The South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association’s awards are meant to recognize instructors and firefighters from all stages of their careers for their courageous acts of valor or outstanding leadership skills. Please note that not all awards are presented annually but on basis of merit.Fitness in Action Award

The Fitness in Action Awards are presented to fire departments –career, volunteer, and combination – that have made significant contributions in improving the wellbeing of its members. The criteria are multidimensional and include components such as safety, physical fitness, nutrition, and behavioral health. The award recognizes departments that have successfully implemented programs that promote the overall health of their firefighters.Nominee Criteria

Health and Wellness is a broad and multidimensional concept that includes many components such as: Safety, Medical, Physical Fitness, Nutrition, and Behavioral Health. For example, an individual can be very physically fit, but may be struggling with depression or be experiencing other stressors. While your program may not include all components listed above, if you can demonstrate an interactive process where your program promotes medical screenings, physical fitness, good nutrition, and/or addresses such issues as emotional health, suicide prevention, substance abuse, etc. and you have a success story of how this/these programs enhanced an individual(s) or your overall department, then we want to hear from you.

The Douglas K. Fletcher Scholarship, established by the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, aims to support students in their pursuit of higher education by providing funding for essential supplies, equipment, and textbooks. Eligible applicants must be first-generation college students residing in Beaufort, Hampton, Jasper, or Colleton counties, enrolled full-time at designated local institutions, and maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0. This scholarship fosters educational opportunities and community growth.

The Promise of the Lowcountry Scholarship, offered by the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, aims to support high school seniors from Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton, or Colleton counties with financial need. This scholarship provides opportunities for students pursuing post-secondary education at accredited institutions. With a commitment to enhancing community welfare, the foundation has invested over $125 million since its inception, fostering educational growth and empowerment in the Lowcountry region.

The Express Health Information Outreach Awards aim to enhance public health by increasing access to biomedical information for U.S. health professionals and the general public. These awards support projects that improve health information literacy among consumers and caregivers, ensuring they can effectively find and utilize health information. Focused on partnerships and outreach to underrepresented communities, the initiative seeks to promote healthy behaviors, prevent illness, and improve health outcomes through informed decision-making.

The Arts Curricular Innovation Grants (ACIG) and Distinguished Arts Program (DAP) Grants aim to enhance arts education in South Carolina. The initiative supports schools in developing arts programs that significantly boost student achievement across dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. By 2030, the goal is for 75% of students to perform at or above grade level, ensuring every student is prepared for their future endeavors.

The SC AmeriCorps Formula Grant, funded by the United Way Association of South Carolina, provides financial support ranging from $140,000 to $400,000 for organizations to enhance their service capacity through AmeriCorps Members. These members receive living allowances, education awards, and health benefits while focusing on areas such as education, economic opportunity, and disaster services. Organizations must match 24% of project costs if they are new to grant funding.

Kids' Chance of South Carolina offers educational scholarships to children whose parents have been seriously injured or killed in work-related accidents. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burdens these children face, enabling them to pursue their educational goals. Eligible applicants must be between 16-25 years old, have completed the FAFSA, and be accepted into an accredited educational program. This scholarship is vital for supporting the educational aspirations of those affected by workplace tragedies.

The Kids’ Chance of South Carolina Scholarship provides financial assistance to children of South Carolina workers who have been killed or seriously injured in work-related incidents. Ranging from $500 to $3,000, these scholarships aim to alleviate the financial hardships faced by these families, empowering students aged 16-25 to pursue post-secondary education. Eligible applicants must demonstrate financial need and be accepted or enrolled in an educational institution, ensuring support for their educational aspirations.

The Programmatic Support - Education Pillar Award by Honda aims to enhance workforce readiness in the manufacturing sector. It supports nonprofit organizations and schools focused on hands-on programs in design, software/data analytics, and AI/machine learning. Eligible applicants must be US-based and have 501(c)(3) status. The initiative prioritizes projects that train individuals for manufacturing roles, develop technical skills, and introduce automation to prepare for evolving industry demands, ultimately fostering economic prosperity in local communities.

The Environment Pillar Award by Honda supports nonprofit organizations and schools in the U.S. focused on sustainability. Grants aim to reduce environmental impact through programs in decarbonization, clean energy, and efficient resource use. Eligible projects must align with Honda's mission and primarily benefit communities where Honda associates live and work. Organizations can apply for up to two grants, provided they meet specific eligibility criteria, including tax-exempt status under the IRS.

The Honda USA Foundation's Mobility Pillar Award aims to empower individuals with disabilities by funding programs that enhance access and mobility. The foundation supports nonprofit organizations and schools that provide therapeutic, adaptive, and comprehensive care programs, as well as mobility modifications and assistive technology. Applications are accepted from U.S.-based organizations with 501(c)(3) status or fiscal sponsors, ensuring that the joy of mobility is accessible to all.

The Joseph J. Miller Foundation Grant supports diverse charitable initiatives for both Jewish and non-Jewish organizations in South Carolina. Established in 1973, this grant prioritizes local groups, especially those in Elloree, and focuses on areas including arts, education, health, and human services. Organizations must be 501(c)(3) exempt, with equal funding allocated to Jewish and non-Jewish entities. This commitment reflects a strong dedication to community development and support.

The Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship, awarded by Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, supports first and second-year medical students conducting research over 2 to 12 months. With a total funding of $7,000, students can receive reimbursement for travel expenses up to $1,000 for presenting their findings at national conferences. Eligibility requires enrollment in schools with active AΩA chapters, while those taking a year off for research or holding a PhD are ineligible.

The Delta Dental of South Carolina Oral Health Grant Program aims to enhance oral health across all ages, particularly focusing on underserved populations. The program seeks to reduce oral diseases through education and ensure access to quality dental care. Grants ranging from over $5,000 to $100,000 are available for projects that demonstrate measurable impacts on oral health, especially in rural areas. Eligible organizations include public charities and governmental entities serving South Carolinians.

The Litter Enforcement Grant, funded by PalmettoPride, has been pivotal in South Carolina for 20 years, providing up to $5,000 for equipment and resources to support litter control efforts. This competitive grant encourages law enforcement and code enforcement agencies to actively engage in litter prevention initiatives, bolstered by community support. Priority is given to groups without recent funding and those collaborating with volunteer organizations focused on litter reduction and beautification.

The California Casualty Music & Arts Grant supports K-12 public schools facing budget cuts that threaten their music and arts programs. Eligible applicants, who must be active employees of public K-12 schools and members of specified educator associations, can request grants of $250 for music or arts needs. This initiative aims to enhance creative education across the states, excluding AK, HI, MA, MI, NY, and WI. Applications received by July 15 will be notified by November 30.

The FJ Brotherton Charitable Trust Grant aims to support charitable organizations, focusing on arts, education, and social services primarily in the northeastern United States. Established in 2024, the Trust continues the legacy of the Fred J. Brotherton Charitable Foundation. It emphasizes funding for programs that assist the needy or disabled, while adhering to strict eligibility criteria, including a requirement for tax-exempt status under I.R.C. Section 501(c)(3).

Through our grantmaking, we support nonprofits that serve South Carolina at local, regional and state levels to address root causes of poverty while honoring the dignity of every South Carolinian.

Starting in 2026, our grants focus primarily on systems change in the areas of

• economic mobility,
• housing security and
• health care (with health care systems change grants by invitation only).

By focusing our efforts and going deeper on these three issues, we aim to have an even greater impact on the nonprofits and communities we serve.

Systems Change Grants

Systems Change Grants fund organizations and coalitions that are working to change the policies, power structures and mindsets that cause and reinforce poverty in South Carolina. These grants specifically fund systems change that supports economic mobility and housing security.

Through these grants, we aim to generate a larger impact through more intentional funding, highly focused work and alignment across our Foundation’s activities.

What Systems Change Grants Support

• Organizations that are actively working on systems change that impacts people experiencing poverty and addresses economic mobility or housing security. To see how the Foundation defines these terms, visit our Strategic Plan webpage.
• Organizations that are seeking to change systems at the local, regional or state level. Systems Change Grants provide up to $75,000 annually for local or regional work.
  • State-level grants have a $100,000 maximum each year. 
• Organizations addressing systems change in at least one of the following ways:
  • Participating in advocacy and lobbying
    • Focus on changing policies, practices, processes, rules or laws
    • Impacting resource flows (i.e., reallocated and/or new funding streams)
    • Holding systems accountable to their intended purpose through the above as well as through litigation
  • Addressing unequal power
    • Focus on changing the distribution and dynamics of privilege, relationships and tradition
    • Organizing and building connections and coalitions that center community voices and perspectives
    • Civic engagement
  • Affirming the dignity of people experiencing poverty
    • Focus on changing the narrative around poverty
    • Focus on changing attitudes, mindsets, values, belief systems, norms, mental models and paradigms
  • Implementing big impact, scalable, or innovative solutions
    • Focus on changing results, especially for groups experiencing inequitable outcomes as a result of historic and current marginalization

All grants are for one year, with the possibility of renewal up to three years based on meeting reporting requirements and the availability of funding.

The Delta Dental of Missouri Grant Program aims to improve oral health in Missouri by funding initiatives that reduce oral disease, enhance access to quality dental care, and raise awareness, particularly among underserved populations. Grants range from over $5,000 to $100,000 and are awarded for one year, focusing on projects that increase access to care and demonstrate matching funds from other sources.

Delta Dental of Missouri's Community Donation Program aims to enhance community health through charitable contributions, focusing on organizations that serve Missouri and South Carolina. Preference is given to those with an oral health component. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) registered, address the needs of at-risk populations, and be represented by an authorized member for support requests. This initiative underlines Delta Dental's commitment to community well-being and support.

Charlie's Heart Foundation Annual Grant Program supports small nonprofits focusing on mental well-being for families in underserved communities. Grants between $5,000-$30,000 are available, prioritizing organizations based in North Carolina. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt and demonstrate alignment with the Foundation's mission, organizational need, and program sustainability. The Foundation does not fund individuals, private foundations, or religious organizations, ensuring a strong focus on impactful community programs.

Project Lead The Way is offering a rolling grant opportunity for schools across the US to implement the PLTW Gateway program for the first time. With total funding of $9,100, the grant covers participation fees and training registration costs. Schools, including public, private, and charter, are encouraged to apply, particularly those serving low-income and minority majority populations. This initiative aims to enhance educational pathways in STEM for diverse student groups.

CSX Charitable Investments provide essential in-kind donations to nonprofit organizations focused on supporting military members and community first responders. Through intermodal transportation services, CSX offers equipment and rail services to help reduce transportation costs for eligible organizations. The program also includes occasional donations of railroad materials and equipment based on availability. CSX prioritizes support for organizations operating within its service areas, promoting community betterment and development.

The Toy Foundation Program offers a unique opportunity for nonprofit organizations to apply for toy donations to support children in need. The application period runs from January to June, with approved applicants receiving toys by the end of the year. This initiative, part of the Toy Chest program, has positively impacted over 35 million children since 2003, promoting play as essential for emotional and educational development.

Nominations for the following awards categories are accepted: The Lifetime Achievement Award, The Individual Achievement Award, The Partner in Philanthropy Award and The Advancing Equity Award.

The Advancing Equity Award

Honors an individual, credit union, business partner, or community non-profit for their commitment to the credit union industry’s 8th Cooperative Principle of DEI. This award recognizes the proactive efforts of people or organizations who cultivate belonging for all through fair and equitable policies, products, programs, and initiatives that enhance the well-being of employees, members, and/or surrounding communities. This award seeks to encourage those who, through committing time and resources to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, live out the cooperative principle to engage everyone in governance, management and representation.
