Nurses Educational Funds, Inc. depends solely on donations to advance our only mission, to promote nursing leadership through annual scholarship support for professional nurses seeking masters and doctoral degrees in nursing education, practice, research, and administration.

NEF’s only purpose is to provide nursing scholarship assistance to make graduate level nursing education possible. NEF is one of the largest, national, private, professionally endorsed source of funds for advanced nursing study with over one hundred years of service to and for professional nursing. NEF is a non-profit organization with 501(c) status.

Susan Bowar-Ferres Scholarship

Created in 2023, the Susan Bowar-Ferres Scholarship is devoted to nursing leadership in the Magnet Recognition Program which recognizes health-care organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Consumers rely on Magnet designation as the ultimate credential for high quality nursing.

The scholarship is given to a Master’s or Doctoral student demonstrating leadership in aspiring to achieve or continuing to achieve Magnet designation, such as being a Magnet Program Director/Coordinator, a leader of or actively involved as a member of their quality council, clinical indicator council or similar quality improvement program.

Susan Bowar-Ferres, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, is an Emeritus NEF Board Member who has dedicated many years of service to the NEF Board of Directors, as President of NEF as well as Chair of the Bylaws Committee. A nursing administrator in multiple health care service organizations spanning 50 years, Dr. Bowar-Ferres has devoted more than three decades of her professional career to the Magnet Recognition Program, serving as an appraiser, team leader and team member. Under her leadership as the Chief Nursing Officer, NYU Langone Medical Center earned two successive Magnet designations. Her dedication to the Magnet Program is ongoing. Dr. Bowar-Ferres is dedicated to excellence in practice and all that Magnet recognition means. The Susan Bowar-Ferres Scholar shares these values and aspirations.

Community Foundation of Randolph County

Our mission is to bring people and resources together to strengthen the quality of life, both now and in the future, for the residents of Randolph County.

The Community Foundation’s work falls into three major categories: grant-making, donor service, and community convening. Our most visible activities are the grants and scholarships we award each year. Most of these awards come from income earned from permanently endowed funds. Scholarships and other grants come from funds that donors have established for specific purposes.

Rickert-Shierling Educational Scholarship Fund

The Fund was established to provide scholarships to students who meet the following qualifications: A resident of Randolph County, Indiana, any age seeking higher education, post-secondary education, or adult education, in pursuit of a certificate, diploma or academic degree. Preference will be given to a student with a desire to learn more about human sexuality and/or secular humanism. In the event there is an applicant who desires to study another field on a quest to learn, assuming all other qualifications are met, the monies from the fund can be utilized.

The Philip D. Raso Scholarship, established in 2016 by the Ann G. & James B. Ritchie Foundation, supports graduate nursing students pursuing master's and doctoral degrees. To qualify, applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.6, hold a current RN license, and have at least two semesters of study remaining. This scholarship honors Philip Raso's legacy and promotes nursing leadership through financial assistance for advanced education.

Generally the Community Foundation's scholarships are awarded to applicants who have high financial need. Applicants with household income exceeding $100,000 are less likely to be awarded, but applying will allow you to be considered for targeted scholarships.

Paul Collins Scholarship

Open to undergraduate students who are residents of Kent County who will study visual or performing arts and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing, New York Alumnae Association/Sylvia Barker Scholarship Fund

In 2025 the Alumni Association of the Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing in New York established a scholarship fund honoring Sylvia Barker. This scholarship is to be awarded to a master's or doctoral nursing student who exhibits exceptional and innovative "pediatric" nursing care and/or administrative services for children. Sylvia Barker graduated in 1936, from The Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing. She was the epitome of the words engraved on the school’s pin given at graduation, Vota Vita Nostra; “Our Live Dedicated/Devoted”.

Sylvia Barker served for many years at Mount Sinai as a Pediatric Nurse, Pediatric Supervisor, and a Pediatric Nursing Instructor. In the 1930’s when wheelchairs were made of wood. Sylvia Barker initiated “seat belts” for the children to keep them safe.

Sylvia also earned a baccalaureate and master's degree from Columbia University School of Nursing and was a recipient of the R. Louise McManus Medal, for her outstanding leadership in nursing which is the highest honor of the Nursing Education Alumni Association. She was active in the New York State Nurses Association, Nurses House, and the Alumnae Association of The Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing.

When the Board of Directors of the Alumnae Association decided to recognize and award their nurse graduates for outstanding nursing achievement, Sylvia Barker was the first recipient of “The Distinguished Alumna Award” in 1990.

Willa Spangler Grosse Scholarship

Eligibility

One or more scholarships for Raleigh County high school graduates with a satisfactory academic record; Pursuing a nursing career.

The Erin Wilson McMahon Memorial Scholarship, offered by the San Antonio Area Foundation, supports students from Bexar County pursuing higher education outside Texas. Eligible applicants include high school seniors and current college students seeking a Bachelor's or technical degree. The scholarship aims to foster educational growth and community development. With awards limited to one student, recipients can utilize funds for tuition, fees, and other educational expenses, promoting academic achievement and leadership.

The Community Foundation of South Central Wisconsin Community Grant aims to strengthen local communities by inspiring philanthropy and supporting area nonprofits. This not-for-profit organization facilitates the establishment of charitable funds, allowing individual gifts to grow into named endowments. With an average grant amount between $500 and $1,000, the foundation addresses future community needs and enhances the quality of life for residents in Adams, Columbia, Iowa, Juneau, Richland, Sauk, and Vernon counties.

Ryan Mondy D.A.S.H. Memorial Scholarship

Provides scholarships to graduating seniors whose lives have been affected by cancer.

The Emo Jean Cottrell Scholarship Fund, administered by the San Antonio Area Foundation, supports students pursuing various degrees, including Associate, Bachelor's, and vocational certificates. Open to high school seniors, current college students, and adult learners in the USA, it encourages academic excellence with a minimum GPA requirement of 2.5. This renewable scholarship, available for up to three years, aims to enhance educational opportunities and foster community growth, reflecting the foundation's commitment to improving lives in San Antonio.

Lloyd Crossman Scholarship (2025)

This funding opportunity aims to enhance the participation of older adults in the Senior Nutrition Program by focusing on preventative health initiatives. The Iron River Lions Club Marie Larson Scholarship Fund offers $2,000 to graduating high school seniors from public or private schools in the Iron River area. Established by Marie Larson, this fund supports students pursuing higher education, with its origins tracing back to a golf tournament begun in 2008. The scholarship honors Larson's legacy and her commitment to the community, encouraging local youth to achieve their educational goals.

The Lawrence E. and Mabel Jackson Rudberg Scholarship Fund supports graduating seniors from Two Harbors Senior High School and Duluth area high schools. This scholarship, established by educators Lawrence and Mabel Rudberg, aims to promote access to higher education. Eligible students must demonstrate financial need and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Awards can reach up to $20,000 over four years, helping students achieve their college aspirations.

The Northern Wisconsin Teacher Education Scholarship Fund supports students from the Chequamegon Bay area pursuing education degrees at Northland College. Created by anonymous donors committed to education, this scholarship offers $1,500 per year for up to one year. Eligible applicants must be graduates of specific high schools or long-term residents in the area, demonstrate financial need, and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. This initiative helps foster the next generation of educators in northern Wisconsin.

The Northwoods Educational Opportunities Fund offers financial aid to high school seniors and graduates from Mercer and Chequamegon (Park Falls) schools, as well as residents of the Town of Sherman. Awards can reach up to $20,000 over four years. Eligible applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and demonstrate financial need, community service, and leadership engagement. This initiative aims to support students in pursuing vocational or post-secondary educational programs.

The Riley Burnell Criminal Justice Memorial Scholarship Fund provides financial support to a Koochiching County resident pursuing a career in criminal justice. Established in memory of Riley Burnell, this scholarship awards $2,500 for one year to students demonstrating financial need and maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Eligible applicants must show good citizenship and community involvement while aiming for fields such as law enforcement, conservation, or border patrol.

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Janesville Chapter Scholarship is aimed at students from Edgerton, Evansville, and Janesville high schools, among others. This scholarship encourages academic excellence and commitment to chosen fields of study, with consideration for financial need. Managed by The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, it supports local students in their pursuit of education, enhancing their quality of life within the community.

The George & Harriet Christopherson Scholarship, offered by The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, supports students from Janesville Charter Schools, Craig High School, and Parker High School. To be eligible, students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and plan to attend a technical school. This scholarship is part of a larger effort to enhance the quality of life in Southern Wisconsin through educational funding.

Beckley Area Foundation

Beckley Area Foundation was established in January 1985 by ten community-minded citizens. It began with a gift of $1.1 million from the Dr. Thomas Walker Memorial Health Foundation as “seed” money for this Raleigh County project. BAF assets have grown to over $70 million with over 500 different funds managed by our three trustee banks. Today, Beckley Area Foundation is one of West Virginia’s largest community foundations.

Since its inception, BAF has distributed over $23 million to charities and other worthy projects in the fields of education, public recreation, health & human services, the arts, animal services and beautification.

Most of these scholarships must be awarded to students from our geographic area or at least preference given to such students. While the majority of scholarships benefit Raleigh County applicants there are others designated for Fayette, Summers, Webster, and Wyoming students. 

Louisa Holton Morris Music Scholarship

Music studies with preference to those specializing in organ music; Weighted for need and merit; West Virginia resident with preference to Raleigh County.​

This scholarship is renewable.

The Janesville Women’s Club Association Scholarship, managed by The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, supports students from local charter schools and high schools in Janesville. This scholarship aims to assist graduates pursuing post-secondary education, with a preference for those demonstrating academic excellence or financial need. The foundation oversees over 700 charitable funds, enhancing the quality of life in Southern Wisconsin through grants and scholarships.
