What is the typical amount and duration of grant awards?

The Foundation does not have fixed minimum or maximum award limits, though grant awards typically fall in the range of $100,000 to $250,000. The Foundation makes both one-year and multi-year grant awards.

ABOUT REACH

The REACH Healthcare Foundation is a charitable foundation dedicated to improving health coverage and access to quality, affordable health care for uninsured and medically underserved people. The foundation maintains a regional focus, with a six-county service area that encompasses Allen, Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas, and Cass, Jackson and Lafayette counties in Missouri.

Historically, REACH has focused its community investments in areas including primary medical care, mental health, oral health, and health policy and advocacy. Our current funding priorities are outlined within a community investment framework, which describes the foundation’s three outcomes areas:

• Bridge the Coverage Divide,
• Close the Health Equity Gap 
• Strengthen the Safety Net

Each outcome area aligns with the foundation’s commitment to achieving equitable health outcomes throughout our six-county service area. These outcome areas, and the strategies within each, guide our work, partnerships and where we invest.

To maximize our resources, the foundation directs its grantmaking primarily toward strategies within three outcome areas. REACH staff is available to meet and discuss on an individual basis.

Collaborations

Collaborative efforts are eligible to apply provided the applicant organization meets the Foundation’s eligibility criteria and is exempt under Section 501(c)(3).

Since its inception, the Foundation, which is still led by Lester T. Sunderland's descendants, has focused on supporting construction projects, awarding grants to nonprofits in the Kansas City region and other markets traditionally served by the Ash Grove Cement Company. 

 The Foundation prefers to make grants for construction and special interest projects rather than for annual operating expenses. 

Grants for planning, design, construction, renovation, repairs and restoration of facilities are considered. Areas of interest include higher education, youth serving agencies, health facilities, community buildings, museums, civic projects and energy efficient affordable housing projects sponsored by qualified tax-exempt organizations. 

Funding Areas

In recent grant cycles, the Board of Trustees has awarded the majority of grants in four broadly defined areas:

Higher Education

In 2022, the Foundation awarded $49 million to more than 35 educational organizations. Grantees included community colleges, private colleges, and public universities.

Human Services

The Foundation awarded $30 million to human service nonprofits in 2022, and many grants in this area went to groups that provide essential services to youth and families. Grantees included a range of youth-focused groups, including Reconciliation Services, the Nebraska Youth Justice Initiative in Omaha, Nebraska and the Sno-Valley Senior Center in Carnation, Washington. 

Arts and Culture

Arts and culture projects received $23 million in 2022, including grants to the Springfield Art Museum in Springfield, Missouri, the Omaha Zoo and the Seattle Aquarium in Seattle, Washington. Health Care and Hospitals.

Health Care and Hospitals

This is a growing area of need in many communities the Foundation serves. In 2022, $65 million was awarded to hospitals and health-care groups to build and improve their facilities.

Fund Description

The Northland Community Foundation (NCF), an affiliate of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, seeks to improve the quality of life in the Northland by increasing charitable giving, connecting donors to community needs they care about and providing leadership on critical community issues. By using an RFP approach, NCF aims to solicit the best thinking of nonprofit organizations, public sector agencies, research institutions, and other entities serving Clay and Platte counties.

Grant Focus

NCF released a Community Needs Assessment in March 2023. Following a rigorous research process in partnership with several organizations and entities in the Northland, the completed Community Needs Assessment pinpoints gaps in the community ecosystem, and identifies opportunities where investments of philanthropic dollars will have the greatest potential to make measurable differences in the community which are: 

• Mental and behavioral health.
• Growing needs of a rapidly expanding senior population.
• Limited availability of childcare/early childhood education.
• Limited transportation access/infrastructure.

NCF continues to build on the opportunities identified in its 2023 Community Needs Assessment to invest philanthropic dollars in the community’s areas of greatest need. The RFP will focus on sustaining current programs that focus on the well-being of children in Clay and Platte Counties.

The Ash Grove Charitable Foundation makes grants annually to support the work of public charities with tax exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code in the geographical markets that we serve.

As one of the largest cement companies in the United States and one of the oldest still in operation, Ash Grove plays an important part in the foundation and infrastructure of our country. And with plants from coast to coast, being a good neighbor in the communities in which we live and serve is a priority and part of our DNA.

Ash Grove territory is a lot of ground to cover. We believe in active participation to improve the existing and future quality of life in the communities we serve. This participation includes financial support to charitable activities. We aren’t just focused on building highways and buildings – we are also helping to build better communities.

The Foundation awards grants to charitable, educational, and scientific organizations, which are public charities.

The Foundation gives primary consideration to capital building and renovation projects for the following funding priorities:

Funding

The Foundation’s goal is to provide significant support to public charities for capital building and renovation projects. Grants for these projects generally are limited to $25,000. Consideration is also given to program grant requests. Grants for these projects are generally limited to $5,000.

Healthy For Life Cycle

Our Healthy for Life Cycle supports strategies that proactively improve health and wellness by fostering transformational change in individual and community behaviors, with a particular focus on disparities in under resourced communities.  The ideal grant in this category would address at least one identified social determinant of health and holistically impact mind, body and spirit. Successful grant applications include programs or projects which remove barriers to self-actualization and often reflect different types of social entrepreneurship.

In this cycle, we provide seed money to early-stage and/or innovative strategies to develop impact and supporting data necessary to draw other philanthropic and/or governmental resources as the strategies mature.  Healthy for Life grants serve as a limited term source of financial support for the creation and initial establishment of such proactive initiatives.  Organizations who are interested in applying in our Healthy for Life Cycle should contact our Program Officer, Kim Lewis, to schedule a preliminary conversation.

What is Zero KC?

Zero KC is Kansas City's framework for ending homelessness, driven by the Office of Unhoused Solutions (OUS). As part of the national Built for Zero initiative, Kansas City is one of many communities collaborating to reach “functional zero,” where homelessness is rare, brief, and non-recurring. Zero KC is focused on long-term solutions that stabilize the housing crisis.

Through Zero KC, the City of Kansas City partners with agencies to offer both immediate shelter options and programs that focus on long-term housing solutions. To achieve this, the City is calling on local service providers to expand their efforts and apply for grants that will enable them to deliver specialized, low-barrier services for people who may have been traditionally underserved in existing shelter systems.

The City is specifically looking for proposals that aim to:

• Expand specialized services for groups who face additional barriers to housing, including those with mental health needs, substance use disorders, LGBTQ+ individuals, and others with low-barrier access requirements.
• Promote innovation in how services are delivered, making it easier for people to access the help they need without unnecessary obstacles.
• Foster collaboration among agencies to create a more connected and responsive support network.

The City invites agencies, nonprofits, and other service providers to apply for these grants and collaborate on building a system that ensures all Kansas Citians, regardless of their circumstances, have access to safe and dignified shelter. These grants are a critical part of Kansas City’s mission to make meaningful progress in reducing homelessness and supporting long-term housing stability.

The Zero KC Grant

The Zero KC Grant is an innovative funding opportunity designed to transform how our community addresses homelessness. Unlike traditional grants that support individual programs or organizations, this initiative seeks to build a cohesive, functional system by aligning the efforts of local organizations. Area agencies serving people experiencing homelessness are invited to apply, not just for funding, but to collaborate in creating an interconnected network of services. From outreach and transportation to treatment and permanent housing, the goal is to map applicants’ capabilities and strategically fund those who can contribute to a complete, effective system. Agencies must be open to partnership and flexible in working collaboratively with others to address gaps and achieve a shared vision of ending homelessness. Together, we can shift from isolated efforts to a unified approach that ensures no one is left behind.

The Helen S Boylan Foundation

The mission of the Helen S. Boylan Foundation is to enhance the quality of life in our communities of Carthage, Missouri, the Greater Kansas City Area, and Lindale, Texas. We actively distribute quarterly grants to local non-profit organizations serving arts & education, women & children, health & wellness and the beautification of our communities.

Grant Guidelines

The Helen S. Boylan Foundation is a private family foundation established in 1982 to continue the family tradition of commitment to enhancing the quality of life of the community through grants to qualified charitable organizations. In carrying out its mission, the Foundation considers a wide range of proposals within the following areas: arts, education, health, human services, environment, and public interest.

Awareness. Education. Prevention.  These are three key tenets of Bayer Fund’s investments in health and wellness.  With a focus on cancer and cardiovascular disease, we provide resources to organizations dedicated to educating and/or providing services to patients, caregivers and at-risk populations.

Health & Wellness Grants

Programs that Bayer Fund will support include those that focus on patients and their families needing assistance with issues to managing cardiovascular disease and cancer. This includes education, disease awareness, and supportive services for these diseases. In areas related to cardiovascular disease, priority (though not exclusivity) will be given to charitable organizations that focus on programs and support for the African American community due to the high incidence rate of disease in this population.

Giving in this category will focus on support services such as education, disease awareness, and general access to care (e.g., housing for families traveling for cancer or heart care).

All funding requests and budgets must be for program activities and expenses that start after funding decisions are made. All programs must be completed within one year of the start date, except in limited situations where longer term programs have been agreed upon. Grant award amounts vary, depending on the size of the community, the type of programming, and the reach of the organization.

Unrestricted Operating Support Cycle

Our Unrestricted Operating Support Cycle provides mission-based operating support through unrestricted grants to organizations providing emergency assistance, shelter, safety-net health care, child welfare and youth services and other critical human services. This unrestricted funding may be used for organizational expenses which are part of a board-approved annual budget, including administrative salaries, employee benefits, utilities, office supplies and equipment, technology, rent and professional development. Eligible organizations must be based in and provide the majority of their services in the metro Kansas City area.

Jewish Community Cycle

Our Jewish Community cycle includes grants for the following:

• Health focused grants programs which promote short-term and long-term physical or mental health. This category also includes healthcare-related social services. Examples include: nutrition counseling and food assistance, health education, medication assistance, social work services, support for providers of physical or mental health services. MHF maintains specific sources of funding set aside for health focused programs.
• Programs which foster or maintain a vibrant Jewish community. Examples include: Jewish education programs, transportation to Jewish communal social activities, initiatives focused on Jewish persons age 33 and younger, efforts that promote a literate and educated Jewish community, programs that serve older adults.
• Core support for organizations in the Jewish Community (maximum grant request of $10,000). Applicants for core support may not submit program grant requests.

Program Grants: In order to determine the appropriate grant request amount, our Program Officer will contact you to schedule a site visit and discuss your grant. In prior years, grantees had to contact MHF, but we expect this to simplify our process.

Innovation in Healthcare

While all innovative solutions are welcome, priority will be given to proposals focused on testing new models to expand maternal care in rural areas.

Hulston Family Foundation Grant

Our Mission

Our mission is to support efforts to improve the quality of health, education and welfare for children and families, to alleviate hunger and homelessness, and to protect and preserve the natural environment in our communities.

Funding

We do not make first-time grants for more than $25,000, nor do we make grants for an amount that is more than 10% of an organizations operating budget.

We generally do not fund projects for more than two consecutive years, unless prior agreement has been made. We may consider refunding after a 1 year interim has passed.

Sisters' Circle Fund - Greater Kansas City

Established in 2016, the Sisters’ Circle's mission is to increase charitable giving within African American communities to benefit African American communities in the Greater Kansas City area. Annually, the Sister’s Circle Fund provides grants to nonprofit organizations who work with intention to improve the quality of life, or provide services of significant value to the Kansas City region’s African American communities.

After serving Kansas City for decades, The Research Foundation is deepening our investment in the health of our community through a new grants program.

In alignment with local needs and the foundation’s historic programmatic focus, The Research Foundation will award community grants in support of programs and organizations that expand access to care, promote health equity, and address the health care pipeline and promote retention within the health care work force.

Support will be considered for any program delivered by an eligible applicant that aligns with the stated priorities. All program applicants are allowed to request 10% in indirect costs to help ease the burden of overhead necessary to deliver the program.

Nonprofit organizations with health-centric missions for whom more than half of their program offerings are in alignment with The Research Foundation's stated priorities can apply for general operating support.

Background

Aging in community is a concept that promotes interconnected relationships and supports for older adults to safely remain living in their chosen home and community to avoid prematurely entering institutional care due to the need for modest additional resources.

Our Aging in Community Cycle provides three types of grants to organizations and programs that support older adults aging in community. First, we award unrestricted operating grants to organizations which exclusively or primarily support older adults aging in community by providing social and civic engagement, home adaptations/repairs, access to healthy food, physical activity and/or learning opportunities. This unrestricted funding may be used for organizational expenses which are part of a board-approved annual budget, including administrative salaries, employee benefits, utilities, office supplies and equipment, technology, and professional development.

Second, we award grants to programs which exclusively serve older adults aging in community, even though the sponsoring organization is not primarily senior focused. This funding must be used only for the specific program supporting aging in community.

Third, from time to time and by invitation only, we award special project grants to provide seed money to early-stage and/or innovative strategies which address specific challenges of aging in community in the KC metro area. Organizations who are interested in applying for a special project grant should contact our Program Officer, Kim Lewis, to schedule a preliminary conversation.

Older Adult Cycle

Our Older Adult Grants include special initiatives and core operating support.

Special Initiatives are invited proposals only that seek to convene regional stakeholders addressing the important issues facing older adults who wish to age in community. These issues include housing, care giving, transportation, and social/civic enjoyment.

Our Older Adult core operating grants support core operating expenses for organizations that provide programs and services promoting social and civic engagement of older adults. Core operating support is defined as expenses incurred for day-to-day operations such as: Utilities, accounting services, audit, technology, facility maintenance, professional development.

Older Adult Special Initiative Grants are limited to invited, collaborative proposals that convene Kansas City metro area stakeholders addressing important issues facing older adults who wish to age in community. These issues include, but are not limited to, access to community based services (healthcare, housing, care management, transportation, etc.) and social/civic engagement.

Impact Award

The Uncommon Leader Impact Award recognizes non-C-suite employees at 501(c)(3) public charities who drive meaningful impact through their work aligned with the Kauffman Foundation’s mission to advance economic mobility, exemplify the core values of our founder, Ewing Marion Kauffman, and demonstrate significant contributions to the Kansas City region.

Recognized at the Uncommon Leader Award Ceremony this December:

• One awardee will receive $50,000 individually and $100,000 for their organization.

Award Criteria

The Impact Award criteria are based on Mr. Kauffman’s core values of community impact, equity, collaboration, innovation, and a strong commitment to economic mobility.

Mr. Kauffman wanted his philanthropy to have a significant positive effect on the Kansas City community.

• In the past three years, the nominee has actively engaged in initiatives or projects that have led to improvements in the Kansas City region, such as increased access to resources, education, or opportunities.
• The nominee’s work demonstrates evidence of long-term or sustainable benefits in the Kansas City region.

Mr. Kauffman aimed to ensure that opportunities were accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status or background.

• The nominee actively involves and uplifts underrepresented voices within the community.
• The nominee provides individuals and communities with the support and resources they need to succeed – recognizing that people start from different places and need different kinds of support to achieve equitable outcomes.

Mr. Kauffman strongly believed in collaboration as a key to sustainable change and community impact. He emphasized that, “No one person, organization, or institution can solve complex social problems alone. Real progress comes from people working together – sharing ideas, resources, and responsibility to achieve common goals.”

• The nominee collaborates within their organization as well as with other organizations and community members to achieve collective goals.

Mr. Kauffman encouraged the Kauffman Foundation to explore new approaches and innovative solutions to tackle complex problems.

• The nominee demonstrates leadership by inspiring others to take action or by leading successful initiatives.
• The nominee uses innovative approaches to solve community challenges or improve existing programs.

Mr. Kauffman was deeply committed to economic mobility and systems change, particularly through entrepreneurship and education. He believed that everyone should have the opportunity to achieve success, regardless of their background. Mr. Kauffman worked to change the systems that created inequality: “You don’t fix problems by patching symptoms – you change the system so the problems don’t happen in the first place.”

• The nominee demonstrates a visionary and systems-level approach to economic mobility.
• The nominee works to dismantle systemic barriers.

The mission of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation is to improve the quality of life in Greater Kansas City by increasing charitable giving, educating and connecting donors to community needs they care about, and leading on critical community issues.

Fund Description

The Eastland Giving Circle (EGC) is a group of philanthropic and civic-minded individuals dedicated to making a substantive impact to the eastern Jackson County, Missouri area through a yearly donation. The primary grant focus in 2024 is on organizations that provide mental health resources for children and youth in Eastern Jackson County.

One organization will be awarded a grant by EGC through this annual application process. An organization may receive this grant once in a three-year period. Grant recipients will be announced in early November.

The Ina Calkins Board

The Ina Calkins Board has assisted people and non-profit organizations in Kansas City since 1930. Mrs. Calkins, widow of A. W. Calkins, millionaire pump manufacturer, died in 1930 leaving her estate to be administered by ten persons "of high character interested in their fellow man.”

History and Founding Donors

Mr. Calkins began as a traveling pump salesman working in western Illinois, Iowa, eastern Nebraska, and northern Missouri. He visited Kansas City regularly and in 1880 organized the Kansas City Pump Company.

In her will, Ina Calkins directed that the income from the assets of her estate be used by the board:

• To some organization or organizations in the State of Missouri, which are engaged in teaching to the public generally or to some portion thereof, and particularly to the young, advantages, social, moral, economical, and physical of the total abstinence from the use of alcoholic liquor as a beverage, and the advantages of the enactment and enforcement of law for the prohibition of the traffic in intoxicating liquor.
• To meet the physical needs of needy men and women who are above the age of sixty years.
• To provide for the care of children who cannot be properly provided for by those upon whom they are dependent or who have none upon whom they may depend, or/and, to make provision for such children so that they may have the benefit of life in a home, either with their parents or friends or elsewhere.
• To furnish medical or surgical aid for poor children who are crippled or deformed.
• To provide means for the education of those, who being without means thereto, wish to study and prepare themselves for social service of one type or another.
• To aid from time to time in endowing any college or colleges, or any university or universities situated within Kansas City, Missouri, which admit the worthy youth of Kansas City to the privileges thereof.
• To assist in providing funds for erecting buildings for, or/and for carrying on the work of some Young Men’s Christian Association or Associations, or Young Women’s Christian Association or Associations.
• Provided that the people or/and institutions receiving financial aid as aforesaid, and to be benefited thereby, shall be within the City of Kansas City, Missouri, that is, all such people shall be residents of Kansas City, Missouri, and all such institutions shall be located in said City of Kansas City, Missouri, except that the moneys expended under the provisions of sub-paragraph (a) above shall not be so limited. 

Ina Calkins Board Grant

The Ina Calkins Board is seeking grant proposals from 501(c)(3) nonprofits in the Kansas City MO. It is a granting body that will distribute approximately $200,000 each year. The Ina Calkins Charitable Trust will notify all applicants by the end of November of the decisions of its Community Board.

Fund Description

The Homelessness Trust Fund was established in 1988 at The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation to serve as an endowment for assistance to homeless individuals and those in danger of becoming homeless. Grants are made annually to organizations for distribution to eligible individuals residing in Kansas City, Missouri, and/or Jackson County, Missouri. An advisory committee oversees the funds and all grant decisions.

An organization can only submit one application. Organizations with more than one location must determine which location will apply or how one grant may be split between the different locations.

Grant Range: Each applicant may request a grant of $10,000. No more than 20% of the requested amount can be used for operational or staffing costs of the grant program.

Mission

Since 2001, we have been able to provide over $25 million to support organizations across the KC Metro, including more than $8 million since 2021. We prioritize organizations that align with our three pillars: Literacy and Education, Healthy and Active Communities, and Military and Veteran Support. 

Literacy and Education

• $1 Million given in scholarships to first generation and underrepresented students since 2012​
• 500+ students impacted through Royals Literacy League​ since 2023
• 9,000 students participated in Royals Scholastic Victory program in 2023
• Over 100 schools supported in 2023

Healthy and Active Communities

• The Kansas City Urban Youth Academy has welcomed over 60,000 youth and families since 2018
• Over 43,000 students participated in the Crown Schools Program since 2021​
• 1,000 youth participated in softball and baseball in 2023
• $176,000 provided in grants to improve baseball and softball fields throughout the Midwest in 2023 through Royalty Fields presented by Price Chopper

Military and Veterans

• Veteran and active-duty military members have been recognized at each home game with the Salute to Service seat presented by Miller Lite since 2017
• Completed military focused activations to support area veterans such as writing and delivering appreciation letters written by players, fans, alumni, and staff
• Provided support to organizations such as the KCVA, Veterans Community Project, American Patriot Foundation, Horses for Heroes, Wounded Warrior, and many more

American Association of University Women / Wagy Fund (AAUW)

The Kansas City, Missouri, Branch of the American Association of University Women promotes education and scholarships for women. The mission of the Wagy Fund is to further the mission of AAUW and to honor Irene Wagy.

Grant Focus: Organizations that promote societal change through programs benefiting women and girls in Kansas City, Missouri.

Purpose

The purpose of the Kansas City, Missouri Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is to unite graduates of regionally accredited educational institutions to promote equity, education, intellectual growth, individual worth and development of opportunities for women and girls. The mission of the Nettie Irene Van Der Veer Wagy Fund is to further the mission of AAUW and to honor Irene Wagy.

The AAUW/Wagy Fund Committee is seeking proposals that will allow it to join in partnerships with organizations that promote societal change through programs benefiting women and girls. The Committee believes that the entire community benefits from effective programs which provide women and girls:
