The Community Foundation builds trust through relationship, integrity, and by providing safe places for donors to give their resources.

We are a nonprofit, public charity serving the people of Shasta, Siskiyou and Tehama counties, with a mission to impact the region through the power of giving.

Scholarships

The Community Foundation of the North State manages many scholarship funds that are awarded to graduating high school seniors as well as students already in an undergraduate program. Some scholarships were started by families or individuals; others by businesses or organizations. All scholarships share one important focus: helping young people reach their educational goals.

Matt Solus Memorial Scholarship Fund

The scholarship supports high school or College of the Siskiyous students in Siskiyou County pursuing careers in fire science or law enforcement.

Matt Solus Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Matt Solus, the son of Fred & Elouise Solus of Yreka. Matt was a victim of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Although Matt was on a heart transplant list, he succumbed to the disease at the age of 22. Matt was a 1997 graduate of Yreka High School. The Solus Family were pioneers in Siskiyou County, having first moved there in 1850. Matt was a member of the Explorer Program with the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department and had a strong interest in law enforcement and fire science. The scholarship supports students in Siskiyou County pursuing careers in fire science or law enforcement.

The Southwest Airlines® Founders Scholarship, administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation, offers financial support to dependents of Southwest Airlines employees pursuing their first post-secondary degree. Established in 1981, this renewable scholarship awards up to $20,000 over four years, contingent on meeting GPA and enrollment criteria. Eligible applicants must demonstrate community service and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5. This scholarship underscores the commitment to empowering educated communities.

The NCCIH Natural Product Mid Phase Clinical Trial (R01 Clinical Trial Required) invites applications for mid-phase clinical trials involving natural products like botanicals and dietary supplements. The goal is to advance clinical testing through robust preliminary data, ensuring these products demonstrate measurable impacts on target engagement. Submission deadlines span from March 2024 to October 2026. Applications must focus on optimizing doses and identifying patient responders to inform future efficacy trials, aligning with NCCIH's research priorities.

The NCCIH Natural Product Early Phase Clinical Trial Award (R33 Clinical Trial Required) promotes innovative clinical trials on natural products, such as botanicals and dietary supplements. This funding opportunity supports studies that demonstrate significant scientific rationale and preliminary evidence for efficacy. Applications can explore various delivery methods and combinations with existing treatments to enhance outcomes. Funding is available for up to three years, aimed at bridging basic science discoveries into practical clinical applications.

The NCCIH Natural Product Early Phase Clinical Trial Phased Innovation Award supports investigator-initiated clinical trials of natural products, including botanicals and dietary supplements. This funding opportunity aims to validate the pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of these products over three years in a phased approach. Successful trials will provide crucial data for further development and clinical application, emphasizing the importance of scientifically driven research in natural product efficacy.

The Home Depot Foundation's Veteran Housing Grants Program aims to enhance the lives of U.S. veterans by funding the construction or rehabilitation of supportive housing. Grants, ranging from $100,000 to $500,000, are awarded to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations with experience in veteran housing. Since 2011, the Foundation has committed over $550 million to veteran causes and seeks to invest an additional $750 million by 2030, focusing on projects in major cities across the U.S.

The St. Patrick's and St. Anthony's Church Scholarship, provided by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation, aims to support high school seniors from Northern Ottawa County. This scholarship emphasizes academic achievement, financial need, and personal goals. Applicants must demonstrate their connection to the church and submit a transcript along with other required documents. This initiative reflects the foundation's commitment to fostering educational opportunities within the community.

The Mina Powell Scholarship, offered by the Ashland County Community Foundation, supports graduating seniors from any high school who are members of Zion Lutheran Church in Loudonville. This scholarship aims to assist students who have been accepted into accredited two or four-year colleges or universities, providing them with the financial resources needed to pursue their higher education goals.

The Blackstock Family Foundation Scholarship Fund, established by the Community Foundation of Central Georgia, offers scholarships to Georgia students pursuing degrees in healthcare, special education, or STEM fields. With a focus on supporting individuals with special needs, the fund provides at least one award annually, with renewal options for prior recipients. Eligible candidates must be Georgia residents, high school seniors or currently enrolled students, and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.7. Preference is given to students from Upson County.

The Carteret County Association of Home Builders Murdoch Scholarship offers financial assistance to graduating seniors and graduates from Carteret County high schools. Eligible students must be enrolled full-time in accredited technical schools or universities pursuing degrees in construction-related fields. Priority is given to those with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and demonstrated financial need. Applications open on December 16, 2025, and close on March 3, 2026, making it essential for interested candidates to prepare their submissions accordingly.

William D. and H. Marie Betrus Smith Scholarship for Theatrical Arts

The purpose of the scholarship is to enhance the performance quality and technical aspects of theater arts for Monroe County residents. Many actors train at length in special programs, conservatories, universities, or colleges to develop their skills. To promote the highest level of accomplishment, the scholarship will fund the mastery of textual interpretation, voice, and movement. Technical awards are considered when portfolios are submitted with applications.

All ages should consider applying, from 7 to 70. If you have been in a show this season, your audition may be waived. Technical awards are considered, so if you have been active backstage, consider applying as well. Note your production role and the approximate number of hours worked to be considered for an audition waiver as well.

The Carteret County Retired School Personnel Scholarship Endowment offers scholarships to graduating seniors from Carteret County public high schools with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Eligible students must apply for admission to an accredited college or university and plan to pursue a degree in education, demonstrating their commitment to serving as positive role models. Applications open on Dec. 16, 2025, and close on March 3, 2026.

The William R. Steers Kalamazoo Community Foundation Scholarship supports high school seniors from Kalamazoo County, Michigan, who plan to attend Albion College full-time. To qualify, applicants must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, demonstrate financial need, and be residents of the area or graduates of its high schools. This renewable scholarship not only aids in educational expenses but also honors the legacy of William R. Steers, promoting academic success and community involvement.

Scholarships are offered to students living in the Richmond region and other Virginia locations. Each scholarship was established by a generous individual, family, or organization with a desire to assist high school students, recent high school graduates, and adult learners to continue their education. 

Claude V. Simmons Scholarship

The Claude V. Simmons Scholarship Fund was established to support post-secondary educational opportunities for qualifying members of the Church of Francis de Sales in Mathews County, Virginia.

The Montague Myers Scholarship, established by the Kalamazoo Community Foundation in 1996, supports students from Kalamazoo County who have faced significant hardships in childhood. This multiyear scholarship aids high school seniors, undergraduates, and graduates in pursuing various educational paths. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and may use the funds for tuition, housing, and other essential costs. The scholarship is renewable annually for up to four years, fostering equitable access to education in the community.

The Pediatric Lupus Research Grant aims to provide pilot funding for innovative research initiatives focusing on pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It supports various projects, including feasibility studies and the development of new methodologies or technologies. With a total funding of up to $90,000 for two projects over one year, this grant encourages collaborations and aims to significantly improve the lives of children affected by lupus in the U.S. and Canada.

The Jon Christopher Gauss, Jr. Wrestling Scholarship Fund, established by his parents, supports high school wrestlers pursuing post-secondary education at accredited institutions. This initiative, part of the Community Foundation of Washington County MD, aims to honor Jon's legacy while empowering students to achieve their educational goals. The scholarship enhances community engagement and provides vital financial assistance to promising athletes, ensuring that their dedication to wrestling translates into academic success.

The Myra P. Whalen Scholarship, offered by the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, provides renewable support to graduate students from Kalamazoo County or its high schools pursuing full-time graduate degrees in various fields. This scholarship emphasizes financial need and can cover tuition, fees, housing, and other educational expenses. It honors Myra P. Whalen's legacy while empowering students to achieve their academic and professional goals through sustained financial assistance.

Buesching-Tucker Memorial Scholarship

This Scholarship is available to any Whitley County resident. Applicants may be current students, non-traditional students, home-school students, and traditional graduating high school seniors with aspirations for a nursing career or obtaining a degree in music.

In loving memory of our amazing mother, sister, aunt, and “Gummi”, and our dear father, uncle, brother, and “Baba” we establish this scholarship to honor Nancy Buesching Tucker and Robert Lewis Tucker residents of rural Churubusco. Our family invites you to apply hoping that in some small way we can aid you in becoming as gifted a nurse as Nancy was or as entertaining a musician as Bob was.

The Allen Family Career Advancement Grant (AFCAG) offers financial support for credentialing, licensure, internships, degrees, or certificates for working residents in Essex, Elizabethtown, Lewis, Westport, or Willsboro, NY. Award amounts range from $250 to $3,000 annually, with renewal options available based on academic progress. This grant aims to enhance career opportunities and foster educational pathways, ensuring that eligible residents can pursue their professional goals effectively.

The Kalamazoo Public Library Amanda Green Scholarship, offered by the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, supports graduate students in Library and Information Sciences who are residents or graduates from Kalamazoo County. This renewable scholarship helps cover tuition and related expenses, emphasizing financial need and promoting diversity in the library profession. It aims to enhance representation of librarians of color, contributing to a more equitable community and nurturing future leaders in library services.

The Alfred M. Aseel Legacy Scholarship honors the memory of Alfred Aseel’s parents and supports non-traditional students from Tupper Lake and surrounding areas in their pursuit of higher education. With a grant maximum of $5,000 annually, this scholarship aims to empower students to reinvent their futures through accredited colleges, universities, trade schools, or certification programs in the U.S. Eligibility includes a minimum GPA of 2.5 and a commitment to personal growth and integrity.

The David “Fuzz” Wilfong Agricultural Scholarship, established by the Community Foundation of Whitley County, honors the legacy of a dedicated farmer and South Whitley High School graduate. This scholarship supports Whitley County seniors pursuing education in agriculture, encouraging the next generation of agricultural leaders. With a focus on philanthropy and community enrichment, the foundation aims to create lasting support for students passionate about agriculture.

The Frank & Hildegrade Goodrich Family Scholarship, administered by the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, supports students from Kalamazoo County pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies at select universities. Eligible applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, demonstrate financial need, and be actively involved in college or community activities. This scholarship can be used for various educational expenses, fostering access to higher education and contributing to the community's development and equity.

The Eva L. Ozier Scholarship, awarded by the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, supports Black, Non-Hispanic/Latinx high school seniors from Kalamazoo County, Michigan, pursuing post-secondary education. Eligible students must maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA and demonstrate financial need. This multiyear scholarship can be applied to various educational expenses and is renewable for up to two additional years, honoring Eva L. Ozier's contributions to the community while expanding access to higher education for students of color.

The E. Earl Wright Scholarship, awarded by the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, supports Kalamazoo County students pursuing a two-year degree or vocational certification. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors or current undergraduates with a minimum 2.0 GPA, demonstrate financial need, and have work experience. This renewable scholarship honors Dr. E. Earl Wright and provides essential financial assistance to cover various educational costs, promoting equity and access to higher education in the community.

The Jewish Life Grants by the Charles H. Revson Foundation support organizations in Israel and North America that address social and spiritual needs within diverse communities. With a focus on collaborative efforts, the Foundation aims to empower under-resourced fields and promote courageous leadership. Current initiatives include enhancing civic service and expanding community chaplaincy. Letters of inquiry are welcome, and grants are available for registered nonprofits, excluding endowments and capital campaigns.
