What is the typical amount and duration of grant awards?

The Foundation does not have fixed minimum or maximum award limits, though grant awards typically fall in the range of $100,000 to $250,000. The Foundation makes both one-year and multi-year grant awards. 

Funding Priorities

We focus our grantmaking in a way that honors our founders’ intent and operates in alignment with our mission, vision, and values – to center our work on ensuring all people experience what is possible.

We understand that improving life for all requires an interconnected approach. Therefore, through our grantmaking we seek to increase economic opportunities of all, with an intentional focus on communities of color, those not earning a livable wage, and families experiencing poverty. Kansas City’s community needs will guide us as we work together to create stronger partnerships with communities, nonprofit partners, and foundation colleagues, in order to increase opportunities for all to succeed.

We believe that as we expand our reach and increase our impact through new, strengthened, and reimagined partnerships within our three impact areas, we will help build a community where an improved quality of life is equitable and enjoyable by all.

• To ensure that greater Kansas City’s regional assets, cultural organizations, and sense of community make it a thriving and inclusive place to live.

• To support families through organizations and initiatives that take a holistic approach to reducing poverty and increasing equity and well-being.

Growing Minds: Creating strong educational foundation for life

• We prioritize investments that improve outcomes and access to quality programming for children and their families in education.
• Grantmaking focuses on Pre-K, K-12, post-secondary, and wrap-around support services, in addition to out-of-classroom initiatives that address barriers to education and provide additional academic support.

Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation 

The Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation is a private foundation established by Muriel Irene Kauffman in 1987 with a vision toward communities in which the arts flourish.

The Foundation’s mission is to support organizations and programs that enhance the quality and accessibility of the arts in the greater Kansas City community.

The Foundation provides significant annual funding for the Kansas City Symphony, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, the Kansas City Ballet, and the Harriman-Jewell Series, which were appropriated by Mrs. Kauffman in 1994 when she established $1 million endowments for each organization. Other significant grantees include the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, UMKC Conservatory of Music, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, ArtsKC – Regional Arts Council and the Kansas City Art Institute. Examples of some of the smaller grantees to which annual funding is provided include The Coterie Theatre, Owen/Cox Dance Group, Kansas City Chorale, Charlotte Street Foundation, and Youth Symphony of Kansas City.

Healthy For Life Cycle

Our Healthy for Life Cycle supports strategies that proactively improve health and wellness by fostering transformational change in individual and community behaviors, with a particular focus on disparities in under resourced communities.  The ideal grant in this category would address at least one identified social determinant of health and holistically impact mind, body and spirit. Successful grant applications include programs or projects which remove barriers to self-actualization and often reflect different types of social entrepreneurship.

In this cycle, we provide seed money to early-stage and/or innovative strategies to develop impact and supporting data necessary to draw other philanthropic and/or governmental resources as the strategies mature.  Healthy for Life grants serve as a limited term source of financial support for the creation and initial establishment of such proactive initiatives.  Organizations who are interested in applying in our Healthy for Life Cycle should contact our Program Officer, Kim Lewis, to schedule a preliminary conversation.

The Helen S Boylan Foundation

The mission of the Helen S. Boylan Foundation is to enhance the quality of life in our communities of Carthage, Missouri, the Greater Kansas City Area, and Lindale, Texas. We actively distribute quarterly grants to local non-profit organizations serving arts & education, women & children, health & wellness and the beautification of our communities.

The Helen S. Boylan Foundation is a private family foundation established in 1982 to continue the family tradition of commitment to enhancing the quality of life of the community through grants to qualified charitable organizations. The Ash Grove Charitable Foundation makes grants annually to support the work of public charities with tax exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code in the geographical markets that we serve.

As one of the largest cement companies in the United States and one of the oldest still in operation, Ash Grove plays an important part in the foundation and infrastructure of our country. Funding Priorities

The Foundation awards grants to charitable, educational, and scientific organizations, which are public charities.

The Foundation gives primary consideration to capital building and renovation projects for the following funding priorities:

Funding

The Foundation’s goal is to provide significant support to public charities for capital building and renovation projects. Grants for these projects generally are limited to $25,000. Consideration is also given to program grant requests. Grants for these projects are generally limited to $5,000.

Jewish Community Cycle

Our Jewish Community cycle includes grants for the following:

• Health focused grants programs which promote short-term and long-term physical or mental health. This category also includes healthcare-related social services. Examples include: nutrition counseling and food assistance, health education, medication assistance, social work services, support for providers of physical or mental health services. MHF maintains specific sources of funding set aside for health focused programs.
• Programs which foster or maintain a vibrant Jewish community. Examples include: Jewish education programs, transportation to Jewish communal social activities, initiatives focused on Jewish persons age 33 and younger, efforts that promote a literate and educated Jewish community, programs that serve older adults.
• Core support for organizations in the Jewish Community (maximum grant request of $10,000). Applicants for core support may not submit program grant requests.

Program Grants: In order to determine the appropriate grant request amount, our Program Officer will contact you to schedule a site visit and discuss your grant. In prior years, grantees had to contact MHF, but we expect this to simplify our process.

Sunset Grant

We have reorganized our structure, processes, and grantmaking to strongly support our 2035 vision, and we recognize that some grantees may no longer directly align with our strategic priorities. We offer one-time Sunset Grant opportunities to help long-term grantees transition to new funding sources or bring closure to projects that are ending.

Capacity Building Grant

Capacity Building grants are designed to strengthen the organizational capacity of nonprofits by fostering sound leadership, strong boards, professional development for staff, technology, evaluation, strategic planning, communications, and sustainability.

Rather than funding a charity’s specific program or singular service, Capacity Building grants look for opportunities to support an organization’s focus on internal effectiveness and long-term stability. These one-time, short-term grants will be awarded to charities that demonstrate a specific capacity gap and who are aligned with our strategic priorities and focus areas.

Innovation in Healthcare

The Patterson Family Foundation invites creative proposals aimed at improving healthcare in rural communities. We’re looking to fund projects that explore new ideas with the potential for long-term impact and better health outcomes. While all innovative solutions are welcome, priority will be given to proposals focused on testing new models to expand maternal care in rural areas.

Project CriteriaKC CAN! targets projects from 501(c)(3) organizations that align with our mission to support initiatives that create long term solutions towards improving the lives of Kansas City’s children, with an emphasis on projects related to meeting basic needs, education and wellness, as well as the objectives below. Projects are evaluated on their overall merit and as a result are not necessarily required to match all objectives:

• Addresses a clear, identified area of need.
• May otherwise go unaddressed through normal means, such as an organization’s operations budget or capital campaign.
• Opportunities for professional capabilities and volunteer effort that we can provide through the Executive and Advisory Boards.
• Involves a financial commitment that can be fully funded from the annual KC CAN! budget for the year in which the project is executed.
• Can be encapsulated into a defined project that is less than a year in duration, with a target of 3-6 months from inception to completion.
• Provides ongoing, long-term benefit.

Mader Foundation Grant

The Edward G. and Kathryn E. Mader Foundation funds programs that support children in Greater Kansas City.

The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation has granted more than $4 billion to nonprofit organizations in Kansas City and beyond throughout its history. But we cannot take all the credit. The vast majority of our grants are driven by our donors. These are individuals, families and companies making grants from their funds to the organizations and causes that are important to them.

Black Community Fund

Established as a fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation in 1983, the Black Community Fund (BCF) has been investing in the African American community in Greater Kansas City for over 40 years. BCF grants provide support to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations focusing on enhancing the socio-economic aspects of the African American community in the Greater Kansas City Metro area. 

Sisters' Circle Fund - Greater Kansas City

Established in 2016, the Sisters’ Circle's mission is to increase charitable giving within African American communities to benefit African American communities in the Greater Kansas City area. Annually, the Sister’s Circle Fund provides grants to nonprofit organizations who work with intention to improve the quality of life, or provide services of significant value to the Kansas City region’s African American communities.

About Us

The SkillBuilders Fund was created in 1983 by the late Marjorie Powell Allen, a civic leader and philanthropist, who championed women’s causes and education, as well as many other community-building activities.

The SkillBuilders Fund is committed to preparing women and girls for a future that honors their individual potential. Our goal is to support organizations that are aware of the barriers that keep women and girls from achieving their full potential and design programs that will systematically improve women and girls’ lives.

Funding Priorities

This private foundation is especially interested in innovative means to help women and girls gain self-sufficiency, build their capacity to function in our society, and become responsible citizens. SkillBuilders Fund funds projects that exclusively serve women and girls in the Kansas City region. The Fund favors projects that provide educational opportunities, build entrepreneurial skills, and cultivate and foster women and girls’ leadership. Proposals from new as well as traditional organizations will be considered.

Funding

Grants will typically range from $20,000 – $50,000 and may on rare occasion exceed $50,000. Multi-year grants will not be considered.

Our grantmaking will be aligned to our strategic priorities and focus areas, driving toward our goal of equitable economic mobility for Kansas Citians.

Collective Impact Grant

Collective Impact Grants are designed for a coalition of high-capacity organizations to drive systems-level impact and change in the Kansas City region in alignment with Kauffman’s priorities.

The coalition must be led by a single organization that is a trusted convener and experienced intermediary. The coalition can be existing or emerging. We are especially interested in proposals related to two key focus areas – education and employer connection and equitable access – across our three strategic priority areas.

Planning Grant (Step 1)

Planning Grants are accessible through our application portal and are designed to fund nine months of planning for the Collective Impact implementation proposal.

The Planning Grants application should show how these organizations will collaborate to implement a systems-change strategy. The application should demonstrate significant potential to narrow the economic mobility gap in the greater Kansas City area over multiple years.

Planning grant requests can be up to $500,000. The grant funding is intended to be managed by an intermediary that is leading the Collective Impact effort. We anticipate that the intermediary will submit a budget that reflects the time and resources needed for key coalition members involved in the planning process.

 Implementation Grant (Step 2)

Intermediaries who receive a planning grant may be considered for a three-year or longer implementation grant. Planning grant recipients will be invited to apply for implementation grants if they submit a comprehensive systems-change plan. An invitation to apply will not be an indication of funding.

We also give priority to projects that have high leveraging potential in terms of expansion and/or replication, and projects that will provide ongoing value past the grant year.

Research Grant

Research grants provide funding to design and implement or scale a research project that builds deeper understanding of our strategic priorities, addresses gaps in our research, and translates research findings into practice. Research plays a vital role in helping to dismantle systemic barriers and achieve our 2035 strategic vision.Strategic priorities

In 2024, the Deluxe Foundation introduced a new grant strategy to foster diverse and inclusive environments by harnessing the collective power of employee resource groups (ERGs) to create authentic, community-led impact. Their insight into specific issues can ensure that grant funding is directed to deserving initiatives that are meaningful to ERG members, employees and the commuities in which we live and work.

Each of Deluxe’s 10 ERGs will identify and establish a partnership with a nonprofit organization working on social issues relevant to their cause, and award one $25k general operating grant to the selected nonprofit organization.

The Curry Family Foundation intends to assist local not-for-profit organizations in their efforts to improve the lives of endangered children and other disadvantaged persons, to promote cultural enrichment, and to provide educational opportunities.

Project Grant

Project Grants provide funding for an organization to design and implement, or scale a multiyear project that will drive impact across our strategic priorities while prioritizing the neighborhoods with the highest potential to close economic mobility gaps in the Kansas City region. Project Grants should center on our focus areas that unlock learner potential or clear the path through education and employer connection, essential competencies and skills, equitable access, or participation and belonging.
