National Housing Innovation Grant Competition

Home is foundational. It’s where we plant roots, raise and care for our families, and build community bonds. Yet in every corner of the country, millions of people of all ages and backgrounds need a home they can afford.

Wells Fargo is meeting this moment with a powerful grant opportunity. Together with Enterprise, Wells Fargo has launched the third iteration of the Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge. The 2026 cycle of the housing innovation competition will identify and propel proven, ready-to-scale solutions that transform current practices and increase housing choice and access.

Eligible applicants will compete for five individual grants of $2 million to advance their innovation and drive meaningful, systems-level change in the housing and adjacent industries. Winners will gain access to mentorship and coaching from industry leaders and experts and join a powerful network of Breakthrough Challenge innovators.

Focus Areas

This third cycle of the Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge aims to meet the nation’s affordable housing challenges across all types of communities: Native, rural, suburban, tribal, and urban.

Proposals must encompass one or more of three focus areas:

• Design and Construction
• Finance
• Service Delivery and Programs

Applicants will be asked to show how their proof of concept or pilot program has achieved clear outcomes and success, and provide a clear pathway to expanding the innovation’s reach and impact

Affordability

Innovations must serve residents at these income levels:

• Rental: 80% AMI or below
• Homeownership: 120% AMI or below
• Workforce housing: 120% AMI or below

The Target Foundation's Hometown Racial Equity Grant aims to advance racial equity for underserved communities in the Twin Cities. With over a century of commitment to social responsibility, the Foundation addresses systemic barriers by investing in entrepreneurship, workforce development, housing, and asset building. By supporting BIPOC-led organizations, the Foundation seeks to create equitable economic opportunities, ensuring that all families can thrive and contribute to a vibrant community. Grants range from $25,000 to $200,000, focusing on sustainable impact.

The Northland Foundation offers quarterly grants aimed at supporting nonprofit organizations in Northeast Minnesota and nearby Native nations. These grants provide flexible funding for general operations or specific programs that address community needs such as health, housing, and education. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, educational institutions, and local governments. The foundation prioritizes projects that promote equity, community engagement, and sustainable impact, ensuring that resources reach underserved populations.

The Impact Fund provides recoverable grants to legal services nonprofits and small law firms working on social, environmental, and economic justice issues. With over $10 million awarded since 1992, the fund supports impactful litigation addressing systemic injustices. Grants range from $10,000 to $50,000 and prioritize cases directly involving affected communities. Recipients must repay the grant amount with interest if they recover fees or costs, ensuring sustainability for future funding.

The Minnesota School-Based Health Center Grant provides crucial funding for new clinics aimed at enhancing student health services. This program supports the establishment of School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) that deliver comprehensive medical care, including preventive and behavioral health services. With a three-year funding cycle, organizations can plan and launch these centers, ensuring that by year three, students have access to essential health services directly within their educational environment.

The J.W. Couch Foundation Grant focuses on supporting Wildlife Conservation nonprofit organizations that align with their mission of community betterment and environmental protection. The foundation seeks partnerships with organizations that promote animal wellbeing, early childhood education, teacher support, and outdoor activities. Eligible applicants must be registered 501(c)3 nonprofits or for-profit entities aligned with their charitable programs. This grant emphasizes collaboration and community engagement to create lasting impacts.

The Sauer Family Foundation Grant focuses on enhancing the lives of at-risk children in Minnesota, particularly in the seven-county metro area. The foundation prioritizes funding for initiatives that promote family stability, emotional safety in schools, and educational success for children facing learning disabilities. With a commitment to community-based support, the foundation also emphasizes the importance of diverse workforce pathways, ensuring that programs are inclusive and equitable. Applications for new funding opportunities will be limited as the foundation approaches its planned sunset in 2027.

The Minnesota Hospital Registered Nurse Loan Forgiveness program aims to recruit and retain healthcare professionals in underserved areas. Funded by the Minnesota Department of Health, it offers forgiveness for qualified educational loans, with a minimum eligible debt of $6,000. Registered nurses in nonprofit and public hospitals are eligible, provided they live in Minnesota. The program supports healthcare access by alleviating financial burdens, ensuring more nurses can serve communities in need.

The TJX Foundation Grants support nonprofit organizations located within 15 miles of a TJX store that align with their community mission. Eligible areas include basic needs, education for at-risk youth, workforce training, and safety from domestic violence. Organizations must be a registered 501(c)(3) for at least 12 months and have a nondiscrimination policy. Applications are invited through a Letter of Inquiry, with funding decisions based on community impact.

The grant aims to enhance access to newborn hearing and pulse oximetry screenings in out-of-hospital settings across Minnesota. By providing portable screening equipment, it seeks to ensure timely identification and intervention for infants who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) and those with critical congenital heart disease (CCHD). This initiative aligns with state mandates to improve newborn health outcomes and connect families with essential services.

The Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Employee Scholarship Grant provides financial support for HCBS provider organizations to fund employee scholarships and repay educational loans. This initiative aims to enhance workforce development in nursing and health care fields, enabling career advancement for employees within the HCBS sector. Eligible nonprofit and for-profit organizations can apply for these grants, facilitating improved service delivery and employee retention in this essential industry.

The Home and Community-Based Services Employee Scholarship Grant and Loan Forgiveness Program, established by the Minnesota Department of Health, aims to strengthen the workforce in the HCBS sector. This initiative provides financial support for employees pursuing further education and training, while also offering loan forgiveness for qualified educational expenses. By enhancing the skills of the workforce, the program seeks to improve the quality of care in home and community-based services across Minnesota.

The Sheltering Arms Foundation Grant supports high-quality direct-service programs for children aged 0-12, focusing on early childhood and youth development along with advocacy efforts. The foundation aims to diminish opportunity gaps and enhance public commitment to children's well-being in Minnesota. Programs must be culturally appropriate and involve family engagement, ensuring children are socially and emotionally ready for kindergarten and prepared for academic success by 7th grade. Eligible organizations must be non-profits based in Minnesota.

The Summer Health Care Internship Grant Program, authorized by Minnesota Statutes Sec. 144.1464, aims to enhance the health care workforce by providing grants to hospitals and clinics for summer internships. Targeting secondary and postsecondary students, it promotes career exposure in health care fields, addressing workforce shortages and improving access for diverse populations. Funded by the Minnesota Department of Health, this initiative supports collaboration with educational institutions, ensuring a robust pipeline for future health care professionals.
