Community Foundation of New Jersey

Over our 46-year history, the Community Foundation of New Jersey has collaborated with individuals, families, organizations, and businesses to design charitable funds and implement the philanthropic solutions they want to see in their communities. We leverage $1.17 billion in assets and 1,200 funds to help our partners think boldly and creatively about ways to give.

Scholarship Fund Overview

Beyond a shared commitment to educational opportunity, families establish scholarship funds with a variety of goals and purposes in mind. They may offer traditional scholarships or customize fund awards for alternative scholarships.

Currently, CFNJ administers more than 135 scholarship funds. Our scholarship opportunities run the gamut, from those exclusive to a local high school or geographic region to those supporting specific majors or career pursuits. Last year, we awarded over $2 million in scholarship assistance to 271 scholars.

Applicants may be evaluated on academic performance; extracurricular activities; community involvement; paid or unpaid work; and a statement of their personal aspirations, educational goals, and demonstrated unmet financial need in our scholarship review process.

Elsie E. and Joseph W. Beck Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior from Christian Brothers Academy (Holmdel), Seton Hall Prep (West Orange), Marymount School (NYC), St. Benedict's Prep (Newark), or Saint Vincent Academy (Newark). The award is based on merit and unmet need.

The Sid W. Richardson Foundation provides grants aimed at enhancing educational and health initiatives for nonprofit organizations in Texas. Established in 1947, the foundation supports programs that align with its mission to serve the people of Texas. Eligibility is restricted to tax-exempt organizations, and applicants must submit a preliminary inquiry before applying. Notably, the foundation does not fund individual projects or events such as school trips and fundraisers.

The Small Dams Program by the Lower Platte North NRD offers cost-share funding for landowners to construct small dams for flood control and drainage improvement. Eligible participants can receive up to 65% funding, or 75% in priority watersheds, with a maximum of $15,000 per project. Additional funding may be available based on specific site conditions. This initiative aims to enhance watershed management and support local landowners in sustainable land use practices.

The Faculty Travel Grant for AGU Annual Meeting supports early-to-mid career faculty from under-resourced institutions, including community colleges and minority-serving institutions. This program aims to facilitate attendance at the AGU Annual Meeting, which attracts over 22,000 geoscience professionals globally. Awardees receive a $1,700 travel stipend, access to professional development workshops, and networking opportunities, enabling them to enhance their research and teaching capabilities through collaboration and innovation.

The Otto Krayer Award in Pharmacology recognizes individuals whose contributions to the field embody the ethical standards and scholarly excellence of Otto Krayer. Established in 1985 and reactivated in 2017, this biennial award includes a $2,500 honorarium and a plaque. It aims to honor ASPET members who demonstrate commitment to teaching and support for young scientists, fostering interdisciplinary research that advances drug action understanding.

The David Lehr Award, funded by the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, supports preclinical and clinical research aimed at enhancing human health. Offering $50,000 annually for two years, this award encourages applications from experienced investigators needing funds for competitive renewals or preliminary data for new grants. Emphasizing diversity, the award aims to empower underrepresented researchers in the field. Awarded biennially, it fosters innovative pharmacologic approaches to advance healthcare.

The Pharmacia-ASPET Award for Experimental Therapeutics recognizes groundbreaking research in pharmacology and experimental therapeutics. Established in 1969 and renamed in 2002, it honors research that significantly impacts disease treatment. The recipient receives a $2,500 honorarium, a commemorative plaque, and coverage for travel to the ASPET Annual Meeting. Nominations are welcomed from ASPET members, particularly those from underrepresented communities, emphasizing diversity and inclusion in the field.

The Robert R. Ruffolo Career Achievement Award in Pharmacology, established in 2011, honors outstanding contributions to drug discovery and development. This prestigious award is presented annually during the ASPET Annual Meeting and includes a $2,500 honorarium, a commemorative medal, and travel expenses for the recipient and their spouse. Candidates, nominated by ASPET members, should demonstrate exceptional originality and impact in pharmacology, with a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion in the nomination process.

The Reynold Spector Award in Clinical Pharmacology and Translational Medicine, established in 2014 by ASPET, honors excellence in clinical pharmacology research and teaching. Presented biennially during the ASPET Annual Meeting, this award includes an $8,000 honorarium, a commemorative plaque, and travel expenses for the winner and their spouse. Nominations are open to ASPET members, with a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion in the selection process.

The J.H. Woods Early Career Award in Behavioral Pharmacology recognizes outstanding original research by early career investigators in the field. Sponsored by the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, this annual award includes a $500 honorarium, a commemorative certificate, and up to $750 for travel expenses to the ASPET Annual Meeting. Candidates must be ASPET members and nominated by an existing member, ensuring a commitment to excellence in behavioral pharmacology.

The P.B. Dews Lifetime Achievement Award for Research in Behavioral Pharmacology is a biennial honor recognizing outstanding contributions in behavioral pharmacology. Sponsored by the ASPET Division for Behavioral Pharmacology, it celebrates excellence in research and teaching. The award, supported by various esteemed organizations, includes a $1,000 honorarium, a plaque, and partial travel expenses for the recipient to present a special lecture at the ASPET Annual Meeting. Nominations are open to ASPET members.

The Hearst Journalism Awards Program, established in 1960, supports undergraduate journalism education through a range of competitions and substantial awards totaling up to $700,000. Open to students enrolled in ACEJMC-accredited institutions, the program encourages excellence in writing, photojournalism, audio, television, and multimedia. With opportunities for individual and group submissions, it aims to foster talent and enrich the field of journalism, while the Hearst Foundation continues its legacy of educational philanthropy.

The Hearst Journalism Awards Program, established in 1960, offers scholarships for exceptional performance in journalism at the collegiate level, with a total of up to $700,000 in awards. This program includes various competitions across writing, photojournalism, audio, television, and multimedia formats. Open to undergraduate journalism majors and minors from accredited institutions, it encourages students to showcase their work and gain recognition in the field of journalism.

The Division for Translational and Clinical Pharmacology Early Career Awards recognize outstanding contributions from early career scientists in translational and clinical pharmacology. Awardees receive support for travel expenses, up to $700, to attend the ASPET Annual Meeting, where they can present their research and network with peers. This initiative aims to foster professional development and collaboration within the pharmacology community.

The ASPET Poster Awards for Postdoctoral Scientists recognize exceptional poster presentations at the ASPET Annual Meeting. Open to members in good standing, the competition highlights outstanding scientific research from young scientists. Awards include cash prizes, with $300 for first place, $200 for second, and $100 for third. Eligible applicants must submit one abstract and be presenting authors. This opportunity encourages participation from those engaged in pharmacology-related research, fostering innovation and excellence in the field.

The ASPET Poster Awards recognize outstanding poster presentations by graduate and post-baccalaureate students at the ASPET Annual Meeting. These awards aim to highlight exceptional scientific work among young scientists. Participants must be ASPET members and present their research if selected. Prizes include cash awards, with amounts varying by category. This competition encourages students conducting pharmacology-related research to showcase their findings, fostering professional development in the scientific community.

The ASPET Poster Awards for undergraduates recognize exceptional scientific presentations at the ASPET Annual Meeting. This competition showcases the best research from young scientists, including undergraduates, graduates, and postdoctoral fellows. Awards are presented by ASPET divisions and the Mentoring and Career Development committee, with cash prizes varying by category. Eligible applicants must be ASPET members and present their research in poster format. This initiative encourages participation in pharmacology-related research.

The Wagner Catholic Scholarship, offered by the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area, supports graduating seniors from local Catholic parishes who are pursuing higher education. Eligible applicants must demonstrate financial need and faith commitment through a personal essay. The scholarship is renewable for up to three years, with a decreasing award amount after the first year. This initiative aims to empower students to further their education while fostering community values.

All Holland/Zeeland area individuals interested in post-secondary education are encouraged to apply for CFHZ scholarships.

The Foundation proudly administers over 100 scholarships, each with unique eligibility criteria that must be met before a candidate can be considered.

Van’t Hof Scholarship

• Graduating senior from one of the following high schools: Black River, Holland Christian, Holland High School, West Ottawa, Zeeland East, or Zeeland West
• Enrolling at Hope College or Calvin University
• Financial need (must submit the page of the FAFSA Submission Summary showing the Student Aid Index amount)
• Potentially renewable for three additional years

The Don Rossi Scholarship, established by the National Golf Course Owners’ Association in 1993, supports college juniors and seniors majoring in Sports Administration or related fields. This scholarship aims to foster careers in golf-related industries, encouraging students nationwide to pursue their aspirations. Funded by the Coastal Community Foundation, it reflects a commitment to education and community growth, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder talented individuals from achieving their goals.

The ASPET Travel Awards aim to support the professional development of young scientists attending the ASPET Annual Meeting. Eligible participants include undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers who are ASPET members. Awards cover registration and lodging, with additional funding available for international applicants from developing countries. This program fosters networking and learning among emerging pharmacologists, enhancing their contributions to the scientific community.

Who We Are

Founded in 1996, the Community Foundation of South Georgia is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to making South Georgia a better place to live through effective philanthropy. We help individuals, families, nonprofit organizations and businesses establish and manage charitable funds that carry out their philanthropic interests. Serving a geographic area of 35 counties in South Georgia, we facilitate our donors’ charitable plans and goals by creating custom designed funds that meet their specific interests and ensure solid financial management and administration for each fund. 

Alan George Memorial YMCA Scholarship

For a graduating senior from a high school located in Thomas County, Georgia who has attained at least a 3.0 GPA in high school and is affiliated with the Thomasville YMCA in some capacity such as a member or employee or whose parents are affiliated with the Thomasville YMCA. The award is based on financial need, academic achievement, extracurricular school activities or employment, community service, and leadership qualities.

• Enrolling at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

The Dr. Carolyn Baum Cognitive Function in Daily Life Mentor Award, funded by the American Occupational Therapy Foundation, supports mid-to senior-level occupational therapy researchers mentoring assistant professors or post-doctoral fellows. This $10,000 stipend aims to enhance understanding of cognition's role in daily life through research. Dr. Carolyn Baum, a pioneer in the field, inspires this initiative, promoting the advancement of functional cognition in occupational therapy.

The NCAA Walter Byers Graduate Scholarship is awarded annually to one male and one female student-athlete, recognizing outstanding academic achievement and potential for success in graduate study. Each scholarship provides $24,000 for one academic year, with the possibility of renewal. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 3.500, compete in NCAA athletics, and demonstrate strong character and leadership. The scholarship aims to support future leaders in their chosen fields, fostering excellence in academics and community engagement.

Ted Vanden Bosch Scholarship for the Children of Police Officers, Firefighters, and Rescue Personnel

• Graduating senior or graduating early college student who attends public, private, or home school in the primary service area of the Community Foundation or in Fennville, Hamilton, or Saugatuck
• Enrolling at an accredited post-secondary school within the United States
• Financial need (must submit the page of the FAFSA Submission Summary showing the Student Aid Index amount)
• GPA of 3.0 or greater
• Child of a firefighter, police officer, or rescue personnel
• Special consideration given to candidates interested in pursuing a degree in the sciences

The Marion L. Bates Endowment Fund for Faculty Enrichment supports educators in Rockford Public School District #205 to enhance their professional growth. Established in memory of devoted teacher Marion L. Bates, the fund provides grants for enriching activities that foster intellectual development. Eligible applicants must have at least three years of service in the district, and funding can be used for diverse educational pursuits, excluding routine teaching expenses or equipment.
