For more than 40 years, the Hispanic Development Fund Scholarship Program has encouraged Hispanic/Latinx youth to attend college and accomplish their personal goals by awarding more than 6,539 scholarships totaling over $10 million to Kansas City-area students.

Our History

Since its founding, The H & R Block Foundation has been committed to assisting underserved individuals and improving the quality of all aspects of life. The Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that increase access to the arts, build stable neighborhoods, offer diverse learning opportunities, and expand access to services that respond to all individuals’ physical and emotional needs. The Foundation continues to support the H&R Block culture by aligning resources and leadership to create positive social change.

Community Impact

The H & R Block Foundation awards grants that help nonprofits improve or strengthen services, enhance operations, and achieve greater results. The Foundation’s grant strategy focuses on the following:

• Helping underserved individuals pursue and attain post-secondary education
• Improving the quality of life throughout neighborhoods in greater Kansas City
• Enhancing nonprofits’ operational efficiency and service delivery and strengthening major community assets and institutions

Since its inception, The H & R Block Foundation has invested over $84 million in various charitable organizations.

Grants FAQ

The Foundation’s areas of focus are:

• Neighborhood Revitalization

There are no fixed minimum or maximum amounts, though most grants do not exceed $150,000.  

The Foundation’s sister organization, the Marion and Henry Bloch Family Foundation makes single-year and multiyear grants that typically fall in the range of $150,000 to $500,000. Grants may be funded by either Foundation, as determined by Foundation staff.

HUD Continuum of Care Grant

Overview

Each year, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers a national competitive funding opportunity to Continuums of Care (CoCs) working to end homelessness. On June 1st, 2026, HUD released the fiscal year 2026 Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), see NOFO and CoC Program Competition

UCS serves as Johnson County’s CoC (KS-505) lead agency and collaborative applicant and submits the application annually on behalf of local members. In fiscal year 2024, $1,061,657 was awarded to members of KS-505’s CoC to support 7 programs in Johnson County offering permanent supportive housing, rapid rehousing, homeless data management services and CoC planning support.

The CoC Program (24 CFR part 578):

• Promotes community-wide commitment to ending homelessness
• Provides funding for nonprofit providers, states, and local governments to quickly re-house homeless individuals, youth, families, and persons fleeing domestic/dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking
• Promotes access to and effective utilization of mainstream programs
• Optimizes self-sufficiency among those experiencing homelessness

Evergy is committed to empowering a better future for the communities we serve. Through our Community Impact Program, we support nonprofit organizations working to improve environmental sustainability, community vitality and social equity.

Evergy’s Hometown Grant Program 

Awarded annually, this grant program provides up to $10,000 for basic needs initiatives. 

Projects must be basic needs focused for food security, housing, hygiene and bill payments. Health focused projects are not eligible. Projects should be for expanding capacity or special projects that are outside of normal operations.
