Veteran-serving 501(c)(3) nonprofits in the District of Columbia can seek program or general operating support for military and veterans services, arts access, medical research, or environmental initiatives. Cornelia T Bailey Foundation supports projects that align with its mission, beginning with a required letter of inquiry for organizations active in its current service regions.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations serving children in need and military members, veterans, or their families in the District of Columbia can seek project-focused funding to support mission-aligned services. Overview

The Mayor’s Office on Volunteerism and Partnerships – ServeDC (ServeDC), is the DC Commission on National and Community Service as such ServeDC provides oversight and support to applicants selected as sub-grantees. Oversight includes monitoring and programmatic site visits, fiscal monitoring, and reporting requirements. Support includes AmeriCorps trainings, program director meetings, and one-on-one technical assistance.

ServeDC was established by an Executive Order in 2000 and is housed in the Office of Community Affairs in the Executive Office of the Mayor. ServeDC is the District of Columbia Government agency dedicated to promoting service as an innovative, sustainable solution to the challenges we face as a community and a nation. ServeDC engages District communities by building partnerships and organizational capacity, serving as the local lead for national volunteer and service initiatives, and providing and promoting meaningful service opportunities throughout the year. This application applies to Single State applicants operating only in the District of Columbia.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations in the District of Columbia working in health, hunger, or support for everyday heroes, including military and veterans services, can apply for local connection grants up to US $2,500. The Wawa Foundation provides these small financial awards on an ongoing basis while annual budgeted funds remain available.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations in the District of Columbia can apply for Wawa Foundation financial grants supporting health, hunger relief, and everyday heroes, including military, veterans, first responders, and at-risk youth. Awards over US $2,500 are available during quarterly application windows for programs serving communities within Wawa’s market areas.

Veteran-serving 501(c)(3) nonprofits in the District of Columbia can seek funding to expand veterans assistance services and service dog programs. AmeriCorps Agency

ServeDC receives federal funding from AmeriCorps to support National Service programs in the District of Columbia, including the AmeriCorps State program. The mission of AmeriCorps is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic participation through service and volunteering. Through AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and the Volunteer Generation Fund, AmeriCorps has helped to engage millions of citizens in meeting community and national challenges through service and volunteer action.

AmeriCorps grants are awarded to eligible organizations (see Eligible Applicants) proposing to engage AmeriCorps members in evidence-based interventions to strengthen communities. An AmeriCorps member is an individual who engages in community service through an approved national service position. Members may receive a living allowance and other benefits while serving. Upon successful completion of their service, members earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award from the National Service Trust that members can use to pay for higher education expenses or apply to qualified student loans. 

AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps is a National Service program funded by the federal government. Locally, ServeDC supports the AmeriCorps State program in Washington, DC. AmeriCorps projects address a combination of the national service priorities, meet critical needs of our nation, achieve national service goals, and address community problems. These include disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, and veterans and military families. Within these focus areas programs may submit proposals that address specific problems of local communities. Full-time members who complete their service earn an Eli Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to pay for college, graduate school, or to pay back qualified student loans. Members who serve part-time receive a partial Award. Some AmeriCorps members may also receive a modest living allowance during their term of service.

U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofits focused on military and veteran services or STEM education can seek community investment funding for programs in the District of Columbia and other eligible counties. With a mission to strengthen military families and inspire future STEM talent, BAE Systems provides charitable support to well-managed, highly rated organizations.

Veteran-serving 501(c)(3) nonprofits, schools, religious institutions, and government agencies in the District of Columbia can use this funding for program costs and related staff time. The Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville’s MartinConnects Fund Grant awards US $2,000 - US $8,000 for work in veterans’ services, homelessness, STEM, and women and children.

Nonprofit organizations supporting U.S. military personnel, veterans, and their families in the District of Columbia can seek program funding, including family support and related services. With a mission to back education, health care, humanitarian services, and military family assistance, Gratis Foundation provides 501(c)(3) organizations with competitive grants on a rotating, program-area schedule.

District of Columbia veterans and military family service nonprofits can access funding through MGM Resorts Foundation for one-year programs serving individuals and families. Grants prioritize services such as affordable housing, workforce development, family support, food insecurity, health and wellness, homelessness, senior services, and veterans and military family programs in regions where MGM Resorts employees live and work.

Nonprofit organizations serving service members and veterans in the District of Columbia can benefit from a matching gift when a recent Regions Bank retiree donates, with awards up to US $1,000. With a mission to strengthen community prosperity, Regions Bank supports organizations in its footprint through this program, which matches eligible monetary contributions of $25 or more.

Veteran- and first responder-serving nonprofits in the District of Columbia can seek support for wellness, rehabilitation, and recovery programs, including mental health services and physical therapy. Focused on military and veterans services, the Bob Woodruff Foundation backs evidence-based programs that improve resilience, strength, and overall quality of life for those who have served and their families.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations addressing food access, homelessness, or military and veterans services in the District of Columbia and other eligible communities can seek program support through the SpartanNash Foundation. Grants from SpartanNash Foundation help organizations near its stores and facilities advance local “Hunger, Heroes and Hope” initiatives serving their communities.

District of Columbia military and veteran service nonprofits, first responder agencies, schools, and government entities can access in-kind transportation and railroad equipment support through CSX Foundation. Organizations serving veterans or community first responders within the CSX service network may be eligible for intermodal freight moves or donated railroad-related materials and supplies.

Veteran-serving 501(c) or 170(c) nonprofits in the District of Columbia can receive extra support when Regions Bank full-time associates or recent retirees make eligible donations. Focus areas include service members and veterans, financial wellness, education and workforce readiness, and community development. Gifts are matched for organizations within the Regions footprint.

Veteran- and military-serving nonprofits, first responder agencies, schools, and eligible government entities in the District of Columbia can seek CSX Foundation Pride in Service grants to support safety, mental health, community cohesion, workforce development, and basic needs. Awards of US $2,500 - US $25,000 may benefit organizations advancing military and veterans services in CSX’s service network.

Veteran-serving and other charitable or educational nonprofits in the District of Columbia can seek funding for education enrichment, veteran support, and low-income community services. Grants from Employees Community Fund Of The Boeing Company help organizations working with veterans and their families, youth, and housing needs in the broader Potomac Region, including nearby Maryland and Virginia communities.

The Lundbeck US Charitable Fund focuses on enhancing brain health through sponsorships that support various initiatives. These sponsorships are available to both non-profit and for-profit organizations, provided they align with Lundbeck's mission. South Dakota American Legion Scholarship

To provide financial support to South Dakota high school graduates that are children or grandchildren of United States veterans.

This scholarship is funded through voluntary contributions from legion posts, private individuals, and businesses. It is designated to provide educational opportunities beyond high school to eligible veterans, their children, and their grandchildren.

Since 1980, the Northern New York Community Foundation has awarded more than $28 million in scholarships to students from Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.

10th Mountain Division (Light) Scholarship

The Fort Drum Chapter of the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division has established the 10th Mountain Division (Light) Scholarship for active or former 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) members or family members — spouse or child — of an active or former 10th Mountain Division (LI) soldier. The applicant or their military sponsor must also be a member of the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division. Membership information is available from the Association. Scholarship applicants may live anywhere and be in any year of full-time undergraduate study.

Rotary Purple Heart Scholarship

The Community Foundation administers the Rotary Purple Heart Scholarship. This is available to Jefferson, Lewis or St. Lawrence County residents who were awarded a Purple Heart by the U.S. armed forces or are a dependent — spouse or child, or grandchild — of a U.S. military member or veteran who was awarded the Purple Heart. Purple Heart Scholarship applications are reviewed throughout the year until all available funds for the academic year are awarded.

Richard D. Pell Future Veterans Award

The Richard D. Pell Future Veterans Award is awarded to each graduating senior entering any branch of the American Armed Forces following graduation.

A monetary gift card will be awarded to each graduating senior residing in the town of Ripley and entering any branch of the United States Armed Forces following graduation.
