We partner with Civic Federal Credit Union to provide both professional development and student scholarships.

Over many years, the scholarships have provided nearly $3.5 million to credit union members to further their education. This investment not only advances the professional development and educational goals of Civic members, but also strengthens the communities they serve — amplifying their leadership impact and deepening their ability to drive meaningful change across North Carolina.

UNC School of Government Scholarship

North Carolinians serving in local government, the nonprofit sector, or other public service fields — and who are members of Civic Credit Union — are eligible to apply for a scholarship that helps offset the cost of tuition for conferences, courses, and seminars offered by the UNC School of Government in Chapel Hill.

The Civic Scholarship Committee reviews applications based on the course start date.

Funds may not be awarded on a reimbursement basis for courses or programs that are completed or in progress.

Proof of registration for courses is required in order to apply for a scholarship. For applicants waiting on acceptance to a course, a copy of the confirmation email proving the applicant has applied to attend will suffice.

Funds can be used to help cover the cost of tuition for conference, classes and seminars offered by the UNC School of Government.

The Jecholiah Dinkins Hollar Legacy Scholarship, offered by the North Carolina Community Foundation, supports high school graduates from Yadkin County pursuing undergraduate degrees at private colleges in North Carolina. Preference is given to those attending Duke University. Selection is based on academic achievement, moral character, and community service. Established in honor of Jecholiah Dinkins Hollar, this scholarship emphasizes the importance of education and fostering a love of learning for future generations.

Gerstbrein/McCanna Scholarship for the Arts

After a long and rewarding career in Landscape Design and Art Education, Lisa Gerstbrein/McCanna wanted to promote the Arts and Industrial Arts in the community where she made her home and her livelihood. Her career brought her tremendous joy in pursuits that she loved as well as the satisfying reward of helping students find inspiration in the worlds of Art and Industrial Art. She is a true believer in the concept of STEAM based education. Accordingly, she established a fund to provide scholarships for the advanced education of advancing Senior High School Students in these areas who are residents of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania and are pursuing higher education in an approved program within 300 miles of their respective school - Armstrong High School, West Shamokin High School or Lenape Technical School.

Eligible applicants must be associated with a nonprofit organization and demonstrate a commitment to local leadership and broader policy connections. The board meets biannually to decide on approximately 15 grants per year, focusing mainly on general support.

The James G Hanes Memorial Fund Grant focuses on supporting public charities in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, and the Triad of North Carolina. It aims to create a positive impact across the state, prioritizing non-recurring grants. However, operational grants may be considered for new program development, with funding typically limited to three years. Organizations must be 501(c)(3) exempt to qualify.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) is offering grants for community-based services targeting substance use disorders. This initiative aims to expand access to essential services while addressing gaps in care across the state. Eligible organizations can apply for project budgets up to $500,000 annually, with at least 12 contracts expected to be awarded. Focused on youth development, hunger and nutrition, and veteran services, the Foundation prioritizes projects in regions such as the Southwest and Southeast United States. However, they do not fund requests exceeding $25,000 or support multi-year pledges, fundraising events, or political causes. Their mission continues to foster community connections and belonging.

The Dominion Energy Educational Equity Scholarship Program aims to support students from specific states pursuing higher education. With awards of $5,000 for 2-year programs and $10,000 for 4-year degrees, this program emphasizes both need and merit in its selection process. Administered by Scholarship America®, it is open to high school seniors and undergraduates maintaining a GPA of 3.0. Awards may be renewed for up to three years or until a bachelor's degree is obtained.

Partnerships Supporting Parent/Caregiver Mental Health & Well-being

Across North Carolina, parents and caregivers of young children (prenatal to age five) are experiencing high levels of stress, isolation, and difficulty accessing support. One in three parents report feeling lonely, and more than a quarter report having no one to turn to for support.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation (Blue Cross NC Foundation) recognizes that caregiver mental health and well-being are foundational to the healthy development and long-term health and well-being outcomes of young children.

While a range of mental health and well-being services exist, these supports are often fragmented and difficult to navigate. At the same time, caregivers vary in the types of support they trust and use, underscoring the need for approaches that are connected, community-rooted, and responsive to family preferences.

We see an opportunity to strengthen and better connect existing supports to improve caregiver well-being, increase social connection, and build stronger pathways to mental health care. By working upstream with families during a critical developmental period, we can promote good mental health and resilience, set the next generation up for success, and prevent the crisis we are seeing in today’s youth.

The Community Possible Grant Program by U.S. Bank aims to foster economic and workforce advancement, as well as safe and affordable housing. By partnering with 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, the program seeks to drive lasting change within communities through collaborative grantmaking. Priority is given to organizations that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, and that address multiple pillars of work, home, and play. This initiative reflects U.S. Bank's commitment to creating a more equitable society.

The Kids 'N Community Foundation offers Future Canes Grants to support youth hockey programs in North Carolina. With a commitment of at least $60,000 annually, these grants aim to enhance accessibility and growth in youth hockey. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits serving children, demonstrating effective program delivery and a focus on health or education. The Foundation emphasizes impactful service, ensuring funds directly benefit children in need, while also outlining specific ineligible activities.

The Truliant Foundation Scholarships, established in 1996, have awarded over $265,000 to more than 250 high school seniors pursuing higher education. These scholarships, funded by the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation, are open to members of any credit union in North and South Carolina, supporting both academic and needs-based candidates, including first-time college students and high school seniors. Eligible applicants must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and enroll as full-time students.

The Truliant Foundation Scholarships, established in 1996, have awarded over $265,000 to more than 250 high school seniors pursuing higher education. The Clyde Padgett Scholarship specifically offers $2,500 to eligible applicants who are members of a North or South Carolina credit union, maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and enroll as full-time students in the 2025-2026 academic year. This initiative supports first-time college students, including dependents of Truliant employees.

The Truliant Foundation offers the Fred J. Sarda Scholarships, providing $1,500 each to qualified applicants. Established in 1996, this program has awarded over $265,000 to more than 250 high school seniors who are members of a North or South Carolina credit union. Eligible candidates must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be first-time college students enrolled full-time for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Charlie's Heart Foundation Annual Grant Program supports small nonprofits focusing on mental well-being for families in underserved communities. Grants between $5,000-$30,000 are available, prioritizing organizations based in North Carolina. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt and demonstrate alignment with the Foundation's mission, organizational need, and program sustainability. The Foundation does not fund individuals, private foundations, or religious organizations, ensuring a strong focus on impactful community programs.

The Department of Health and Human Services manages the delivery of health- and human-related services for all North Carolinians, especially our most vulnerable people – children, elderly, disabled and low-income families. The department works closely with health care professionals, community leaders and advocacy groups; local, state and federal entities; and many other stakeholders to make this happen.

State Designated Rural Health Centers Support Grant

Purpose: These grant funds, supported through the North Carolina General Assembly, allow ORH to partner with local communities to provide funding to improve their ability to serve underserved populations who would otherwise be unable to access needed primary care services due to geographic, economic, or other barriers. State Designated Rural Health Centers have become an integral part of the health care safety net for North Carolina’s rural and underserved residents.
