Dr. John Halligan Scholarship Fund

This is a scholarship fund established for students in pursuit of a medical career.

Dr. John Halligan graduated from The United States Military Academy at West Point in 1985 and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences with an MD. After completing his residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of Washington, Dr. Halligan served in the US Army as a Radiation Oncologist until his retirement as a Colonel in 2008. After retiring from the military, Dr. Halligan fulfilled a decades-long dream and moved to Alaska to become the Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Providence Alaska Medical Center. He has since expanded state-of-the-art cancer care in Alaska by opening Radiation Oncology Clinics in Soldotna, Juneau, and the MatSu Valley so Alaskans could receive care closer to their homes.

The MLK Commission Scholarship Fund, managed by the San Antonio Area Foundation, supports current high school seniors from Bexar County who aspire to pursue higher education. This renewable scholarship is available for full-time or part-time undergraduate studies at accredited institutions in the U.S. Applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 and demonstrate residency and citizenship requirements. The fund aims to empower youth and enhance community growth through educational opportunities.

Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors. Applications are accepted from mid-November until mid-March. Scholarship award recipients will be announced at the high school awards ceremony. 

Mariano and Maria Lampazzi Fiaschi Memorial Scholarship

Established by Colonel Peter Fiaschi in memory of his parents, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating student from Susquehanna Community School District who intends to pursue a major in healthcare. The scholarship provides financial support for up to four years of college, contingent upon the recipient maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0 and remaining in good standing within an accredited healthcare program.

The Harry H. Hirshik Scholarship supports Alaskan students pursuing education or training in the field of automotive mechanics. Harry H. Hirshik was military-civil employee-mechanic. He lived in Eagle River and loved Alaska.

The Jimmy and Ethel Harper Scholarship Fund, administered by the San Antonio Area Foundation, supports students pursuing any area of study in the USA. Eligible applicants include full-time high school seniors, college students, and graduate students from Bexar County, who demonstrate good citizenship and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. Holly Dick Scholarship Fund

This scholarship fund was created by Holly Dick who learned from her own life experiences how education can change lives.

The Holly Dick Scholarship will provide eligible students with an educational scholarship to support the pursuit of post-high school education, including vocational training that will give them a future career. Scholarships will be awarded based on academic performance, community activities, letters of reference, and leadership activities with a preference for Chinese American students who are the first generation in their family to attend college or Chinese Alaskan students. Students must be enrolled full-time to qualify for a scholarship.

Holly WaiHung Dick left mainland China with her family in 1947 for a better life in Hong Kong. Her life experiences taught her that education changes lives. After completing school in China, Holly was hired by Japan Airlines, where she met her future husband, an American, Mike Dick. Holly and Mike lived in Anchorage, where they loved to fish and enjoy friends, family, and their Alaskan life. Holly loved to help others along their path in life. She volunteered as a translator for immigrants and helped children in daycare settings. 

This scholarship is her legacy fulfilling her hope to help Chinese students increase their experience and skills with education so they can find a job and a career to support their future.

The G. Scott Ransom Scholarship Fund, established by Team Duluth and the Duluth/Superior Alpine Club, supports youth athletes aged 5 to 19 in Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin. This scholarship, honoring Coach Scott "Race" Ransom, helps cover team fee costs for competitive skiing experiences. By participating, young athletes not only enhance their skiing skills but also gain valuable life skills for future success. Award amounts vary based on individual needs.

The Jean Y. and Robert W. Fish Memorial Scholarship Fund, managed by the San Antonio Area Foundation, offers financial support to high school seniors from Bexar County pursuing higher education. This renewable scholarship covers tuition, fees, and books for students enrolled full-time in accredited colleges or universities. Applicants must demonstrate good citizenship and financial need, with a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 for renewal. Since 1964, this fund has helped many students achieve their educational goals.

The Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program aims to expedite the integration of scientific discoveries into effective health interventions. By providing essential infrastructure and support to academic medical centers, the program fosters innovative research approaches that enhance translational science. The Collaborative and Innovative Acceleration Award under this initiative seeks to promote partnerships that accelerate the development of new treatments, ultimately improving health outcomes for diverse populations.

Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program

Program Overview:

Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian (LB21) projects build a library and archival workforce that can meet the information needs of communities and increase the institutional capacity of libraries, archives, and library and information science graduate programs across the country.  

The program supports projects that:  

• provide training and professional development to library and archives professionals;  
• develop faculty and information leaders; and 
• recruit, educate, and retain the next generation of library and archives professionals. 

Projects can support the recruitment, education, training, and retention of pre-professionals, students, faculty, and the current library and archives workforce.

The Phoebe Apperson Hearst Awards honor excellence in family engagement by recognizing PTAs that achieve top rankings through the National PTA School of Excellence program. These awards celebrate PTAs that effectively engage families in student success and school improvement initiatives. Literary Arts Fund

Grants Overview

The Literary Arts Fund will award at least $50 million in grants to the nonprofit literary arts field over the next five years, concluding in 2031.

With a short timeline, the fund’s grantmaking has a strategic focus on the areas of the literary arts ecosystem where it determined it could have the greatest impact— that is: supporting independent U.S.-based literary arts nonprofits whose primary mission is directly serving adult writers of creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and hybrid works in making their artistic work and sharing it with readers outside of school and academic settings. Innovation project grants provide funding to literary arts nonprofits for projects that may be collaborative and that aim to address critical challenges in one or more literary arts nonprofit organizations, presses, or publications that, if improved, would directly benefit creative writers’ artistic work and ability to share it with readers and audiences. Health Education Scholarships

One of the many keys to maintaining a healthy, prosperous community is ensuring a sustainable supply of excellent health care providers. To achieve this, Samaritan Health Services offers numerous scholarships to local students pursuing careers as doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, as well continuing education or specialty training for current medical providers.

Each year, Samaritan awards more than $25,000 in scholarships for health care education to ensure the communities we serve receive the best care possible well into the future.

Virginia Welch Scholarship

Each year the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Auxiliary awards the Virginia Welch Scholarship to students planning to pursue a career in a medically-related field. The scholarship is named in honor of Virginia Welch, a head nurse who became Good Samaritan’s administrator in 1951 and served until 1967. To date, more than $320,000 has been awarded to students pursuing a career in health care.

High school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in, or accepted to, a program to pursue a career in a medically-related field in a hospital setting are eligible to apply.
