Scholarship Award Details

Established by Rhode Island PBS in 2017, the Ocean State Media Scholarship offers awards to residents of the station’s demographic market area who demonstrate promise of a successful career in the fields of journalism and/or media. Awards of up to $15,000 will be awarded annually and are renewable for an additional three years.

Columbus Matrix Foundation Scholarship

Since the early days of print journalism, The Association for Women in Communications has evolved to become the overarching professional organization to unite communicators across a vast spectrum of disciplines-from print and broadcast journalism, to graphic design, photography, public relations, advertising, marketing, new media, and much more.

Award Amount:

• Up to four scholarships of $10,000 payable over four years at $2,500 per academic year.

Alpha Chapter Controlling Corp. of the Delta Theta Sigma Fraternity Scholarship Fund

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship awards to deserving high school students who plan to attend an accredited college or university and undertake studies in marketing, communications, journalism, or advertising.

Kiwanis Club of Marietta members participate in service projects, hold fundraisers, and change children’s lives in our community. In addition, club members contribute to Kiwanis International initiatives helping clubs around the world assist children with education, basic needs, and medical care.

The Kiwanis Club of Marietta has proudly established and contributed to several scholarship endowments over the years to support deserving college students in our community. These scholarships are made possible through our club's Flag Project, which places over 1,300 American flags in front of homes and businesses five times each year.

Bill “Scoop” Kinney Journalism Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2006 by the Marietta Kiwanis Foundation in honor of Mr. Bill Kinney, the Senior Associate Editor of the Marietta Daily Journal. 

Selection emphasis will be placed on academic performance with priority given to current or former Cobb or Marietta.

Multi-Year Regional Civic Health Program Grants

Program support is for organizations based outside Greater New Haven and/or the Valley with a mission dedicated to advocacy, civic engagement, community organizing and journalism. Organizations must have had active programming for 2 years and a budget last fiscal year of >$250,000.   

Available only to organizations based outside of the 20-town region served by The  Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and the Valley Community Foundation.  The mission of eligible organizations must focus on civic health, including advocacy, community organizing, civic engagement, and journalism. Organizations working in other issue areas will not be considered.

Programming support is defined as a grant made for a new or existing specific segment of an organization’s work that services one or more towns in the Community Foundations’ region.

Scholarships support aspiring college students who hold the promise of tomorrow’s progress.

The Congressman Mark Foley Scholarship for Journalism Education Fund

Must be enrolled in a program with a major in Journalism.

Graduates of Conotton Valley or Carrollton High Schools pursuing journalism, writing, media, music, history, or related studies at accredited colleges can receive renewable scholarships of more than US $500. Stark Community Foundation provides this support, which may benefit Connecticut-focused journalism students who meet these specific school and field-of-study criteria.

American Indian and Alaska Native graduate students in journalism, communication, literature, or related fields studying full-time in the U.S. can receive need-based support for tuition and academic expenses. Grants from Native Forward Scholars Fund help Connecticut and other U.S. students who can document Tribal affiliation or qualifying descent pursue advanced degrees in these disciplines.

Qualified 501(c)(3) journalism and media organizations headquartered in North America, including those in Connecticut, can seek funding for Adventist-focused reporting projects, training, and related costs. Versacare provides US $5,000 - US $15,000 through its Journalism for Adventist Solutions program to support investigative work, storytelling, technology, travel, and other non-payroll project expenses.

Journalism organizations and freelance reporters covering U.S. health care affordability and access can receive US $20,000 for outstanding television or audio reporting, including podcasts and streaming content. With a mission to elevate impactful health care reporting, the National Institute for Health Care Management honors work that informs health plans, policymakers, and consumers, including journalists serving Connecticut audiences.

Local journalism outlets in Connecticut producing stories on U.S. health care affordability and access can apply for the Local Media Award, which offers a US $15,000 prize for outstanding reporting. The National Institute for Health Care Management honors high-quality, original work from newspapers, magazines, their websites, and nonprofit news organizations focused on local markets.

Journalists and news organizations producing investigative or general reporting on U.S. health care affordability and access can apply for NIHCM Foundation’s Investigative and General Reporting Award, which offers a US $20,000 prize. Grants from NIHCM Foundation help Connecticut journalism projects when nationally focused and published by newspapers, magazines, websites, or nonprofit news outlets.

Journalists and specialty publications in the U.S. producing trade reporting on health care affordability and access can apply for the National Institute for Health Care Management’s Trade Journalism Award, which provides US $15,000 for outstanding work. Connecticut-based journalism outlets serving specialty audiences may be eligible if their 2025 stories meet the health care focus requirements.

Journalism professionals and media outlets in Connecticut covering forestry and natural resources can receive more than US $500 for outstanding reporting through the Outstanding Forestry Journalism Award. Society of American Foresters offers an honorarium, convention registration, and travel support for impactful print, television, or radio work that advances public understanding of forestry issues.

Students interested in journalism in Connecticut and beyond can receive scholarship support for higher education that recognizes their journalistic work. The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region’s Gene Robb Journalism Scholarship supports those with a clearly demonstrated interest in journalism, requiring applicants to submit samples of their reporting or related work.

High school seniors interested in journalism and needing financial assistance may be eligible for scholarships supporting postsecondary education, including opportunities relevant to Connecticut journalism students. With a mission to empower meaningful giving, The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region offers the Michael Hurewitz Scholarship through a universal application covering more than 30 scholarship funds.

Journalists and media outlets producing investigative or commentary work can apply for the Sidney Awards, which provide US $1,000 honoraria for outstanding journalism in service of the common good. Focused on journalism, the Sidney Hillman Foundation invites Connecticut reporters and news organizations to submit monthly nominations for impactful pieces published or aired in any medium.

Connecticut journalists covering technology and society can access funding through Omidyar Network Fund for intensive reporting projects. U.S.-based freelancers, staff reporters, editors, and teams may receive US $5,000 - US $25,000 for travel, research, data access, multimedia, and reporting time, especially on AI policy, industry investigations, impacts on families, and workplace technology.

Connecticut K-12 institutions and organizations serving at least 500 students and/or educators can access funding through the K-12 Education Grant Program on Global Health to run journalism-based global health projects. Grants from Pulitzer Center provide up to US $1,500 for initiatives using Center-supported reporting to deepen understanding and inspire community-level change.

Connecticut journalism students can access funding through Maine Community Foundation to pursue college or graduate studies in journalism or closely related media fields. Applicants must be graduates of Maine high schools or home-schooled in a Maine community, and awards range from US $1,000 - US $60,000 with potential for renewal.

Students pursuing creative writing or journalism from Chelan or Douglas County in Washington can receive scholarship support for high school or higher education studies. Grants from Community Foundation of North Central Washington help aspiring writers with at least a 3.0 GPA who submit a short original writing sample. Connecticut journalism programs may find this relevant for individual students with local ties.

Students pursuing journalism or communications degrees in the U.S. can receive renewable support for tuition and educational expenses through the Express-News Charitable Foundation Scholarship Fund. With a mission to build community, San Antonio Area Foundation provides scholarships for full-time students who are South Texas residents and high school graduates, which may include those studying in Connecticut.

Muslim undergraduate and graduate students in journalism, media studies, or related writing fields in the U.S., including those from Connecticut, can receive US $3,000 - US $5,000 for their studies. Islamic Scholarship Fund provides American Muslim media scholars with tuition support plus access to mentorship, internships, and career development opportunities.

Journalism students can receive scholarship support for higher education in the U.S., including Connecticut, to advance their academic and professional training. Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee supports juniors, seniors, graduate, and PhD candidates in journalism who demonstrate financial need, maintain a 3.0 GPA, submit an essay and work samples, and may reapply for a second year.

Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award

Matthew Power was an award-winning journalist who reported empathetically on the human condition. He died in March 2014, while on assignment in Uganda.

About the Award

The Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award is a grant of $15,000 to support the work of a promising early-career nonfiction journalist on a story that uncovers truths about the human condition.

Offered for the first time in 2015, the Award has been endowed by individuals and organizations touched by the life and work of Matthew Power, a wide-roving and award-winning journalist who sought to live and share the experience of the individuals and places on which he was reporting. Power, a longtime friend of the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, died in March 2014, while on assignment in Uganda.

The award proceeds from the recognition that many important stories need to be reported from afar, and that publications do not always have the resources to send a journalist where the story is. The money need not be used exclusively for travel, but we expect that most successful applications will include such expenses. A panel of NYU journalism professors, outside writers, and editors will review the proposals. Finalists will be asked to take part in an interview online.

The judges will be interested in perpetuating Power’s legacy, as his former editor Roger Hodge put it, of “strong, character-driven narratives with detailed scenes and lyrical description.” Power was always open to the absurdity that often attends politics and international affairs; he was always searching, as he put it, for “the human truth beneath the sorry facts.” Power’s ultimate ambition, he added, was literary beauty.

That said, judges will be looking for a journalist as singular in his or her own approach as Power was in his. In addition to longform print projects, we will consider audio projects involving substantial reporting and running over 20 minutes in length. The award will not fund proposals to report on armed conflicts where journalists are already imperiled, nor projects that are mainly investigatory. The winner will normally receive visiting scholar privileges at NYU, including library access.

Grants for Research About Urban Communication Issues

Since our launch in 2005, the Urban Communication Foundation has provided awards and grants to dozens of distinguished scholars, researchers, and journalists to recognize and support provocative work that contributes in significant ways to the discourse around urban communication issues.

While most of our recipients hail from academia and journalism, we also encourage submissions from other practitioners whose work will lend new insights into the discipline, raise broader awareness of related socio-political, economic, and cultural concerns, or influence public policy.

Gene Burd Grant for Research in Urban Journalism Studies

The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication has partnered with the Urban Communication Foundation to create the Gene Burd Grant for Research in Urban Journalism Studies. The purpose of this annual grant is to stimulate research that explains, enlightens, inspires, and improves the practice and study of journalism and communication in order to advance our understanding of journalism in urban environments.
