The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region

The Community Foundation is a devoted advocate for the vitality and well-being of the Rappahannock River Region. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that manages and distributes charitable giving in the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline, and the City of Fredericksburg.

Scholarships

One of The Community Foundation’s strategies for preserving and growing the quality of life in our region is supporting higher education for area students. Generous individuals and families, companies and organizations establish endowed scholarship funds and the proceeds from these funds benefit deserving students. Donors work with foundation staff to determine appropriate criteria for each fund. The Community Foundation currently administers more than fifty scholarship funds.

The Mary E. Berger Scholarship Fund

The Mary E. Berger Scholarship was established with a gift from Mary E. Berger and a future gift by the estate of Mary E. Berger to assist high school students who wish to attend college or university or professional school to pursue studies in art, music, history, political science, English, journalism and related liberal arts subject.

Scholarship Overview

Since 1980, the Northern New York Community Foundation has awarded more than $28 million in scholarships to students from Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.

Evergreen STEM Scholarship

The Evergreen STEM Scholarship is a $3,000 award for the first year of undergraduate study. Scholarship award decisions will be made in the summer 2026. Scholarship award checks are not presented until summer 2027 as students head to college.

The Focused Technology Research and Development (R01) grant supports innovative projects aimed at developing technologies to enhance biomedical research. This funding opportunity emphasizes the creation of laboratory instruments, algorithms, and biological systems that can significantly improve research capabilities. Key deadlines for applications are set for February, June, and October of 2025 through 2027, ensuring ample time for proposal submissions. The initiative is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), part of the US Department of Health and Human Services.

The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts administers over 160 scholarships. Some of the funds help students from a particular school or area; others provide financial assistance to those pursuing a specific field of study; still others assist students that are most in need. Students who apply to the Scholarship program may be eligible for many of these funds.

William T. Maunsell Memorial Scholarship Fund

To support graduating seniors from Westfield High School, Westfield Vocational Technical High School and St. Mary’s High School in Westfield who have average grades and are pursuing degrees in education, criminal justice or nursing.

Additional Guidelines

• Students can receive up to $3,000 in scholarships from the Community Foundation.
• Scholarship awards could impact the financial aid offered by a college, and students are advised to check with their college financial aid offices about this.
• Scholarships may be used to offset tuition, fees, room and board, and other items included as part of the cost for attending the institution. Some part and/or all the award could be considered taxable income. It is advisable students check with the college or tax accountant regarding this matter.

The James Sherwood Tipton Eagle Scout Scholarship, provided by the Ashland County Community Foundation, supports graduating seniors from Ashland County high schools who plan to major in Language Arts. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be accepted to accredited colleges. This scholarship honors James Tipton's commitment to scouting and community service, reflecting his values of respect for life and dedication to helping others.

The Harrison County Community Foundation (HCCF) offers grants to support projects that enhance arts and culture, community development, education, environmental stewardship, and health services in Harrison County. Established in 2012, HCCF aims to create impactful opportunities for all residents. Grants typically range from $500 to $5,000, with larger amounts considered based on project potential. Nonprofits, schools, and public organizations are encouraged to apply for funding to address pressing community needs.

The NIAID aims to enhance our understanding of the interplay between chronic and infectious diseases through innovative precision systems biology research. By utilizing advanced technologies such as multi-omics and artificial intelligence, the initiative focuses on uncovering critical pathways that connect infections to chronic health issues. This multidisciplinary approach leverages longitudinal patient data to inform and improve prevention and treatment strategies, ultimately seeking to provide insights into disease progression and host-pathogen interactions.

The Ashtabula Foundation provides grants of $5,001 and above to non-profit organizations in Ashtabula County, focusing on arts, culture, education, recreation, and conservation. Organizations must hold a 501(C)(3) status and utilize funds to benefit local citizens. Each organization may submit one grant request annually. The foundation prioritizes projects that create a significant impact on the community, emphasizing human services alongside other categories.

The Guernsey County Foundation Grant, in partnership with the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, supports projects that enhance community and individual potential across various sectors. With funding requests ranging from $500 to $10,000, applicants from nonprofits, schools, and public organizations can address needs in arts, education, economic development, environmental stewardship, and health services. This initiative aims to empower residents of Guernsey County by fostering innovative solutions and community engagement.

The Gallia Community Foundation Grant, established by the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, aims to enhance the quality of life in Gallia County through philanthropic initiatives. Grants, ranging from $500 to $5,000, support projects in five key areas: arts and culture, economic development, education, environmental stewardship, and health services. This funding prioritizes individuals and organizations that address community needs and foster local potential, ensuring sustainable resources for the future.

PLTW Computer Science students are technology trailblazers who are empowered through transportable skills and prepared to start their career, whether that is in computer science or not. PLTW Computer Science engages students in collaborative projects that help them develop in-demand computer science knowledge as well as transportable skills like creative thinking and communication. And whether they’re creating an online art gallery or using automation to process and analyze DNA-sequence data, PLTW Computer Science students are seeing how their learning connects to the real world.

PLTW Computer Science - New Program (3M)

3M forms lasting partnerships with communities and provides resources to help them succeed and grow – ensuring a more interconnected and thriving world. 3M inspires the next generation of science leaders through the following goals:

3M has partnered with PLTW to ensure students and teachers have the tools, resources and knowledge they need to succeed in STEM.

Who We Are

The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati is an apostolic Catholic community of women religious that exists to carry out the Gospel of Jesus Christ through service and prayer in the world.

Sister Elise Fund Grant

These small grants are requested by a Sister of Charity. Eligible organizations include:

• those where a Sister is currently involved in the nonprofit organization as a board or committee member, paid staff member or regular volunteer, or
• those either founded by a Sister of Charity, or at one time had Sisters involved.

The grant was named in honor of Sister Elise Halloran, SC, who served as treasurer for the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati from 1944 to 1965. Sister Elise was widely known for her financial acumen and stewardship of investments, as well as her strong faith, kindness, perseverance, care for those in poverty, and her support of Catholic education.

You Need to Know:

• Grant funds must be used for the specific purpose identified in the Sister Elise Grant Fund application. Once granted, any change in purpose must be approved in advance by the endorsing Sister(s) and SC Ministry Foundation before funds are spent.
• The authority and accountability for all requests to the Sister Elise Grant Fund rests with the nonprofit’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
• Supplies or minor equipment funded through the request become the property of the nonprofit organization.
• The Sister Elise Grant may not be used to fund a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati’s salary or benefits.
• Due to our fiduciary and stewardship responsibility, SC Ministry Foundation reserves the right to approve or decline all requests.
• Upon conclusion of the grant, the organization is required to contact the Sister of Charity who supported the grant to describe the results of the project and usage of the funds.

The Rachael and Ben Vaughan Foundation offers grants ranging from $2,000 to $20,000 for projects focused on animal rights, education, environmental preservation, poverty reduction, and religious initiatives. The foundation prioritizes local Texas projects but accepts applications from outside the state. Grants are awarded only to tax-exempt organizations, and projects should be completed within twelve months. The foundation aims to support initiatives that benefit local communities without duplicating existing efforts.

AGC CEF Skilled Trades Scholarship

This scholarship is designed to support students pursuing post-secondary construction industry training programs. Scholarship amounts range from $500 to $2,500.

The Volk – Geyman Scholarship, established by the San Juan Pilots Association, honors John Volk and John Geyman by providing financial assistance to students pursuing careers in aviation and medicine. This scholarship aims to support high school graduates with a commitment to academic excellence and community service. Eligible fields include aviation-related studies and emergency medical training. By fostering leadership and service, the scholarship encourages students to follow the inspiring examples set by its namesakes.

The Frances Freer Scholarship, established by the Ashland County Community Foundation, supports Ashland County high school graduates pursuing a degree in education. Eligible applicants must be juniors or seniors in college with a minimum GPA of 3.0. This scholarship honors Frances Freer, a dedicated educator with over 35 years of experience, who aimed to empower future teachers through financial assistance, ensuring a strong educational foundation for the community.

The National Education Association's Collective Bargaining and Member Advocacy Department offers grants to support affiliates in creating student-centered initiatives through collective bargaining and advocacy. These grants aim to unite educators with communities, enhance transparency in negotiations, and advocate for students' rights, focusing on improving education funding, working conditions, and student outcomes. Affiliates can apply for funding to develop strategies that foster collaboration and promote positive learning environments.

Cumberland Community Foundation ("CCF") manages more than 60 scholarship endowment funds created by local individuals, families, civic organizations, and corporations who want to provide a path to higher education for future generations. 

Each year, Cumberland Community Foundation announces more than $1,000,000 in college scholarships to students from southeastern North Carolina.

Beth Bryan Creative Arts Fund Scholarship

Graduating senior from any high school in Cumberland County.

The 2025 Vilcek Foundation Grants aim to support nonprofit organizations that celebrate immigrant contributions to the arts and sciences. The foundation invites applications from organizations operating under U.S. IRS Section 501(c)(3) that promote diversity and inclusivity. Grants will be prioritized for new partners and those in states without prior funding. This initiative underscores the foundation's commitment to fostering appreciation for immigrant communities and their impact on society.

The ASTR Translation Prize recognizes the vital contributions of translators in theater and performance studies. It honors an exceptional English translation of works such as plays, performance texts, scholarly books, and articles published in the last calendar year. The award includes a $500 honorarium and free registration to the annual ASTR conference, promoting the importance of translations in enhancing the global theater landscape.

The CRSJ Racial Justice in Education Grant, administered by the National Education Association, aims to enhance racial equity within education by funding initiatives that promote awareness, leadership development, and solidarity among diverse racial groups. Grants typically range from $10,000 to $75,000, supporting projects that address racism and foster equitable policies in educational settings, thereby accelerating efforts towards social justice.

The Troy Foundation Quarterly Grants aim to enhance the quality of life for the Troy community by supporting charitable projects in arts, education, health, and more. Established in 1924, the foundation manages over $100 million in assets and considers grant applications that primarily benefit residents of the Troy City School District. Organizations outside this area may also apply if they significantly impact the local population, promoting a vision for a better tomorrow.

The Crabill Family Foundation, established in 2018 by Angela and Scott Crabill, focuses on enhancing the quality of life in Springfield, Ohio, through grant funding. Prioritizing tax-exempt organizations, the foundation supports initiatives in healthcare, education, housing, and the arts. While they primarily select projects through family recommendations, unsolicited proposals are also considered. The foundation does not fund individual scholarships, sponsorships, emergency relief, or political activities, ensuring alignment with their values.

The Northeast Sea Grant Consortium and NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center invite proposals to explore the interactions between fishing communities and offshore wind development in the U.S. Northeast. This initiative aims to enhance understanding of community resilience and economies, while fostering collaborative research that informs decision-making. Proposals should utilize qualitative and quantitative methods and involve at least one Co-PI from the six states of the NESGC, with a requirement for a 25% non-federal match.

NRA Sybil Ludington Women's Freedom Award

This national award is in honor of the brave woman, Sybil Ludington, who in 1777, galloped on her horse one night to rally troops against the British. Now to honor her accomplishment and the accomplishments of modern heroines, the NRA bestows the prestigious Sybil Ludington Women’s Freedom Award in her name.

The Latham Foundation for the Promotion of Humane Education, established in 1918, emphasizes humane education to foster kindness and respect for all living beings. With a focus on innovative programs for teenagers and animal-assisted activities, the foundation invites U.S. organizations, particularly nonprofits, to apply for grants. However, funding does not extend to capital projects, salaries, or conference travel. Latham aims to instill core values that promote compassion within communities and across nations.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is offering Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology to support innovative research at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Biological Sciences. These fellowships aim to cultivate expertise in both fields, enabling scientists to leverage AI for breakthroughs in biotechnology and bio-system design. The program encourages proposals that utilize existing biological data and infrastructure to enhance discovery and innovation, ultimately benefiting human lives and the U.S. economy.
