Husvar Memorial Scholarship FundFrank was a determined man. During a 21-year Army career, he saw action in WWII and Korea, and rose to the rank of 1st Sergeant. When he retired at a comparatively young age, he was far from ready for a life of leisure. He became a math and science teacher. When throat cancer forced Frank to have a laryngectomy, he refused to let the problem get him down. He learned esophageal speech and returned to his middle school students. Later, he went to the Mayo Clinic for training to become a certified speech teacher, resolving to help others with similar challenges.Frank was very interested in children and education,” Martha notes. “The scholarship fund is a way to carry on his name and to honor him.”

The Hematology Inclusion Pathway Resident Award supports underrepresented medical residents in hematology in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Participants receive $5,000 for research, mentorship from ASH members, and funding for the ASH annual meeting. PFund Foundation builds equity with LGBTQ+ communities across the Upper Midwest by providing grants and scholarships, developing leaders, and inspiring giving.

PFund Foundation Scholarship

Our scholarship program awards LGBTQIA individuals for their commitment and leadership within LGBTQ+ communities. Scholarships support post-secondary academic programs as well as non-scholastic leadership development opportunities. The scholarship must be used within a year unless it is a multiyear scholarship.

Non-scholastic leadership opportunities include leadership development, community activism or organizing, or to attending conferences and workshops that enhance leadership skills. Examples include, but are not limited to: Wellstone Action, Creating Change, or the Rockwood Leadership Institute. Leadership development opportunities can be located anywhere, but the applicants' work in LGBTQ+ communities must be based in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin and/or the Native Nations that share the same geography.  

The Youth In Philanthropy Grant, offered by the Northland Foundation, invites youth in Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis Counties, as well as Superior, Wisconsin, to apply for up to $1,000. Projects must be initiated and executed by young people with adult support, addressing community needs while fostering youth leadership. This initiative encourages engagement with local schools and organizations, empowering youth to make a positive impact in their communities.

Stark Community Foundation is one of the area’s major sources of college scholarship support— thanks to the generosity of caring individuals, families and businesses that have created scholarship funds.

The Foundation currently manages more than 100 scholarship funds that support hundreds of deserving students each year from Stark and Carroll counties. In 2025, more than $1,000,000 was awarded to local students to help them achieve their educational dreams.

The Melvin L. and Frances E. Tolson Scholarship Trust Fund

The Melvin L. and Frances E. Tolson Scholarship Trust Fund was established to assist students who are residents of Carroll County, Ohio in furthering their education with interests in either aviation, art education or fine and performing arts who are enrolled or accepted at a college, university, technical, or vocational school.

Albert Smith Conservation Scholarship

Albert A. Smith was born in Omer, Mich., in 1913. He began his education in a one room schoolhouse near Omer and successfully completed his first three grades in the first year of school. Upon graduation from Flint Northern High School at age 15, he went on to receive an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and thereafter a law degree in 1939. In the mid-1950s, he opened a law office in Saginaw that later became the law firm of Smith Bovill, P.C.

Mr. Smith’s love of the law was matched by his interest in the outdoors, and in particular his beloved Ruffed Grouse. He used his rolling farm and woods to entertain his friends, clients and courtroom adversaries. He was a consummate host to anyone who shared his love for the hunt.

Al was generous with his time and resources. He supported and served on the boards of his favorite charities and civic groups, including the Salvation Army, the Ruffed Grouse Society where he served as national president, the Samaritan Center and First Congregational Church. In 1976, he was recognized for his outstanding conservation work when he received the Wildlife Conservationist of the Year Award from the Michigan United Conservation Clubs.

The Health and Health Care Disparities grant aims to support innovative research that addresses the health challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, particularly in communities experiencing health disparities. Key application deadlines span from February 2024 to October 2026. This funding opportunity invites research proposals that explore the underlying factors affecting the health and well-being of these populations, promoting interventions that can lead to significant improvements in health equity.

The Marion A. and Ruth K. Sherwood Family Scholarship Fund supports current college students from the Tri-Cities area, promoting academic achievement and community involvement. Funded by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation, this scholarship emphasizes financial need and aims to assist students in continuing their education. Applicants must submit transcripts and additional documentation to demonstrate eligibility. This initiative reflects the Sherwoods' commitment to fostering educational opportunities and community betterment.

The SDIAS Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship, offered by The San Diego Foundation, is designed for high-achieving seniors in San Diego County. It supports students enrolling full-time in accredited four-year universities across the U.S. with a minimum GPA of 3.5. This scholarship aims to empower future leaders and enhance educational opportunities, reflecting the Foundation's commitment to community development and equitable access to higher education.

Each scholarship was established by a generous individual, family, or organization with a desire to assist high school students, recent high school graduates, and adult learners to continue their education. 

R.C. and Betsy Williamson Scholarship

The R.C. and Betsy Williamson Scholarship Fund was established in 2009 by Brad Williamson, their son, to honor his father and mother. R.C. Williamson was born in Middlesboro, Kentucky. He married Betsy Berry of Staunton, VA in 1949 and they moved to Richmond in 1950. R.C. spent his working career with the Natural Gas Company of VA, Inc. (MR ABLE PROPANE) until his death in January of 2008. R.C. passionately believed in the value of education and was himself the recipient of post-secondary scholarships.

The purpose of the scholarship fund is to support post-secondary educational scholarships for qualifying graduates of public or private high schools in the Central Virginia area. Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate Christian values, financial need, commitment to their community and academic achievement.

This scholarship is available for up to a total of four years, provided you:

• Have maintained good academic standing.
• Continue to be enrolled in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university, community college or trade school in the continental United States.

The American Bach Society offers the Language Study Grant to support Ph.D. students in the US or Canada who need language training for Bach-related research. Grants can cover tuition and ancillary costs, with awards up to $6,000. Applicants must demonstrate that they have sought additional financial aid from their institutions. The Evelyn Manning Potter and Vivian Grove Strunk Memorial Scholarship, administered by the Community Foundation of Washington County, MD, supports students pursuing careers in the administrative professional field. Established in memory of two dedicated professionals, this scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to qualified individuals, promoting their educational and career aspirations. The foundation offers over 100 scholarships, reflecting its commitment to enhancing the community's quality of life and supporting local talent.

Louis R. & Helen E. Schwartz FFA Agricultural Scholarship

The Louis R. and Helen E. Schwartz FFA Agricultural Scholarship was established to help prepare Saginaw County students for a future in agriculture or an agriculture-related field. Both Lou and Helen Schwartz were raised on farms in Iowa, so they knew from first-hand experience that farming can be a difficult business. They moved to Frankenmuth when Lou opened area S&H Stores in 1962. The stores were sold to Quality Farm and Fleet in 1982.

Scholarships are awarded to students from Saginaw County, Michigan; Lyon County, Minnesota and Muscatine County, Iowa.
