CDC Foundation

The CDC Foundation helps the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the public health system save and improve lives by unleashing the power of partnerships to protect the health, safety and security of all communities, everywhere. The CDC Foundation is authorized by Congress to mobilize philanthropic partners, corporations, organizations and individuals to support the critical health protection mission of CDC and the public health system.

The CDC Foundation manages hundreds of programs each year aimed at protecting communities across the country from a variety of health threats—from chronic disease conditions including cardiovascular disease and cancer, to infectious diseases like malaria and HIV to emergency responses, such as Ebola and Zika.

Contractor for Implementation and Evaluation of Healthy Native Babies Project Materials

This RFP request proposals from Tribes, Tribal Serving Organizations (TSOs) and Urban Indian Organizations (UIOs) [T/TSOs/UIOs] to implement and evaluate the updated Healthy Native Babies Project (HNBP) materials within their service areas. This initiative aims to strengthen culturally relevant infant safe sleep education, increase community awareness and support Native families in reducing sleep related infant deaths. Selected T/TSOs/UIOs will adapt, disseminate and assess the use of HNBP materials in ways that reflect the cultural, linguistic and community-specific needs of the Native populations they serve. 

This project is a rapid turnaround project to support T/TSOs/UIOs in:

• Implementing HNBP materials in clinical, community, and family setting
• Training staff and community partners
• Evaluating reach, effectiveness, and community feedback
• Identifying barriers, facilitators, lessons learned, and best practices for future replication

Liesel M. Hiemenz Scholarship

This permanent scholarship was established in memory of Ms. Hiemenz, a nurse from Germany. Preference is given to applicants interested in public health.

This funding opportunity aims to bolster the cancer surveillance workforce through educational initiatives. By enhancing collaborations with cancer partners and developing tools for improved data quality, this program will expand the capacity of registrars. Efforts will focus on recruitment and retention, ultimately ensuring compliance with Public Law 102-515. Strengthening the cancer registrar workforce will lead to timely and accurate cancer data submission, supporting public health objectives.

The NIH is announcing a funding opportunity for competitive revisions of ongoing grants to tackle unforeseen public health crises. This Urgent Competitive Revision program aims to facilitate timely responses to emerging health challenges. Once the Notice of Funding Opportunity is published, eligible applications will be directly routed to the appropriate NIH awarding component. Only submissions in response to an Urgent Guide Notice published by an NIH Institute or Center will be accepted.

The CORE Funding: Lilly Research Grant aims to advance research on genetic hearing loss. It invites investigators to explore the genetic factors contributing to hearing loss, promoting innovative projects that enhance understanding in this critical area. The American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery Foundation supports studies on prevention, diagnosis, treatment, outcomes, or pathophysiology of head and neck neoplastic disease through this trainee pilot research award.

Researchers and institutions conducting thyroid cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, outcomes, or pathophysiology studies in Delaware can access funding through the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery Foundation. Grants from this CORE program provide US $10,000 to support basic, translational, or clinical research in otolaryngology, epidemiology, and public health.

Delaware research institutions and clinical teams focused on public health and oncology can seek funding for head and neck cancer translational and epidemiologic studies using emerging technologies. Focused on epidemiology and public health, the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery Foundation offers US $15,000 awards through the AHNS Presidential CORE Funding program.

American Indian and Alaska Native graduate students in public health or environmental science across the U.S., including Delaware, can receive need-based tuition support through this scholarship. With a mission to advance Indigenous scholars, Native Forward Scholars Fund provides US $100 - US $30,000 per year for full-time study at accredited institutions.

Nonprofits, schools, and government agencies working on public health and community well-being in Delaware and other eligible regions can seek $2,500 - $49,999 for larger initiatives. Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation’s Thriving Community Impact Fund backs programs improving physical, mental, and social health, poverty and economic stability, and neighborhood and built environments.

Nonprofits, schools, and government agencies working on public and community health initiatives can apply for up to US $2,499 to support programs that improve well-being. With a mission to strengthen community health, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation provides flexible support for efforts in physical and mental health, poverty, economic stability, and neighborhood environments, including work benefiting Delaware residents.

NIH provides Delaware public health and clinical research organizations with funding to study integrated management of chronic pain and opioid use disorder across health systems. This U2C center grant will support implementation-effectiveness trials, network coordination, capacity building, and development of resources to scale and sustain evidence-based CP and OUD care in diverse settings, including Delaware.

Public health and biomedical research institutions in Delaware can seek funding to conduct studies in aerospace medicine, human performance, occupational and environmental health, and epidemiology. Focused on operational medical solutions, the Dept. of the Air Force, Materiel Command invites white papers under the CHEERS program that may benefit organizations working on population health and preventive medicine.

Master’s students in school-based health education programs at accredited U.S. or territorial colleges, including those serving Delaware, can receive funding for their studies through this public health-focused scholarship. Society of Health and Physical Educators provides a US $1,000 Barbara A. Cooley Master’s Scholarship, usable for any purpose, plus a one-year complimentary student membership.

Delaware public health and health education programs can access funding through the Society of Health and Physical Educators’ Bill Kane Undergraduate Scholarship, which provides US $1,000 to support undergraduates in school-based health education. Full-time students at accredited U.S. colleges or universities, including territories, with strong GPAs may be eligible.

Health systems and research institutions in Delaware and nationwide working on chronic pain and opioid use disorder integration can apply for funding to develop and test system-level care models. US Dept. of Health & Human Services: National Institutes of Health supports studies on collaborative care, implementation strategies, and sustainable delivery of integrated CP/OUD services.

With a mission to strengthen antibiotic resistance surveillance, the FDA provides Delaware public health and epidemiology programs with funding to enhance monitoring of drug-resistant bacteria in retail food specimens. Eligible entities in Delaware and other U.S. jurisdictions can apply for up to US $200,000 to expand NARMS sampling sites and improve detection capacity.

Nonprofit hospitals and health institutions focused on healthcare access, public health, or medical and surgical research can apply for project support from the E S Prentiss Foundation, including organizations in Delaware. Grants may fund capital improvements, equipment, rare drugs, direct care programs, and improved hospital management, with commitments up to five years and preference for private-sector, direct-care projects.

Public interest legal service organizations addressing opioid use disorder in Delaware can apply for Equal Justice Works’ Opioid Crisis Response Program Fellowship to host an Attorney Fellow providing free civil legal aid. Fellows serve two-year terms, helping remove legal barriers to treatment, housing, benefits, and wraparound services in underserved, OUD-affected communities.

State and local governments, federally recognized Tribes, and nonprofits in eligible rural Colonias can obtain USDA: Rural Development support to build safe drinking water, waste disposal, and storm-water systems. With a mission to improve rural health, USDA: Rural Development provides funding that may benefit Delaware public health efforts in qualifying communities; matching funds are usually required.

Focused on public health infrastructure, USDA Rural Development invites Delaware tribal governments, local governments, and nonprofits to improve drinking water and waste systems in eligible rural and Tribal areas. Funding can support construction of basic water, wastewater, and storm-water drainage facilities where at least half of residents are Tribal members facing health risks.

Public health and epidemiology research institutions in Delaware studying non-communicable and chronic disease disparities can access funding through the National Institutes of Health. This program supports multi-disciplinary, collaborative research on clinical epidemiology, health policies, and measurement validation in Latin America and among U.S. Hispanics/Latinos, requiring at least one PI or MPI from a Latin American institution.

Sunshine Award

AHCJ’s Right-to-Know Committee established the Sunshine Award at Health Journalism 2026 as a way to elevate the work of journalists like STAT’s Bob Herman who fight for government transparency. We plan to continue this tradition annually from now on. Award winners receive free registration and a one-night hotel stay for our annual conference, a free year of AHCJ membership, a trophy and a certificate.

AHCJ U.S. Health System Reporting Fellowship

This opportunity is for U.S.-based journalists.

Issues with the U.S. health care system are often obvious — from large swaths of uninsured residents and junk insurance plans, to high maternal mortality rates and preventable medical errors. But what is at the root of issues like these? What could an equitable health care system look like? 

Through the U.S. Health System Reporting Fellowship, supported by The Commonwealth Fund, you can pursue a significant reporting project related to the U.S. health care system at the local, regional and/or national level.

This fellowship allows mid-career journalists to maintain their regular employment while working on a major project over a 12-month calendar year. You’ll pursue the projects with the support of your newsrooms or arranged outlets, which commit to publish or air the work.

We believe that issues of health equity impact every facet of the health care system, which is why we’re specifically interested in projects focused on health equity. This might include racial disparities within a community, gaps in public health inclusion, unstable housing, insurance access, food insecurity, violence as a health issue, how health care institutions or systems are applying a racial equity lens to their policies and practices or otherwise addressing inequities or disparities, or other examinations of systemic problems that have become so apparent over the last few years.

Guidance is provided by AHCJ mentors through customized seminars on health care systems, conference calls and email consultations. The fellowship covers the cost of attending the seminars and the annual AHCJ conference, as well as a $2,500 project allowance to defray the cost of field reporting, health data analysis and other project-related research. In addition, you will receive a $5,000 fellowship award upon the successful completion of the project.

The CDC has announced funding for FY 2027 to enhance state capacity in alcohol epidemiology and prevent excessive alcohol use through the NOFO CDC-RFA-DP-27-0072. This initiative aims to equip states with essential tools and knowledge for effective public health measures against excessive alcohol use, a major preventable cause of death in the U.S. The program will also provide expert technical assistance and training on effective prevention strategies over a 5-year performance period.
