About Us
In 1971 the Legislature established the Maine Historic Preservation Commission to implement State policy to "preserve the architectural, historic and environmental heritage of the people of the State, and to develop and promote the cultural, educational and economic benefits of these resources." The Commission is an independent agency within the Executive branch of state government that functions as the State Historic Preservation Office.
Its Director serves as the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) upon appointment by the Governor. The office administers the programs of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 in Maine, which includes the identification, evaluation, and protection of the state’s significant cultural resources.
Grants
The Commission offers several grants and assists with administering several others on behalf of the National Park Service.
New Century Community Grants
As state program funds are available, the Commission makes matching grants to eligible non-profit and community based organizations for the restoration or preservation of historic properties listed in the Register.

Historic Community Buildings Grant Program
In the November 2024 general election, Maine voters approved a $10,000,000 bond issue to restore historic buildings owned by governmental and nonprofit organizations. The bond requires a 25% matching share from either private or nonprofit sources, and the program is administered by the Maine Historic Preservation Commission (Commission).
Eligible buildings are those Historic Community Buildings that have been listed in the Register or that have been nominated for listing in the Register by the Commission. They must be open to the general public and support the social, educational, or cultural life of Maine people. MEMA also provides guidance, and assistance to county and local governments, businesses and nonprofit organizations in their efforts to provide protection to citizen and property, and increase resiliency in the face of disaster. The Agency uses strategies such as planning, training, exercise and public education to carry out its mission.
Since 2001, MEMA has been the focal point for the implementation of programs regarding Homeland Security, integrating these concerns into its all-hazard mission.

Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry
Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) is Maine's support center for many land-based natural resource interests, including farms and forestry-related businesses, outdoor recreation, and public access to parks and public lands.
We strive to provide excellent customer service, and we facilitate a team approach to land-use planning, conservation efforts, business support, and economic activity. Our agency has a wide range of duties, from promoting and advancing Maine's agricultural resources; protecting and enhancing our vast forestland, which comprises 89% of our state's land base; managing more than 700,000 acres of state parks and public lands; and administering numerous science-based programs focused on resource management, wise land use planning, and conservation, while strengthening the base of scientific research and information for effective decision-making.
PFAS Fund Targeted Grants
Maine Governor Janet Mills created the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) Fund in 2022 to support farmers whose land and/or water are contaminated with PFAS. The PFAS Fund is a first-in-the-country coordinated effort to specifically address PFAS in agriculture and is governed by 7 M.R.S.A. c. 10-D. One goal of the PFAS Fund is to fund research that allows farmers to make informed decisions about how to adjust their operations in light of PFAS contamination. Additional goals of the PFAS Fund include direct financial support for affected farmers, the purchase and management of PFAS-contaminated agricultural land, and mental and physical health-related initiatives.
The DACF PFAS Fund is part of the more extensive, integrated, multi-agency investigation of and response to PFAS throughout Maine. DACF’s primary focus is safeguarding human health and ensuring the viability of farms.

About
The National Sea Grant College Program was established by the U.S. Congress in 1966 and works to create and maintain a healthy coastal environment and economy. The Sea Grant network consists of a federal/university partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and 34 programs in every coastal and Great Lakes state, Puerto Rico, and Guam.
The Northeast Sea Grant Consortium is a regional collaboration that includes 8 Sea Grant programs in 7 Northeast states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
The Northeast Sea Grant Consortium collaborates on regional initiatives in research, education, extension, and communications—leveraging local expertise to create regional benefits and accomplishments.
American Lobster Initiative (ALI) Collaborative Research
The Sea Grant American Lobster Initiative is pleased to announce funding to support new collaborative research projects that closely align with emerging lobster industry and management needs. This request for proposals (RFP) adds to the substantial breadth of previous ALI-funded research by prioritizing projects that create “actionable science” (outputs and findings of the scientific process are useful to and usable by end-user communities) through the co-creation of information and/or products.
To reach this goal, the ALI seeks to support collaborative research practices, the sharing of knowledge, expertise, and resources/capacities amongst the many people who comprise the American lobster industry. Projects must be developed and led by collaborative research teams that include at least one fishing industry representative, such as a commercial fisherman or a representative from a commercial fishing business, including cooperatives, dealers and processors. This call emphasizes research conducted with and for the industry, offering an exciting opportunity to support and elevate industry-research-management partnerships to address current ecological, regulatory, and socio-economic challenges faced by the American lobster fishery.
The Sea Grant American Lobster Initiative invites proposals for collaborative research projects to be funded from December 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028. Projects can be up to two years in duration, with a recommended duration of no less than 18 months.
This opportunity is designed to support collaborative research conducted by those affiliated with the American lobster industry (including shoreside supply chain businesses), and any public or private higher education institution, municipal, state, federal, or tribal entity, research laboratory, or other community or non-profit institution. This opportunity is not open to single investigator proposals.
A total of $400,000 is available to support up to 8 two-year project awards. Project budgets cannot exceed $100,000 (including all direct and indirect costs), and must include non-federal cost share is required for this competition. See full RFP for guidance.
