf of the department. Applicants must adhere to the published guidelines of the Humanities Project Grant and federal government through 2 CFR Part 200.

Applicants may request funding for eligible one-time project expenses that are incurred and expended within the eligible funding period. 

Eligible Projects

Eligible projects should focus on the humanities and must demonstrate public value to Iowans through deliberate public engagement and access to project activities. Types of eligible projects could include community discussions, lecture series, workshops, films, interpretive exhibits, podcasts, etc. Projects that involve the creative or performing arts could be eligible as long as they are a catalyst in a project in which humanities are central, and include interpretation and/or discussion of performances, concerts, literary and art works.

Humanities must be central to the project. The humanities include the study and interpretation of what makes us human. Subject areas include archaeology, comparative religion, cultural anthropology, ethics, folklore, gender studies, history, jurisprudence, languages, law, linguistics, literature (including novels, poetry, drama, and other forms of written expression, both modern and classical), philosophy, and the interpretation (not the creation) of the arts. Aspects of the social sciences, such as political science and sociology, that can help us to explore our humanity and discover meaning in our lives and community are also included. 

Some project examples:

• Public forums or conferences
• Lecture/discussion series; honoraria and travel for speakers and presenters
• Book/film discussion programs about humanities-related topics
• Interpretive exhibits and catalogs
• Digital projects like short or full length documentary films, radio shows, and podcasts
• Pre-performance talks or post-performance facilitated discussions that present the historical and social context of the artform being presented and its impact on today’s culture
• Lecture/recital programs that look at the history of the artform and show examples of that artform
• Workshops that incorporate the history and cultural influence of an artform with training in that artform
• Talks given by culture bearers recognized for their knowledge of the history and cultural impact of a folk or traditional artform followed by a presentation
• Living history portrayal of a historical figure ending in discussion with a scholar

All project activities must have a clear beginning and end date within the eligible funding period.

• Applicants may only apply for support of a yearly event or series if the applicant can demonstrate how the project is unique and worthy of support within the particular year of the funding period. Project content must change from year to year.

Humanities Expert

At least one humanities scholar/expert is required to participate in the project.

Eligible projects need to involve a humanities expert. They could be someone with an advanced degree in a humanities discipline or someone who is otherwise well-qualified to bring a humanities perspective to a project, such as a historian, library or museum professional, culture bearer, or individual who is an acknowledged cultural expert within their community.

If an individual is the applicant, they could serve as the humanities expert on the project if they have the required expertise.

The humanities expert should be engaged with the project during the application process. Prior to submitting an application, the humanities expert and applicant should:

• Discuss the project and formulate ways to strengthen the humanities aspects
• Explore the involvement of additional experts who may offer diverse perspectives
• Review the application to help clarify goals and methodology

During the grant project, humanities experts could:

• Serve as a speaker, panelist, or lead a discussion 
• Offer ongoing advice and guidance
• Review materials for authenticity and diversity of perspective
• Assist with project evaluation

The Gupta Family Foundation Grant aims to empower disadvantaged individuals by providing financial support to organizations that foster self-reliance. Headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, the foundation offers grants ranging from $5,000 to over $250,000, prioritizing smaller organizations with a strong commitment to their missions. Eligibility typically includes US-based IRS 501(c)(3) entities, with operations extending to countries like India and Kenya. The foundation emphasizes mission alignment and effective resource allocation to ensure maximum impact.

The Jack Lewis Safety Fund, established by the Walter Scott Family Foundation, honors Dr. Jack K. Lewis and supports Nebraska and southwest Iowa communities. Grants up to $50,000 are available for safety-related projects, including equipment, training, and facility improvements. Applicants must serve communities with 5,000 or fewer residents or be located in specific counties. Priority is given to projects showcasing local fundraising and collaboration. Applications are accepted year-round with specific deadlines for review cycles.

The Community Facilities Grant Program in Iowa provides essential funding to develop community facilities in rural areas, supporting services such as healthcare, education, and public safety. Eligible areas include towns with up to 20,000 residents, including Federally Recognized Tribal Lands. Only one application per organization is accepted each year, and funding is limited to one year. Unqualified organizations, including political entities, are ineligible.

Project Types

Examples of projects in the Historic Preservation category are:

• Acquire, develop or preserve real property listed on the National Register of Historic Places
• Purchase equipment to rehabilitate a property listed on the National Register of Historic Places
• Survey historic and prehistoric sites
• Nominate properties to the National Register of Historic Places
• Interpret historic properties and sites
• Educate the public; train staff; or hire consultants who are experts on historic preservation

Eligible Property Types & Activities

• A National Historic Landmark: The National Park Service defines this as a “historic property evaluated and found to have significance at the national level and designated as such by the Secretary of the Interior.” There are only 29 such properties in Iowa.

• Individually Listed on the National Register of Historic Places: A historic property that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places on its own, not as part of a historic district. It may also be contributing to a listed historic district, but is also listed on its own.

• A Contributing Resource to a Property or District Listed on the National Register of Historic Places: The National Park Service defines this as a “building, site, structure, or object adding to the historic significance of a property.” These contributing resources must be part of the National Register nomination for the property or district and must still be considered contributing to the property or district. A “district” is defined by the National Park Service as a “significant concentration, linkage, or continuity of sites, buildings, structures, or objects united historically or aesthetically by plan or physical development.”

• A Property or District That Has an Opinion of Eligibility for Listing on the National Register of Historic Places: Properties or districts that meet the eligibility criteria, but have not yet been listed, are eligible for HRDP funds to nominate the property or district to the National Register or for emergency grants, through our emergency application process. Emergency applications are accepted until each year’s funds are expended. The emergency allocation is replenished each July 1st.

• A Historic or Prehistoric Site Survey: The National Park Service defines survey as the “process of identifying and gathering data on a community’s historic resources.” It is strongly encouraged that you discuss this type of project with the State Historic Preservation Office prior to application.

• Educating the Public About Historic Preservation: HRDP can fund workshops or conferences to educate the public about historic preservation. Funds can also be used to train staff or hire consultants who are experts in historic preservation.
