DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities
The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH) is an independent agency in the District of Columbia government. First established in 1968, it evaluates and initiates action on matters relating to the arts and humanities. Additionally, CAH encourages programs and the development of programs that promote progress in the arts and humanities. CAH is the designated state arts agency for the District of Columbia. It is supported primarily through District government funds. Additionally, it receives partial support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
East Arts Grant Program
The East Arts (EA) grant program supports nonprofit arts, humanities, arts education, and service organizations. Strong applicants showcase their contributions to DC as a world-class cultural capital.
Program Objectives
This grant opportunity program goals are to:
- Provide access to high-quality arts and humanities experiences for residents of the NE and SE quadrants of the District of Columbia.
- Enhance the quality of life of District residents by supporting vibrant community identities through the arts and humanities.
- Support activities that highlight and elevate the creative excellence and accomplishments of artists and arts programing in NE and SE DC.

DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities
The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH) is an independent agency in the District of Columbia government. First established in 1968, it evaluates and initiates action on matters relating to the arts and humanities. Additionally, CAH encourages programs and the development of programs that promote progress in the arts and humanities. CAH is the designated state arts agency for the District of Columbia. Projects, Events, or Festivals
Projects, Events, or Festivals (PEF) furthers CAH’s mission by encouraging progress in the arts and humanities in the District of Columbia by supporting Individuals and non-profit arts, humanities, arts education, and service organizations who significantly contribute to the District of Columbia as a world-class cultural capital. This grant opportunity program goals:
- Provide access to high-quality arts and humanities experiences for all District of Columbia residents.
- Improve quality of life by supporting vibrant community projects within the arts and humanities.
- Strengthen the creative economy through investments in local individuals and organizations.
PEF is open for projects of all sizes that show District impact and engage District residents and visitors.
CAH encourages community-based projects that share characteristics such as geographic location, common interests, or community impact. Arts and humanities projects may include but are not limited to: concerts; visual arts exhibitions; literary readings; or festivals that feature dance, folk art, film, music, theatre and other art forms.

General Operating Support (GOS)
The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH) is soliciting applications from qualified arts, humanities, or arts education organizations for its Fiscal Year 2027 General Operating Support Grant Program (GOS). Award amounts vary. An award to an individual organization with an annual operating budget exceeding $115,000 may not exceed 50% of the organization's annual operating budget exclusive of funds granted by the Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
Capacity Building Applicants
Applicant organizations must not have previously received a competitive grant award from CAH.
This category consists of arts and humanities organizations whose primary purpose is to present and/or produce arts and humanities experiences for the residents of, and visitors to, the District of Columbia. This cohort will support arts and humanities organizations that have not previously been awarded a competitive grant by CAH. Organizations must have been in operation for at least one year by the start of the fiscal year to which they are applying. Capacity Building needs can include but are not limited to staff training, longer organizational initiatives, and sector-strengthening that increases access and awareness of programs for the DC community.
