Research Focus

The purpose of this announcement is to stimulate research activities that study the impact of daily vitamin use on the improvement of cognitive function and any associated health care cost impacts on populations over the age of 65.

Funding Information

Grant Categories

Applications in response to this FOA must align to a grant category to pursue the area of focus from the Research Focus section of this FOA.   

The grant categories are: 1) Consortium Grant; 2) Standard Grant; 3) Pilot Grant; 4) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Grant

Grant Categories: Standard Grant

Research projects that are fully developed, scientifically rigorous, and include sound background information, hypotheses, and promising preliminary results or supporting data. Organizations choosing to submit more than one Standard Grant application may have no more than three applications.

The Sea Turtle Grants Program, funded by Florida's Sea Turtle Specialty License Plate sales, supports vital research, conservation, and educational initiatives for Florida's marine turtles. The program allocates 30% of license plate revenue to grant applications, with a maximum of four submissions per organization. Priority is given to projects that enhance the preservation of marine turtles and align with recovery plans and the Marine Turtle Protection Program's goals.

Southern SARE offers Graduate Student Grants to support Master’s and PhD students engaged in sustainable agriculture research. This initiative encourages impactful research across various topics, including production, marketing, and social sciences. By providing funding opportunities, Southern SARE aims to foster the next generation of researchers committed to advancing sustainable agricultural practices throughout the Southern region.

The Southern SARE: Professional Development Grants support educational initiatives for agricultural professionals, enhancing outreach and training efforts directly benefiting farmers and ranchers. These grants fund diverse training activities, including workshops and farm tours, aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture through effective participatory methods. Projects are encouraged to involve multi-disciplinary partnerships and the participation of land-grant institutions, ensuring a comprehensive approach to agricultural education. Priority is given to projects with budgets under $80,000, fostering a broad array of impactful initiatives.

South Arts, Inc. is offering Accessibility Grants of up to $2,500 to nonprofit organizations in the Southeast to enhance accessibility in arts programs for individuals with disabilities. The grants aim to foster inclusivity by supporting projects that engage disabled artists and audiences. Organizations must be located within the South Arts Service region and focus on the arts. Priority will be given to new applicants and those serving BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities, with a commitment to rural areas.

Annual Service Leadership Grants

The Florida Kiwanis Foundation is honored to support the Florida District of Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs with annual grants for leadership and development training. Please find below information for state administrators.

The Florida Kiwanis Foundation Grants Committee shall review Grant Request and Funding Requests for the next fiscal year annually from the District of Florida Service Leadership Programs.

• The purpose of these funds aligns with the Florida Kiwanis Foundation objectives to support leadership development through support of Kiwanis Service Leadership programs.
• The Grant Request Form is to be completed by the District of Florida Service Leadership Program Administrator on the appropriate Grant Request Form provided by our Executive Director.
• After completion of the form, the administrator will submit the form to our Foundation Office for distribution to the Grant Committee Chair and Grants Committee.
• The Grant Committee Chair and Grants Committee will ensure the current Grant Request Form aligns with the previously presented Funding Request Form projecting required funding for their project and/or program from each Service Leadership Program. Funding Requests Forms are completed by the District of Florida Service Leadership Program Administrators to assist the Florida Kiwanis Foundation assess the projects needs of each program for the next fiscal year. This is a critical element of the Foundation’s budget planning process.

Annual Service Leadership grants vary based on the funding requests submitted by the Service Leadership Program administrators.

The J. Larry Landers Student Research Award, offered by the Gopher Tortoise Council, provides funding for undergraduate and graduate students conducting research on gopher tortoise biology or upland habitat conservation. With an average award of $1,000, applicants must submit a four-page proposal, including project details and a budget. This grant aims to support original student-led research within the southeastern U.S., where the gopher tortoise is native, thus promoting vital ecological studies.

The William and Helen Thomas Charitable Trust provides funding to nonprofit organizations focused on education, environmental protection, medical research, and support for the underprivileged. This trust, based in Florida, primarily serves communities in Palm Beach, Martin, and St. Lucie Counties, along with select areas in Appalachia. It seeks to assist public charities classified under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, ensuring support for impactful charitable initiatives.

Emergency Grants

The Emergency Grant program is new to the Foundation, established during the 2011-2012 administrative year but based on an older concept that was applied during the time of Hurricane Charley.

The Foundation contributes to the Emergency Fund each year and funds are also collected from private donations designated for “emergency fund” through the year.

In the case of an emergency disaster somewhere in the Florida District of Kiwanis, the Foundation President and the District Governor will meet to confirm the existence of an emergency disaster and then formally declare select areas of the District as a Disaster Area and that funds are available from the Florida Kiwanis Foundation.

Emergency Grant requests shall be sent by club letterhead to the Foundation Office. Maximum requests for funds shall be $2,000.00. Funds will be available until the existing fund is depleted.

The Emergency funds need not be matched by the club and do not need to be for capital improvements. Expenditures for food, clothing, temporary comfort, both physical and emotional are acceptable.

Matching Grants

The Matching Grant Program requires a formal application from a Kiwanis club or a division from within the Florida District. The current maximum grant allowed is $10,000. This is to allow the greatest distribution of our limited funds. A club or division is only eligible for a grant every 5 years. The funds must be used for capital improvement. The club or division contribution to the project must equal or exceed that of the grant.

The Matching Grants applications are approved in two separate cycles. Cycle I cutoff is December 15 so that the Grant Committee has time to review the applications in time for the mid-winter board meeting (usually held in February). Cycle II cutoff date is June 15 so that the Grant Committee has time to review the applications in time for the DCON Board Meeting (usually in August).

Although it is not a requirement for a club to have contributed to the Foundation Annual Gift program, or have Foundation Sustaining Members on its roster, preference is given to those clubs and divisions that have shown a history of support for the Foundation.

Grants should be used to assist a Florida Kiwanis Club or Division with a project that contributes to the achievement of the Objects of Kiwanis International, specifically, a project that enhances the lives of young children and youth in their community, in accordance with the mission of the Florida Kiwanis Foundation.

Mini Grants

The Mini Grant program is new and the concept was approved by the Foundation’s Board of Directors during the 2011-2012 administrative year.

The Mini Grant program is less formal than the Matching Grant program and is on a first come first served basis until the funds are exhausted. The Foundation President will make a determination as to the acceptability of any Mini-Grant application, and if approved, funds will be processed immediately.

There is a simple one-page application form for the Mini Grant and the maximum request is $750.00. The amount does not need to be matched by the club nor does the request need to cover capital expenses.

The program was created for assistance to small clubs with little resources. Priority for these awards is given to the smaller clubs, of 35 members or less, with limited service budgets.

• Mini Grants can be used to assist a Kiwanis club within the Florida District of Kiwanis with a project that supports Aktion Clubs, CKI Clubs, Key Clubs, K-Kids, and Builders (Service Leadership Programs).

SLP Mini-Grants

The purposes of a Service Leadership Programs Mini Grant is to award grants to support Aktion Clubs, Builders Club, Key Clubs, K-Kids Club, and Circle K Clubs or division service projects.

Grants are awarded to a Florida Aktion Club, Builders Club, Key Club, K-Kids Club, and Circle K Club or division by use of the official application form that is provided by division trustees or available on the Foundation website.

The SLP Mini Grant program is less formal than the Matching Grant program and is on a first come first served basis until the funds are exhausted.

Grants must be used to assist a Florida Service Leadership Program Club or Division projects. 

The FFLA Administration of Justice Grant Program aims to enhance the effectiveness of court operations through funding innovative legal service projects. Open to not-for-profit organizations, the program supports initiatives that improve legal access, public education on the law, and pro bono efforts. Past grantees have developed facilities for child witnesses and trained law enforcement on mental health issues. Grants vary in amount and are typically awarded for one to two years, encouraging matching funding to maximize impact.

Save A Club Grant

The “Save A Club” Grant, established through a generous legacy gift from Florida Kiwanis Foundation Board Member Steve Arrington, is designed to help strengthen and revitalize existing Kiwanis clubs throughout the Florida District.

This special grant program supports new service projects that engage the community, attract potential members, and renew enthusiasm within existing clubs. The goal is to help clubs reimagine their impact, build meaningful partnerships, and inspire long-term growth through service.

Save A Club Grants should be used to assist a Kiwanis club within the Florida District with a service project that contributes to the achievement of the Objects of Kiwanis International, specifically, a project that enhances the lives of young children and youth in their community, in accordance with the mission of the Florida Kiwanis Foundation. 

The FFLA: Children's Legal Services grant supports legal assistance for needy children in Florida, focusing on areas such as foster care, health benefits, and educational needs. Established by the Florida Bar Foundation in the 1990s, this program encourages local collaboration and matching funds. Grants range from $25,000 to $200,000, aiming to engage private attorneys in pro bono services. Applications for the 2024-25 cycle open from April 1-26.

The Wil and Rachel Blechman Grant, established by the Florida Kiwanis Foundation, focuses on enhancing the development of children aged 0-5 years in Florida. Grants support various initiatives, including scholarships for educators, educational seminars, reading programs, and resources for families in low-income areas. By fostering early childhood development and community engagement, the foundation aims to create a lasting impact on the lives of young children and their families.

There are three opportunities for this grant: Kiwanis Clubs/Divisions; Service Leadership Programs: Builders Club, Key Clubs and Circle K Clubs; and Service Leadership Programs of Aktion Club.

Kiwanis

The David and Donna Batelaan Fund will be utilized for grants or special programs to support leadership development for young people with physical disabilities; and to encourage participation and inclusion for young people with physical disabilities in current KIWANIS programs, activities or service to others.

Grants may be made to initiate a project, including a major change, addition, or renovation to a project for young people with physical disabilities. Funds to sustain the functioning of a project on an on-going basis must be provided by a club or division. 

The Southern Equality Research Grant, offered by the Campaign for Southern Equality, aims to empower students and early career researchers to conduct crucial studies on LGBTQ+ issues in the South. With over a third of LGBTQ+ Americans residing in this region, there is a significant need for research to address legal protections and social inequities. This initiative seeks to elevate the voices and experiences of LGBTQ+ Southerners, fostering a deeper understanding of the policies affecting their lives.

The Florida's Future Forests Program Grant supports landowners in establishing and maintaining healthy forests in Florida. Through cost-share payments, the program encourages approved forest management practices, including site preparation, seedling purchase, and planting. Administered by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, it aims to enhance forest acreage while ensuring sustainable ecosystem management. The grant funding, capped at $118,387.50 per agreement, is crucial for promoting effective tree establishment practices to combat environmental challenges.

The Volunteer Fire Assistance Grants (FL) program offers essential financial and technical support to rural fire departments serving communities with populations of 10,000 or less. This initiative aims to enhance firefighting capabilities and safety through funding that must be matched by non-federal dollars. Eligible departments can use the funds for training and necessary equipment, with a focus on benefiting the rural population. Grants are available for one year following approval, facilitating ongoing support for rural fire protection.

J. Walker Field Scholarship

This is a one time $1000 scholarship given to graduating Key Club members who exemplify the spirit of Kiwanis through service. In 2012, the Florida Kiwanis Foundation Board of Trustees created the J. Walker Field Scholarship in honor of the man who was accredited with the formation of the Florida Kiwanis Foundation. The Foundation began in 1971 when, the then Florida District of Kiwanis Governor, J. Walker Field, suggested this was a necessary thing to provide backing for his beloved Key Clubs.

He insisted that Ralph Davis be the driving force behind the formation and appointed him president until the foundation was approved by Kiwanis International, inc., and bylaws were established that would provide for elected officers. Since few people knew of the existence of the Foundation, J. Walker Field let it be known that he wanted to serve as president once his year as governor was over. His wish was granted and he became the first elected president of the Foundation in September 1972.

Through the generosity of 2014-15 Florida Kiwanis District Governor Charles Gugliuzza, the Florida Kiwanis Foundation is offering a $1,000 scholarship to an exceptional CKI Student. This scholarship is dedicated to his wife, Emilia Gugliuzza for her tireless efforts in helping to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus and her support of family, friends, and Kiwanis.

The Florida Legal Aid Disaster Relief Initiative, funded by the Florida Bar Foundation Inc, provides emergency financial support for organizations offering civil legal aid to communities impacted by disasters like hurricanes and the COVID-19 pandemic. This initiative aims to assist low-income Floridians in need of legal services during such crises. Grant amounts vary based on available funding, and applicants must be non-profit entities with specific operational requirements.
