Community Engagement Grants

Community Engagement Grants support outreach, events, trainings, workshops, celebrations and other activities that serve and engage communities experiencing poverty.

What Community Engagement Grants Support

• Activities focused in at least one of the Foundation’s focus areas:
  • economic mobility
  • housing security and/or health care
• Activities serving any of South Carolina’s 46 counties.
• One-time or occasional activities that engage communities experiencing poverty. These grants are not meant to support an organization’s core programs and activities (for example, a free medical clinic’s health care services).
• Activities that are occurring within six months of the funding date.
• Activities that benefit from a small one-time funding. Grant requests can be up to $1,500.
• Organizations cannot receive both a Community Engagement Grant and a Systems Change Grant from the Foundation in the same year. That means, if your organization has received a Systems Change Grant, you cannot apply for this grant.
• Organizations can receive one Community Engagement Grant annually.

Community Engagement Grant recipients do not need to submit reports to the Foundation.

The Diminished Tree Species Grant Program focuses on restoring native tree species crucial for biodiversity and forest health. The American Honda Foundation provides programmatic support to nonprofit organizations and schools in the U.S., empowering impactful initiatives aligned with community needs. Funding opportunities are available through Honda corporate and Honda USA Foundation, focusing on projects that enhance education and community welfare. Eligible organizations must have nonprofit status or be recognized educational institutions. The application process opens each fall, with funding decisions announced the following spring, ensuring alignment with Honda's commitment to social responsibility.

The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) will award Gifted and Talented (GT) Graduate Course Program grants to institutions of higher education (IHEs) that offer tuition-free graduate courses for teachers who are pursuing either endorsement or certification in GT education. These courses will be designed for the following topics:

• Nature and Needs of Gifted and Talented Students
• Introduction to Curriculum and Instruction for Gifted and Talented Students
• Advanced Curriculum for Gifted and Talented Students
• Student Identification, Current Trends, and Issues in Gifted and Talented Education
• Social and Emotional Needs of Gifted Learners
• Special Topic Seminars in Gifted and Talented Education; and
• Other topics applicable to gifted education.

The Lowcountry Scholarship for Nontraditional Students offers financial aid up to $5,000 for eligible nontraditional students attending accredited technical colleges in South Carolina. Aimed at those in Beaufort, Colleton, Jasper, and Hampton counties, it supports individuals ineligible for most federal and state aid. Applicants must maintain a 2.5 GPA and meet specific criteria, including being a returning learner or having obtained a GED. This scholarship is renewable for up to two years, fostering educational opportunities for underserved populations.

Nature's Path's Gardens for Good program empowers communities by funding organic gardens that address food insecurity. Since 2010, it has donated $930,000 CAD to support 120 gardens. These grants, ranging up to $1 million, support various needs including construction of water sources and repairing distribution lines. This program aims to restore access to clean water in rural areas and promote environmental sustainability, thereby benefiting households and businesses affected by disasters.

The South Carolina Department of Education is offering funding through the Abstinence Until Marriage Evidence-Based Programs RFP. With approximately $546,972 available, grants will be awarded to nonprofit organizations to implement evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention programs that promote abstinence until marriage for youth aged 10-19. These programs must comply with Title V, Section 510 requirements and be certified by the National Abstinence Education Association, ensuring they adhere to the South Carolina Comprehensive Health Education Act.

The SC Bar Foundation Grant Program aims to enhance justice in South Carolina by funding legal access and education initiatives. Eligible non-profit organizations can apply for grants to provide civil legal services, law-related education, or improve justice administration. Arbor Rising Grant, established in 2010, is a NYC-based nonprofit providing unrestricted multi-year funding and capacity-building support to nonprofits focused on alleviating poverty. The grant process occurs every three years, with the next round in 2025 being invitation-only. Eligible organizations must demonstrate high potential and effective leadership, typically operating on a modest budget. Arbor Rising prioritizes applicants from the NYC metro area while expanding to cover the lower 48 US states.

The South Carolina Developmental Disabilities Council was established in 1971 by Executive Order of the Governor and was reauthorized in 2010 and again in 2015. Not less than 60% of the total Council membership is consumers and family members. Additional members come from state agencies, DD Act partners and non-governmental organizations.

The Council is federally funded under the Developmental Disabilities Act. The Council engages in activities that contribute to a coordinated, consumer and family centered and directed, comprehensive system that includes needed community services, individualized supports and other forms of assistance that promote self-determination for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

DD Council Small Grants

Small Grant Funding is awarded to evidence-based,organized activities that enhance knowledge and skills in priority areas outlined in our Five-Year State Plan, specifically Community Supports, Employment, and Self-Advocacy.

Organizations are limited to one small grant per program year, from July 1 to June 30.

The State Abstinence Until Marriage—Emerging Programs funding aims to support innovative programs that promote Sexual Risk Avoidance Education (SRAE). Designed for organizations not yet validated by evidence-based data, it encourages new outreach methods and activities in priority areas. Key criteria include a focus on local service area organizations and the use of consistent curriculum for no more than three years, ensuring unique approaches to abstinence education.

Benny and Eleanor Clark Scholarship ($2,200)

This renewable scholarship is available to the following (1) residents of South Carolina attending a Historically Black College or University that is located in South Carolina. 

The Ethnic Minorities and Women’s Internship Grant supports entry-level athletics administrative positions for one academic year, promoting diversity in NCAA Division II. It provides $30,000 for intern salaries and $3,000 for professional development, benefiting six schools annually from a total budget of $180,000. Eligible applicants must be active NCAA members, with a focus on enhancing ethnic minority and gender representation in athletics administration. This initiative encourages professional growth and compliance in diverse environments.

The Ellie and Michael Agresta Scholarship, established in 2010 by the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, supports motivated students from Hilton Head Island who demonstrate financial need. This scholarship aims to provide post-secondary educational opportunities for those who may not otherwise afford college. Eligible applicants must be high school seniors with a GPA of 2.75 or higher and plan to attend a public college or university in South Carolina. Recipients may reapply for continued support.

The Express Health Information Outreach Awards aim to enhance public health by increasing access to biomedical information for U.S. health professionals and the general public. These awards support projects that improve health information literacy among consumers and caregivers, ensuring they can effectively find and utilize health information. Focused on partnerships and outreach to underrepresented communities, the initiative seeks to promote healthy behaviors, prevent illness, and improve health outcomes through informed decision-making.
