This FOA is intended for proposals related to basic and applied research in the STEM categories, and not related to the development of a specific system or hardware procurement.The proposal submission process has two stages:I. Applicants are encouraged to submit a white paper first to Grants@NPS.edu, ; andII. Applicants must submit a full proposal through Grants.gov (do not submit white papers through Grants.gov, only full proposals)Applicants are encouraged to submit a White Paper in advance of a Full Proposal to minimize the labor and other costs associated with the production of detailed full proposals that have little chance of being selected for funding. Based on an assessment of the white papers, the responsible Research Program Officer will provide informal feedback notification to the prospective awardees to encourage or discourage submission proposals. The Research Program Officer may also, on occasion, provide feedback encouraging re-work to strengthen a proposal. White Papers may be submitted at any time during the open period of this FOA. A separate White Paper is required for each research proposal.

Scholarship eligibility requires students to attend an accredited 2 or 4 year public or private institution of higher learning. All scholarships are for full-time students, unless otherwise noted. Renewable awards are for 4 years of undergraduate study and cannot be used for post graduate coursework; all awards are paid directly to the school or may be used for book reimbursement.

Thomas S. Ritter Memorial Scholarship Fund

The purpose of this scholarship fund is to assist students who are attending or plan to attend a college or university and who have demonstrated a strong work ethic both inside and outside of the classroom.

W.R. "Bill" Asplund Scholarship

W.R. “Bill” Asplund (1932-2022) was a well-loved teacher in the Science Department at Wenatchee High School (WHS) from 1963 through 1987. He was a mentor to many students, instilling an appreciation for chemistry, scientific curiosity, and the natural world. He also introduced many to the outdoors as an advisor to the WHS Alpine Club, and later as an outdoor sports retailer in Wenatchee.

His childhood was harsh; he was homeless for a time. This gave him a life-long appreciation for those who helped him become a teacher and an advocate for wilderness conservation.

Native Forward awards are allocated based on the financial aid information provided by the institution’s Financial Aid Office. Awards can vary, ranging from $100 to $30,000 per academic year.

Native Forward Scholars Fund members of federally and state-recognized Tribes as well as first and second-generation descendants. However, Native Forward Scholars Fund scholarship opportunities have different Tribal eligibility requirements and can be determined by submitting a Tribal Eligibility Certificate.

NextEra Energy (NEE) Foundation Scholarship

The purpose of the NextEra Energy (NEE) Foundation scholarship, in partnership with NextEra Energy Foundation, is to provide financial assistance to eligible American Indian and Alaska Native undergraduate and graduate students enrolled full-time at an accredited institution and pursuing degrees with a focus in environment, energy, cultural sustainability, or a major in a STEM or STEM-related discipline. Native American students pursuing degrees that prepare them for the renewable energy workforce are encouraged to apply. 

This program will award 16 scholarships in the amount of $5,000 per academic year. This opportunity is a need-based award.

Female high school seniors pursuing STEM or medical majors at accredited nonprofit colleges or vocational schools can apply for the Erie County Community Foundation’s Zonta Club of Greater Sandusky High School STEM Scholarship Fund. Residents of Erie, Huron, or Ottawa County, Ohio may benefit, including those interested in STEM education pathways similar to Oregon-focused opportunities.

Oregon American Indian and Alaska Native students in STEM fields can access funding through Native Forward Scholars Fund for need-based undergraduate, graduate, and professional study. Awards range from US $100 - US $30,000 per academic year for full-time students at accredited institutions pursuing science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and related disciplines, with Tribal affiliation documentation required.

Erie County, PA high school seniors pursuing post-secondary studies in science, math, business, art, or music can access funding through the Dr. Alice M. Hudder–Richard T. Molder Post-Secondary Scholarship Fund. This need-based scholarship from Erie Community Foundation supports students with a 3.0+ GPA who demonstrate strong work ethic and commitment to education.

High school seniors planning to study STEM at a U.S. college, university, or technical school can receive US $10,000 for higher education costs. AIAA Foundation and Club for the Future support resilient students, including those facing disabilities, socioeconomic challenges, or first-generation status; Oregon STEM-focused students meeting these criteria may be strong candidates.

AAUW branches and state organizations in Oregon designing or running hands-on STEM programs for girls in grades K–12 can apply for funding up to US $10,000. American Association of University Women supports projects that build STEM skills and confidence, foster STEM identity, offer college and career preparation, and connect girls with women STEM mentors.

Whirlpool Corporation, in conjunction with One Energy LLC, created a scholarship fund at Marion Community Foundation in 2017 to support education in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). For each wind turbine installed as part of a Wind for Industry® project, Whirlpool/One Energy scholarship partners are giving back to the community with scholarships. These scholarships will impact Marion County high school seniors and graduates pursuing studies in STEM fields.

Annually, this scholarship fund awards one $5,000 scholarship to a student attending any eligible educational institution. An additional $10,000 in scholarships is available to students attending The Ohio State University at Marion, Marion Technical College, or other eligible educational institutions.
