The mission of the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice (DMPSJ) is to provide direction, guidance, support, and coordination to the District’s public safety agencies to develop and lead interagency public safety initiatives to improve the quality of life in the District’s neighborhoods.

Safe and Secure DC Nonprofit Fund

The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice (DMPSJ) is in year two of managing the Safe and Secure DC Nonprofit Fund. This program is designed to enhance the security and safety at the physical site(s) of a nonprofit organization located in the District of Columbia. The grant will improve and increase the physical/cyber security and facility/target hardening of nonprofit organizations’ facilities at risk of a terrorist of other extremist attack, safeguarding the lives and property of District residents and visitors.

The Rotary Foundation of Washington DC, established in 1922, focuses on charitable works and community support. Celebrating its 102nd year, it offers Special Project Grants of $20,000 to fund impactful projects that foster sustainability and engage Rotary members in local volunteer efforts. Eligible non-profit organizations can apply for these grants, while general operating costs are not supported. The Dunkin' Joyful Spaces Grant supports children's hospitals and community health centers in creating joyful environments for pediatric patients. L3Harris Technologies is collaborating with Project Lead The Way (PLTW) to expand STEM education for PreK-12 students. This initiative aims to inspire young learners through enhanced PLTW programs starting in the 2025-2026 academic year. Eligible schools, including public and charter institutions in specified counties, can receive grants of $5,000 to support program expansion. The focus is on providing resources for new modules, teacher training, and ensuring access for diverse and economically challenged communities.

The NCAA Division II Degree Completion Award provides financial assistance to student-athletes who have exhausted their athletics eligibility, enabling them to complete their first undergraduate degree. Since its inception in 2001, nearly $9 million has supported approximately 1,875 athletes, with a remarkable 90 percent graduation rate among recipients. The award covers tuition costs up to $15,000 for remaining credits and may be used in the summer term or short terms surrounding the final undergraduate year.

The Art Exhibition (Curatorial) Grant Program supports District resident curators in developing visual art exhibitions. This competitive grant provides funding and exhibition space in CAH's galleries and virtual platform. Two proposals will be selected for FY23 exhibitions, with installation and deinstallation scheduled in early 2023. Eligible applicants must be experienced curators residing in the District, while individuals and organizations not meeting these criteria are ineligible. This initiative aims to promote innovative and educational art presentations.

The EDA Philadelphia FY 2016–FY 2019 Planning Program and Local Technical Assistance Program aims to enhance regional economic development by providing grants for creating and implementing Comprehensive Economic Development Strategies (CEDS). This initiative supports eligible organizations, including Indian Tribes and District Organizations, to develop plans that foster economic prosperity and job retention in distressed areas. The Day-End Dough-Nation® Program by Panera Bread exemplifies community generosity through the donation of unsold bakery products to local charities. This impactful initiative supports various organizations that distribute food to those in need, including shelters, health centers, and youth programs. By partnering with thousands of non-profits nationwide, Panera Bread not only reduces food waste but also plays a crucial role in addressing hunger and promoting equality within communities.

The Paul E. Sluby, Sr. Historic Burial Grounds Preservation Program Grant RFA aims to protect and restore historic burial grounds in Washington, DC, particularly those significant to African American history, established before 1955. With only four intact burial sites remaining, the program encourages applicants to propose activities starting in Fall 2025 to document, research, and enhance these culturally important locations, ensuring their preservation for future generations.

The California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant aims to support public middle and high school sports programs facing funding challenges due to budget cuts. Established by California Casualty, this grant provides financial assistance for purchasing equipment and covering travel costs for competitions. Eligible applicants must be active employees of public schools and members of affiliated education associations. Awards cannot be used for individual student recognition or fundraising projects.

We want to help ensure that the United States remains a global thought leader in all forms of science, math, and technology by promoting projects which encourage, enhance and advance STEM education in this country and to promote projects which provide career opportunities for individuals with STEM education backgrounds.

The Foundation, formed in 2022, seeks to give students and educators more resources for developing and participating in STEM-based, hands-on learning. As a Foundation, we want to support STEM education programs that are making a difference for students regardless of their background or resources. We want every student in America to have enough exposure to STEM from an early age and to transform our attitudes around STEM subjects. We are working towards changing the narrative that promotes STEM subjects as challenging and difficult to the idea that a broad knowledge of STEM education is imperative for socioeconomic and economic freedom as an adult, for all.

We will support Innovative Environmental Projects (IEPs) that utilize interdisciplinary research to identify and address critical environmental problems with cutting-edge, innovative solutions that are scalable and replicable.

Scientific Research

Contribute to advancements in biomedical research and innovation to accelerate the progress in medical research and drug treatment development - specifically for high-mortality, under-funded areas of need such as pancreatic and colon cancers.

Urban & Community Entrepreneurship

Advancing entrepreneurship in moderate-income and underserved communities to help business leaders of today and tomorrow prosper. The focus of this program is to help foster economic empowerment by investing in organizations focusing on one individual, one job, and one business at a time.

The Tree Campus Higher Education Program, initiated by the Arbor Day Foundation, encourages colleges and universities to cultivate community forests while promoting environmental stewardship. By meeting five essential standards, campuses can achieve recognition for their efforts in tree care, community engagement, and sustainability. This program not only beautifies educational spaces but also enhances mental health and reduces energy consumption, ultimately fostering a healthier planet for future generations.
