Thomas D. Buckley Trust

Thomas Dennis Buckley was born in December 1897 in Missouri to Dennis and Susan Buckley. His family—his parents, brothers Frank and John, sister Elizabeth, and Tom—moved to Lamar in 1906. In 1917, Tom came to Chappell, Nebraska with his brothers. The men lived in a bunkhouse on wheels and hired out to break sod using a one-cylinder Rumley tractor. After serving one year in the military, Tom worked on the railroad for several years before returning to Chappell, where he began farming. He continued farming until his death on June 12, 1979.

Upon his death, a Private Foundation—the Thomas D. Buckley Trust—was formed in accordance with his wishes. The Trustees sold his land in 1980 at record-high prices and invested the proceeds, along with the investments Tom held at the time of his death. These funds continue to support the mission of the Trust today.

Thomas D. Buckley Trust Continuing Education Scholarship

The Trust awards $20,000 of scholarships to students who are currently enrolled in college seeking Associate Degrees or Bachelor Degrees. There will be ten $2,000 scholarships awarded each year to students who will be a college Sophomore, Junior, or Senior during the next Fall Semester.

Each scholarship will be paid $1,000 in the Fall Semester and $1,000 in the Spring Semester, and cannot be carried to another year. The payments will be sent directly to the school that the recipient is attending.

The scholarship money can be used for tuition, room and board, fees and books.

This scholarship is to provide financial support for an individual pursuing a degree in the field of nursing. The scholarship recipient shall be under the age of 50 seeking education beyond the high school level to become a nurse or certified nursing assistant.

VFW Youth Scholarships- Voice of Democracy

Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy® audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 28,000 ninth through 12th grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $1.6 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program. 

The national first place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. The complete list of other national scholarships range up to $21,000, with the first place winner from each VFW Department (state) winning a scholarship of at least $1,000.

VFW Department (state) first place winners also receive a trip to participate in Founding Forward’s Spirit of America Youth Leadership experience at Valley Forge which is an inspiring four-day program where students experience mock congressional debates, participate in a free enterprise challenge, visit historical sites and engage in interactive educational activities. This immersive experience allows students to develop their critical thinking and leadership skills while understanding their responsibilities as citizens. The trip, awarded to every VFW Department (state) winner, is made possible through the generous support of Twisted X.

Students interested in participating must submit their audio essay prepared on this year's theme, with a completed entry form to their local participating VFW Post.

Maude and Harvey Goehring Scholarship

This scholarship is for a student preparing to teach physical science or mathematics in the public secondary schools. The recipient shall be a citizen and resident of Henderson County and shall have graduated from a Henderson County high school. The recipient shall be required to need financial assistance to pursue his or her education at a post-high school institution.

Oncology Nursing Foundation

The mission of the Oncology Nursing Foundation is to support cancer nursing excellence.

Since 1981, the Oncology Nursing Foundation(ONF), through generous contributions from individuals and institutions, has provided more than $33 million in funding to support oncology nursing education, research and leadership development. This funding has translated to career development awards, academic scholarships, research grants, a myriad of specialized educational initiatives, as well as nurse resiliency support. Radiation Oncology Certified Nurse (ROCN™) Exam Scholarship

Recipients receive funding to cover the ONCC ROCN™ Certification exam fee.

Purpose

To support registered oncology nurses who specialize in providing care for adult or pediatric patients with cancer undergoing radiation therapy by providing funding support to cover the ROCN™ Certification exam fee.

Applicant must have graduated from a Henderson County public or private high school and attained a GPA of at least a "C" or its equivalent. Applicant may be planning to attend a two-year or a four-year institution.

This scholarship provides financial support to a graduate or graduating senior of a Henderson County public high school or Venice High School in Sarasota, Florida who is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business at either a public or a private (non-profit) college or university.

The applicant must be a resident of Henderson County, but the student does not have to attend a Henderson County school. Financial aid is a requirement. The scholarship is not based on merit but is based on need.

This scholarship is for students graduating from high school or the equivalent who are residents of Henderson County and pursuing a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited educational institution with a focus on accounting.

Clarinet Scholarship & Education Program

The Clarinet Scholarship & Education Program seeks to honor Renna Clarinet Thornton’s philosophy and enthusiasm for education.

After graduating from Coppin State College with her degree in special education in 1972, Renna started her 40-year teaching journey with Baltimore City Public Schools as a science teacher and special educator.

Through the Clarinet Program, the Claude C. Thornton Foundation offers workforce development training, a $1,000 scholarship to collegiate students, as well as parent coaching 1:1s and workshops.

The Clarinet Scholarship provides awardees with unrestricted monetary and mentorship support to empower minority students through their academic journey, ultimately promoting exceptional achievement. This scholarship is for a graduate of a high school in Henderson County and shall be awarded based on academic standing and financial need. The recipient need not be at the top of his or her class academically nor at the bottom of his or her class financially.

T. Llyle and Marion S. Keith Scholarship

The applicant must be a graduating senior or a graduate of a public high school in Henderson County. This scholarship is not based on merit (however, must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 or better), but on financial need. Students must be pursuing their undergraduate education in a two or four year accredited institution.

The Cogley-Buffington Certified Property and Casualty Underwriters Fund offers scholarships managed by the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, which awards over $500,000 annually to local students. Applicants must be U.S. academic institutions with accredited mining programs, linking project goals to documented health burdens.

The Occupational Safety and Health Research (R01) grant aims to enhance understanding of workplace hazards, develop strategies to mitigate risks, and translate research into effective prevention measures. This initiative encourages applicants to address specific occupational health challenges and articulate the anticipated outcomes of their research, contributing to the reduction of work-related illnesses and injuries. The Chronic Care Telehealth Centers of Excellence Program, funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration, aims to enhance chronic care management through innovative telehealth technologies. This initiative will support academic medical centers in integrating comprehensive telehealth services for chronic disease prevention, management, and acute episode treatment. The centers will also contribute to research publications, establishing national benchmarks for effective telehealth integration in chronic care.

Cohen Cares Scholarship

We offer a scholarship for current Cohen employees participating in the Cohen Cares employee giving program and/or their dependents. Must be pursuing a college degree and/or a trade school certification.

Scholarships are non-renewable, but students may apply each year. Scholarship amounts are $2,500 for college and $500 for technical school. 

Applications are open year-round. After we receive all application requirements, we internally review applications and make decisions within two weeks of receipt. An email will be sent to the applicant to complete follow up requirements.

Marshall High School Scholarship

The Alison Shuemake Scholarship is for a Marshall High School senior and graduates pursing an academic or technical degree or certification.

Applications are open year-round. After we receive all application requirements, we internally review applications and make decisions within two weeks of receipt. An email will be sent to the applicant to complete follow up requirements.

Scholarship payments are sent directly to the school.
