Friends of NRA is the National Rifle Association’s premier fundraising program, supporting the future of shooting sports. Since day one, Friends of NRA has been a 100% grassroots effort fueled by a united front to secure the Second Amendment and raise money for the shooting sports.

Committee volunteers are appointed to State Fund Committees to make recommendations for local grant funding in areas such as youth education, women-focused clinics, law enforcement training, hunter safety, range improvement, firearms and marksmanship training and safety. Recognizing the impact American youth has on the future of the shooting sports, State Fund Committees frequently recommend grants for youth programs, allocating the most significant portion of monies to this vital area.

Grant awards fund activities and support programs in the United States to promote firearms and hunting safety, to enhance marksmanship skills of those in the shooting sports, and to educate the public about firearms in their historic, technological and artistic context.

Friends of NRA State Fund Grant Program - Michigan

The Friends of NRA State Fund Grant Program provides supplies, equipment, and financial support to a variety of qualified groups and programs at the local level; geared towards youth, women, law enforcement, veterans, the disabled, and the general public, including:

• General shooting programs
• Competitive shooting
• Education, training and safety
• Hunting and conservation
• Community outreach
• Historical education

Grant funding must be used to further a charitable purpose as defined by the Internal Revenue Code under section 501(c)(3) and accompanying rules, regulations, and other IRS law and materials.

Nonprofits and research or advocacy groups working on gun violence prevention, justice reform, or violence intervention in Michigan can access funding through the Joyce Foundation’s Gun Violence Prevention & Justice Reform Program. Grants support policy development, research, advocacy, pilot initiatives, and community-based violence intervention with a strong emphasis on racial equity and impact in the Great Lakes region.

Health systems, hospitals, FQHCs, and community-based health centers in Michigan and across the U.S. can apply for Kaiser Permanente Advisory Services’ Center for Gun Violence Research and Education grants, awarding up to US $300,000 for healthcare-focused gun violence and firearm suicide research. Projects may build research capacity or expand evidence-informed clinical care models.

Nonprofit public charities with 501(c)(3) status working on national democracy, civil liberties, and gun violence prevention initiatives can apply for the Lisa & Douglas Goldman Fund’s invitation-only support. Programs must operate across the U.S., not just Michigan, and focus on voting rights, money in politics, or policy and education efforts to prevent gun violence.

Students in Michigan who are at least 18, enrolled in high school, college, or graduate programs, and personally impacted by gun violence can access advocacy and leadership training through this fellowship. Focused on survivor storytelling and gun violence prevention, Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund helps fellows share their experiences to drive community and policy change.

Women recognized nationally for advancing shooting sports, firearms education, or Second Amendment advocacy may be eligible for this national honor, which can include Michigan-based leaders. The NRA Foundation’s Sybil Ludington Women’s Freedom Award celebrates women whose competitive shooting, educational work, legal efforts, or volunteer service significantly support firearm safety and the NRA’s mission.

Organizations and institutions conducting healthcare research on firearm-related harms can apply for capacity-building grants, including those in Michigan. Focused on healthcare-based gun violence prevention, Kaiser Permanente invites projects that build research capacity to develop, test, and scale clinical interventions and health system strategies, especially in communities most impacted by firearm injury and death.

Healthcare institutions and research organizations in Michigan working on gun violence prevention can access funding through Kaiser Permanente for pilot or formative healthcare research. Grants from Kaiser Permanente help Michigan gun violence prevention efforts expand or test evidence-informed clinical care models addressing firearm violence or firearm suicide, with up to US $250,000 available per project.

Research institutions and other eligible organizations studying gun violence prevention in Michigan and nationwide can apply for CDC support to rigorously evaluate innovative strategies to reduce firearm-related injuries, deaths, and crime. With a mission to prevent injuries, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides up to US $650,000 for evaluations using existing or newly collected data.

The Preventing Violence Affecting Young Lives (PREVAYL 2.0) initiative aims to provide multiyear funding for state and local health departments to implement violence prevention strategies for adolescents and young adults. Key focuses include enhancing data-driven decision-making, building capacity for evidence-based strategies, integrating youth mental health support, fostering multisector collaborations, and prioritizing the prevention of various forms of violence, ensuring comprehensive support for youth development.

Jewish community–focused 501(c)(3) public charities in Michigan or those working nationally can apply for the Lisa & Douglas Goldman Fund’s invitation-only support to advance Jewish life and safety. Funding may back efforts to combat antisemitism, address gun violence, or run innovative, experiential Jewish programs, following an initial letter of inquiry.
