Best STEM Education Grants in Louisiana

Middle schools and other eligible public, private, and charter schools in Louisiana can receive US $9,100 in in-kind support to launch the PLTW Gateway STEM program for the first time. Grants from Project Lead The Way help cover PLTW Gateway participation fees and six core teacher training registrations, with national eligibility across all U.S. states and territories.

K–12 schools in Louisiana can receive funding for curriculum-based service learning projects that connect classroom STEM education to real community needs. The Joe W & Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation, working with STEM Library Lab, supports projects that follow NYLC service learning standards and may cover transportation, project materials, snacks, and nonprofit partner fees.

Public, private, and charter schools adding a new PLTW Biomedical Science program can receive up to US $14,000 to cover participation and teacher training costs, including in Louisiana. Project Lead The Way provides three-year support for schools offering PLTW Biomedical Science courses from 2026–2029, with PLTW covering specified fees in the first two years.

K–12 schools, colleges, and nonprofits in Louisiana and Mississippi can apply for the Brown Foundation’s SupportSTEM grants, with awards up to Up to US $30,000 for curriculum implementation and STEM instruction support. Funding can cover professional development, STEM kits, equipment, materials, conferences, transportation, and ongoing STEM programs that enrich K–12 education.

Louisiana EPSCoR 

Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR)

As early as FY 1988-89, the Board was co-sponsoring research projects with the National Science Foundation (NSF) and supporting the development of Louisiana’s scientific research and educational infrastructure under NSF’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). The Board’s involvement in EPSCoR has grown over the years to include programs with NASA, the Department of Energy (DOE), the Department of Defense (DoD), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

LAMDA Seed Funding

The Louisiana Materials Design Alliance (LAMDA), an NSF EPSCoR RII Track-1 project, solicits proposals for LAMDA Supplemental Funding: Research Equipment Acquisition for Competitive Transformation (REACT) to support STEM research projects designed to build and strengthen the fundamental research capacity and competitiveness of Louisiana’s universities. This is a onetime supplemental funding program directed toward researchers who are at the threshold of becoming competitive on a consistent basis in the Federal and other external R&D marketplaces, or those seeking to maintain competitive status, and who—with some assistance from the supplemental funding to implement their plans to overcome whatever barriers they have identified which have stood in their way—clearly have a strong potential for enhancing their competitive status within a limited time span.

Awards are intended to partially fund purchases of small research equipment. Awards will be funded at a maximum of $20,000, and institutions must provide a minimum 20% cost match in cash. An institutional letter of commitment regarding the cash match is required.

Public charities and government units in Louisiana working on STEM and broader education initiatives can seek funding to enhance learning and community quality of life. Vulcan Materials Company Foundation supports K–12 and higher education, especially math, science, and engineering programs, as well as environmental stewardship and projects involving active Vulcan employee involvement in its operating communities.

Louisiana STEM and education-focused 501(c)(3) nonprofits can access funding through Union Pacific Foundation’s Community Ties Local Grants to support youth STEM pathways, workforce readiness, and related programming. Eligible projects must primarily serve Louisiana communities on the Union Pacific service list and align with priorities like workforce development, youth development, or environmental education, with awards ranging from US $5,000 - US $30,000.

The Board of Regents/SREB Doctoral Support Initiative aims to enhance the recruitment and retention of doctoral students poised to enter academia. Established by the Louisiana Board of Regents, this program allocates up to ten support slots annually to graduate schools. Each slot offers financial aid, membership in the SREB Doctoral Scholars Program, and opportunities for professional development at the annual Institute on Teaching and Mentoring, fostering a robust pipeline of future educators.

About the Louisiana Board of Regents

The Board of Regents, a state agency created by the 1974 Louisiana Constitution, coordinates all public higher education in Louisiana. The Board began operations on January 1, 1975, succeeding the Coordinating Council for Higher Education per Article VIII, Section 5; Article VII, Section 10.1. Regents is the coordinating board for higher education while the system boards handle the day-to-day management of campuses. Through Education, Innovation, and Collaboration, Regents oversees the Master Plan, including Funding Formula, Merger and Transfer of Institutions, Capital Outlay, Approval and Elimination of Programs & Departments, and Regents Support Fund Allocations.

Research Competitiveness Subprogram (RCS)

RCS funds projects that strengthen the fundamental research base and competitiveness of Louisiana’s public and private universities. The subprogram is a stimulus opportunity available to researchers who are currently not competitive for federal support but show strong potential for achieving national research competitiveness in an area funded by the federal government within a limited span of time. Research funded through RCS must make fundamental contributions to knowledge in eligible scientific and engineering disciplines rather than simply seek to apply existing knowledge.

RCS also includes a one-year award to assist faculty who may already be competitive through short-term pilot awards to conduct novel scientific and engineering research leading to near-term federal support.

The Industrial Ties Research Subprogram (ITRS) with Proof-of-Concept/Prototyping Initiative, managed by the Louisiana Board of Regents, aims to bolster the state's economy by supporting research with strong private or federal funding links. This initiative facilitates technology transfer and commercialization of innovative ideas, aligning research projects with the growth of new or existing Louisiana businesses. By fostering collaboration between academia and industry, ITRS plays a crucial role in advancing economic development in Louisiana.

The Louisiana Board of Regents offers the Departmental Enhancement program to improve educational and research capacities in academic and agricultural departments. This competitive initiative supports both comprehensive and targeted projects, encouraging diverse activities from equipment purchases to curricular redesign. Open to all eligible departments, this program aims to bolster workforce activities and enhance the overall infrastructure within Louisiana's higher education system, fostering innovation and collaboration across disciplines.

Grayce Wills MacDonald and Ivan A. MacDonald Endowment

Shall support students who attended high school in Cherokee, Graham, Clay, Swain, Macon, Jackson, Haywood, Buncombe, and Henderson counties, and who are pursuing a college or post-graduate level degree in the field of nutrition with emphasis on the study of natural foods and the vegetarian lifestyle. Scholarships may be based on both need and merit.

The Fred and Betty Worsh Scholarship Fund, managed by the North Carolina Community Foundation, offers financial support to residents of New Hanover and Brunswick Counties who are U.S. citizens attending accredited four-year colleges or universities. Scholarships are available to undergraduates, graduates, and adult re-entry students, and may be renewed annually based on academic performance and financial need. Applications open on December 16, 2025, and close on March 3, 2026.

Lawrence & Phyllis DeWolfe Scholarship

Established by the family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence DeWolfe to provide college scholarships to graduating seniors from Blue Ridge, Lackawanna Trail, and Mountain View school districts who will major in agriculture, education, a STEM field or law enforcement.

The Chevron Changing the Face of Golf Scholarship, awarded by the LPGA Foundation, aims to empower female high school seniors from minority backgrounds pursuing STEM studies. Established in 2022, this scholarship promotes diversity in golf and education, honoring Dinah Shore's legacy. By supporting young women, the LPGA Foundation continues its mission to change the face of golf and provide educational opportunities, enhancing representation in both golf and STEM fields.

The Carteret County Retired School Personnel Scholarship Endowment offers scholarships to graduating seniors from Carteret County public high schools with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Eligible students must apply for admission to an accredited college or university and plan to pursue a degree in education, demonstrating their commitment to serving as positive role models. Applications open on Dec. 16, 2025, and close on March 3, 2026.

The Carteret County Association of Home Builders Murdoch Scholarship offers financial assistance to graduating seniors and graduates from Carteret County high schools. Eligible students must be enrolled full-time in accredited technical schools or universities pursuing degrees in construction-related fields. Priority is given to those with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and demonstrated financial need. Applications open on December 16, 2025, and close on March 3, 2026, making it essential for interested candidates to prepare their submissions accordingly.

Female graduates of a Brunswick County, NC, high school who plan to attend or currently attend a qualified institution of higher learning, including a college, university or community college, to pursue a degree in one of the STEM disciplines (Science, Engineering, Technology, or Math).

Since 1997, the Community Scholarship Program has awarded $59.5 million to more than 15,400 students, making our program the largest non-university scholarship provider in San Diego County. By offering financial assistance, the program helps students dedicate more time to their studies, stay enrolled and complete their degrees.

The SD2 Scholarship

The SD2 Scholarship applicants should:

• Be graduating high school seniors or current community college students
• Plan to enroll or transfer to an accredited four-year university in the US in fall
• Have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (with rare exceptions for extenuating circumstances)
• Plan to major in science, technology, engineering or mathematics
• Demonstrate an interest in the advancement of historically underrepresented populations in the sciences and related fields
• Students from underserved and underrepresented backgrounds are highly encouraged to apply
• Have a demonstrated financial need
• Open to those applicants above with a focus on reducing historical educational disparities for those furthest from opportunity

The Pittsburgh Foundation provides scholarship opportunities for students to pursue their educational goals. Scholarships are available for graduating high school seniors, undergraduates, graduate, medical and professional school students who are attending community colleges, four–year universities, graduate schools, and career/technical schools.

Pittsburgh ERG Scholarship Fund

The Pittsburgh ERG Scholarship formed by employees of Microsoft delivers on the mission of Microsoft’s local employee resource group to support diversity and inclusion. This scholarship enables high school students with disabilities and/or financial needs to go to college and pursue a career in technology. In addition, we hope to contribute to increasing the pool of people living with a disability enrolling in higher education and, in the long term, decrease the unemployment bias for this demographic. This scholarship will be awarded to promising high school seniors living in the city of Pittsburgh who plan to attend a vocational or academic college and have a financial need. The amount of this multi-year renewable scholarship is $12,000 payable over four years ($3,000 per year). (Immediate family members of Microsoft employees are not eligible for this scholarship.)

• Average Award: $12,000 over 4 years.
• Award Type: Multi-Year (up to 4 years). Recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and enrollment in the stated major.

The Pittsburgh Foundation provides scholarship opportunities for students to pursue their educational goals. Scholarships are available for graduating high school seniors, undergraduates, graduate, medical and professional school students who are attending community colleges, four–year universities, graduate schools, and career/technical schools.

Kennametal Scholarship Fund

The Kennametal Scholarship Fund was created at The Pittsburgh Foundation to support students in Southwestern Pennsylvania with financial need pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related degrees. The purpose of the scholarship is to broaden the awareness of opportunities in STEM by supporting students who have been disproportionately affected by systemic barriers to educational achievement.

Better World Scholarship Fund

The scholarship encourages women to acquire a degree in a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) field. The donor’s bachelor’s degree is in mathematics, followed 15 years later with a master’s degree in business administration. Her degree in mathematics provided opportunities for jobs in software development and application, medical research, technical documentation, organizational education and training, scientific research, and business. Her career was challenging, dynamic, encouraged creativity, never boring, offered schedule flexibility that allowed her to parent her four children, provided career choice independence, and was lucrative. Go STEM Girls!

This FOA is intended for proposals related to basic and applied research in the STEM categories, and not related to the development of a specific system or hardware procurement.The proposal submission process has two stages:I. Applicants are encouraged to submit a white paper first to Grants@NPS.edu, ; andII. Applicants must submit a full proposal through Grants.gov (do not submit white papers through Grants.gov, only full proposals)Applicants are encouraged to submit a White Paper in advance of a Full Proposal to minimize the labor and other costs associated with the production of detailed full proposals that have little chance of being selected for funding. Based on an assessment of the white papers, the responsible Research Program Officer will provide informal feedback notification to the prospective awardees to encourage or discourage submission proposals. The Research Program Officer may also, on occasion, provide feedback encouraging re-work to strengthen a proposal. White Papers may be submitted at any time during the open period of this FOA. A separate White Paper is required for each research proposal.

EPSCoR RII Research Fellows Limited Competition

EPSCoR RII: EPSCoR Research Fellows directly aligns with the NSF EPSCoR strategic goal of establishing sustainable Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) professional development pathways that advance workforce development and effects engagement in STEM at national and global levels. EPSCoR RII: EPSCoR Research Fellows provides awards to build research capacity in institutions and transform the career trajectories of investigators and further develop their individual research potential through collaborations with investigators from the nation's premier private, governmental, or academic research institutions and/or centers. The fellowship provides opportunities to establish strong collaborations through extended or periodic collaborative visits to a selected host site. Through collaborative research activities with the host site, Fellows will be able to learn new techniques, develop new collaborations, advance existing partnerships, benefit from access to unique equipment and facilities, and/or shift their research toward potentially transformative new directions. The experiences gained through the fellowships are intended to have lasting impacts that will enhance the Fellows' research trajectories well beyond the award period. The benefits to the Fellows are also expected to improve the research capacity of their institutions and jurisdictions more broadly.
