National Geographic Society: Request for Proposals
Award Overview
The National Geographic Society (NGS) is pleased to announce a Request for Proposals (RFP) for academic researchers and graduate students investigating topics related to geography education in select states and locations. Awards of up to $10,000 (for researchers) and $5,000 (for graduate students) are available to support research projects.
At NGS we spark curiosity, empower exploration, and inspire change. We fund inspiring changemakers around the world who use the power of science, exploration, education and storytelling to illuminate and protect the wonder of our world.
We welcome submissions from researchers across disciplines but successful proposals must include research related to educational approaches or processes including but not limited to specific learning activities, learning outcomes, or educational tools that advance knowledge. Research that illuminates barriers and/or advances access for those farthest from opportunity is encouraged.
Research proposals should generate new knowledge, and can either be new or scaled up versions of existing successful projects (e.g. evaluating a different group of learners or geographic area).
Iowa Department of Transportation
In 1974, the 65th Iowa General Assembly created the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT), albeit through a long legislative process. It placed other modal agencies, including an Aeronautics Commission, under the department’s responsibility to promote more orderly and effective planning and funding of programs, and to achieve a more balanced transportation system. In 1974, the legislature also created the Iowa Transportation Commission, consisting of seven members. Members are appointed by the governor and subject to Senate confirmation. No more than four persons can represent the same political party. Serving four-year terms, members are responsible for periodically reviewing programs of the department and making all major investment policy decisions.
For more than a century, the IHC and Iowa DOT have promoted the growth and betterment of Iowa’s transportation system. Still headquartered in Ames, the agency continues to serve the transportation needs of Iowa and its citizens.
Revitalize Iowa's Sound Economy (RISE) Program - Immediate Opportunity
Projects funded by the RISE program promote economic development in Iowa through the establishment, construction, and improvement of roads and streets. The RISE program is targeted toward value-adding activities that feed new dollars into the economy and provide maximum economic impact to the state on primary or secondary roads, and city streets open for public use. While all counties and incorporated cities in Iowa are eligible to apply, funding is generally limited to industrial, manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, and professional office developments, with few exceptions.
Immediate Opportunity relate to an immediate, nonspeculative opportunity for permanent job creation or retention. Jobs created are to be value-adding in nature (e.g., manufacturing, industrial, nonretail). Relocation of jobs within the state does not qualify. Iowa DOT district staff will need to be consulted if the proposed roadway and/or development connects to or impacts state right of way. A transportation impact study or letter may be required prior to seeking approval of the application by the Iowa Transportation Commission.
Overview and General Information
In 1988, the Iowa Legislature established Iowa Code 256A creating the Child Development Coordinating Council (CDCC) and funding the Shared Visions Preschool Programs. The mission of the CDCC is to advocate for Iowa’s children and families and support comprehensive programs for children meeting risk factors and their families. The CDCC advises the Iowa Department of Education (Department) regarding the administration and implementation of state funded at-risk programs for children ages birth to five. The Department administers the Shared Visions Preschool Program which provides comprehensive quality preschool program experiences for children meeting identified risk factors who are ages three to five years.
The Department is issuing a competitive application to fund Shared Visions Preschool Programs. The purpose is to solicit applications that will enable the CDCC to select grantees who will provide a Shared Visions Preschool Program created in accordance with Iowa Code section 256A, Iowa Code section 279.51, and the rules in 281—Iowa Administrative Code 64.

Together, these programs represent a vital investment in the future of Iowa’s youngest learners.

Grant Purpose and Requirements:
Districts identified with a Priority rating on the Iowa School Performance Profile are eligible for support to build district-level capacity and strengthen alignment of processes through professional development. Grant funds must be used for professional learning that aligns with and supports district and building action plans, ensuring effective implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs) and high-quality instructional materials (HQIM). Professional development should focus intentionally on identified student groups, particularly students with disabilities, and align the district’s IDEA-DA designation with building-level ESSA action plans. District plans must include monitoring of professional learning through implementation of district-level EBPs, regular data collection, embedded coaching, and ongoing analysis to support reflection and refinement. Anticipated outcomes include a reduction in the achievement gap between the overall student population and identified student groups, improved overall school performance, and the establishment of a sustainable system of support to ensure coordinated and intentional implementation of building-level improvement plans.
Purpose:
The purpose of this competitive grant is to strengthen internal coherence and sustainability between IDEA-DA and ISPP supports in order to enhance district leadership capacity, infrastructure, coaching systems, and school improvement efforts. Through this alignment, the grant aims to accelerate progress in narrowing the achievement gap for students with disabilities by ensuring that evidence-based practices are implemented with fidelity, resources are strategically leveraged and supports are embedded into long-term district systems. This initiative seeks to build sustainable structures that improve outcomes, increase equity across buildings and districts and ensure that students with disabilities receive high-quality instruction and inclusive opportunities across all educational settings.
