The Community Foundation of Wabash County offers a wide variety of post-secondary education scholarships to traditional, non-traditional, and graduate students. With nearly 70 different scholarship endowments created through the generosity of our donors, many students are eligible to apply.    

Roy B. Craver Scholarship Endowment

Roy B. Craver was a veteran of World War I. He established a scholarship for residents of Wabash County and graduates of a Wabash County high school who like himself are willing to serve in the armed forces even if they do not intend to enlist.

The Austin E. Knowlton Foundation Grant, established in 1981, provides financial support to students pursuing higher education in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. With a focus on STEM fields, the Foundation aims to promote academic excellence through direct grants to qualified colleges and universities. Since its inception, it has awarded millions in scholarships, making a significant impact on the educational landscape. The Foundation invites suggestions for expanding its reach and enhancing its contributions to higher education.

With support from Toyota Motor North America, the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) is pleased to announce $250,000 in grant funding to make public lands more accessible and enjoyable for people of all abilities. The 2026 grant program will focus on communities near Toyota Motor North America facilities and is restricted to 16 communities, as detailed below. 

Overview

Through the 2026 Driving Mobility and Accessibility on Public Lands grant, NEEF aims to:

• Increase the capacity of local organizations and government agencies to address mobility and accessibility considerations on public lands; and
• Improve the level of access, comfort, and enjoyment experienced by public lands visitors of all abilities, together with their families and friends.

The grant will provide up to $20,000 per grantee to increase physical or digital access, provide adaptive recreation equipment or programming, or perform accessibility assessments on public lands in communities near 16 Toyota Motor North America facilities.

The Samerian Foundation is the philanthropic vehicle of the Skjodt’s generosity. To date, they have granted 2,105 requests of nearly $93.4 million.

The Samerian Foundation is lovingly named after Cindy and Paul’s children, Samantha, Erik, and Ian, who serve on the board.

Erik M. Skjodt Scholarship

This scholarship is for students who wish to pursue a degree in business at Indiana University. Applicants must be a current high school senior who will be attending the Kelley School of Business at any Indiana University campus.

Samantha B. Skjodt Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Simon- Skjodt family to inform and inspire individuals about the past and future contributions of women in STEM.

This scholarship is for women who wish to pursue a degree in technology at Indiana University.

The Ackerman Foundation, established in 1992, aims to enhance the vitality of central Indiana by supporting organizations that promote self-sufficiency for the underprivileged and initiatives that improve educational outcomes. They provide grants exclusively to 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations, typically limiting support to one grant per year per agency. The foundation does not fund individuals and focuses on sustaining local cultural and health institutions to enrich community life.

The Patterson Foundation offers Assistance Dog Program Grants to support organizations providing service animals to veterans and individuals with disabilities. Funding is available for projects that expand capacity, personnel costs related to puppy training, and program support aimed at improving client experiences. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) non-profits and can request grants up to $35,000 for capital projects or $10,000 for program support. Applications are accepted through a two-step process.

The Franco Family Institute offers the Publication Subvention Grant to support faculty in publishing scholarly monographs. This grant assists with publication costs, including professional indexing and image permissions. Applications are competitive and require a publisher's contract. Subventions are typically under $3,000, and funds must be returned if the book is not published. This grant prioritizes assistant and associate professors while excluding advisory and emeritus faculty.

The Tom F. Bunge Charitable Trust Grant supports organizations that assist homeless individuals, reflecting the legacy of its founder, Tom F. Bunge. Established in St. Joseph County, Indiana, the trust awards approximately 10 grants annually, with a preference for local organizations. To be eligible, applicants must be 501(c)(3) exempt organizations. The trust aims to address homelessness without geographical restrictions, although it focuses on Indiana and Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Dorothy J. and William A. Rice Memorial Scholarship Endowment

Established by Gary A. Rice and Randall W. Rice to memorialize their parents, Dorothy and William, who were devoted members of Christ United Methodist Church in Wabash, Indiana. The endowment provides funds to Christ United Methodist Church to be used to award tuition only scholarship grants to members of the church.

The Honda USA Foundation's Mobility Pillar Award aims to empower individuals with disabilities by funding programs that enhance access and mobility. The foundation supports nonprofit organizations and schools that provide therapeutic, adaptive, and comprehensive care programs, as well as mobility modifications and assistive technology. Applications are accepted from U.S.-based organizations with 501(c)(3) status or fiscal sponsors, ensuring that the joy of mobility is accessible to all.

The External Collaborative Research Grants by Boehringer Ingelheim support academic and clinical scientists in proposing research studies. These grants facilitate collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim, which may provide intellectual and financial support. Applicants must assume full responsibility for their research while complying with regulatory standards. The funding should cover research costs, excluding salary support for the collaborative partner. Interested investigators must apply online for consideration.

The Food and Agricultural Sciences National Needs Graduate and Postgraduate Fellowships program, managed by the USDA's NIFA, aims to enhance the training of new graduate students in food and agricultural sciences. The NCR-SARE Graduate Student Grant Program funds up to $20,000 for graduate student projects addressing sustainable agriculture in the North Central Region. Established in 2002, it supports Master's and Ph.D. students at accredited institutions. Projects can last up to 36 months, and applicants may receive only one grant during their academic career. The program aims to promote innovative solutions to agricultural challenges and enhance sustainability practices in the region.

The Asian Cultural Council's Graduate Fellowship provides financial support for travel and living expenses to graduate students from Asia studying in the U.S. It offers $15,000 for one academic year, potentially renewable for another year, covering essential costs while pursuing full-time coursework. The NIDCD is offering funding to advance HIV/AIDS research, particularly focusing on areas related to communication disorders. Gerstbrein/McCanna Scholarship for the Arts

After a long and rewarding career in Landscape Design and Art Education, Lisa Gerstbrein/McCanna wanted to promote the Arts and Industrial Arts in the community where she made her home and her livelihood. Her career brought her tremendous joy in pursuits that she loved as well as the satisfying reward of helping students find inspiration in the worlds of Art and Industrial Art. She is a true believer in the concept of STEAM based education. Accordingly, she established a fund to provide scholarships for the advanced education of advancing Senior High School Students in these areas who are residents of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania and are pursuing higher education in an approved program within 300 miles of their respective school - Armstrong High School, West Shamokin High School or Lenape Technical School.

The foundation prioritizes initiatives that dismantle systemic racism and foster inclusive opportunities, ensuring all community members can thrive. Eligible applicants can submit pre-applications year-round for potential funding.

The Decatur County Community Foundation Scholarship offers financial assistance to students attending any public or private college in Indiana. Funded by the Decatur County Community Foundation, this scholarship awards four scholarships of up to $5,000 each to finalists who do not receive the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. This initiative aims to ease the financial burden of education and inspire community generosity.

The DCCF Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship offers a remarkable opportunity for one Decatur County student, covering full tuition and fees for a four-year degree at any accredited Indiana college or university. Additionally, the recipient receives a $900 annual stipend for books and equipment. This scholarship is administered by Independent Colleges of Indiana, ensuring a fair nomination process through the Decatur County Community Foundation, which aims to foster educational success and community development.
