The Lawrence Foundation is a private family foundation focused on making grants to support environmental, human services and other causes.

The Lawrence Foundation was established in mid-2000. We make both program and operating grants and do not have any geographical restrictions on our grants. Nonprofit organizations that qualify for public charity status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code or other similar organizations are eligible for grants from The Lawrence Foundation.  

Grant Amount and Types

Grants typically range between $5,000 - $10,000. In some limited cases we may make larger grants, but that is typically after we have gotten to know your organization over a period of time. We also generally don’t make multi-year grants, although we may fund the same organization on a year by year basis over a period of years.

General operating or program/project grant requests within our areas of interests are accepted. In general, regardless of whether a grant request is for general operating or program/project expenses, all of our grants will be issued as unrestricted grants.

Grantee must offer at least one PLTW Computer Science course in the 2025-2026 academic year and must offer one additional course each academic year of the grant period (two different courses in two years). Grantee may implement any PLTW Computer Science courses of their choosing. Grantee must complete two years of grant reporting.

Ramiro Cortes Scholarship

The Ramiro Cortés Memorial Music Scholarship honors the life and achievement of Ramiro Cortés (1933-1984), the first Mexican-American to earn an international reputation as a composer of classical music. The Cortés scholarship has been entirely funded by the free-will offerings of audiences at a series of scholarship benefit concerts in Wenatchee and Leavenworth. The founder and Artistic Director of the concert series is Steve Stefanides of Wenatchee; he first became acquainted with the music of this remarkable composer when researching repertoire for a graduate school masterclass performance.

Ramiro Cortés was born in Dallas, Texas, on November 25, 1933 to Ramiro Cortés, Sr. and Elvira Cortés (née Acosta). A gifted pianist, he began formal study of music composition during high school in Denver, Colorado with the master lutenist and student of Paul Hindemith, Joseph Iadone. Cortés continued his work with Iadone at the University of Denver with a full-tuition scholarship; he then went on to study at Yale and the University of Southern California with a series of important twentieth century American composers, including Henry Cowell, Richard Donovan, Ingolf Dahl, Vittorio Giannini, Roger Sessions and Halsey Stevens. Cortés’ preparatory period culminated in a Fulbright Fellowship which took him to Rome to study for two years with the Italian composer Goffredo Petrassi. He worked briefly in the 1960s as a computer programmer, and after completion of his graduate studies at Juilliard taught composition at the University of California, Los Angeles (1966–67), University of Southern California (1967–72) and the University of Utah (1972–84), where he was Chair of Music Theory. He died of heart failure in Salt Lake city on July 2, 1984. His papers (including compositions) are held in archive by the University of Utah.

Read Conmigo School Impact Grants

Each year, The Kemper Foundation awards up to 22 Read Conmigo School Impact grants of $10,000 each to Title I elementary schools in the specified locations.

Grant funds are intended to support school- or program-wide dual-language initiatives, including school resource and technology improvement, instructional support and professional development, and community and cultural engagement.  

Dallas Mavericks Foundation Grant

The Mavs Foundation is dedicated to building a stronger community by empowering youth, women and families in need. Established in October 1996, the Mavs Foundation is a 501(c)(3) private foundation affiliated with the Dallas Mavericks professional basketball team. Over the past 28 years, the Mavs Foundation has provided grant funding totaling more than $11 million dollars to nonprofit organizations serving women, children and families in need. In addition to grants, the Mavs Foundation has built 58 safe Learn & Play spaces throughout the North Texas community, including 32 basketball courts and 26 Reading & Learning Centers. These spaces are designed to encourage healthy living and provide a safe place for children and residents, as well as expand learning opportunities and access to technology to support youth education programs, teen and adults job-skill training and other critical programs.

Grants & Special Projects

$50,000 Grants

The Mavs Foundation is dedicated to building a stronger community by empowering youth, women and families in need in North Texas. Each year the Board of Trustees selects organizations for grants to support programming costs for organizations that assist children, women and families in need.

Basketball Court Refurbishment Grant

The Mavs Foundation refurbishes basketball courts at local nonprofits and community organizations to encourage healthy living and provide safe places for children and residents in the community. This is an in-kind project to refurbish or replace an existing court or gym in need of repair. All work for basketball court projects is completed by Mavs Foundation staff, volunteers and partners.

Reading and Learning Center Grants

Organizations can apply for a Mavs Foundation Reading and Learning Center grant that is designed to expand learning opportunities for reading and educations programs, as well as provide computer labs with access to technology to assist teens and adults with job-skill training and other valuable tools. This is an in-kind project to refurbish or replace a space in need of repair and updates. All work for reading and learning center projects is completed by Mavs Foundation staff, volunteers and partners.
