Community Foundation of Carroll County

The Community Foundation of Carroll County, Inc. was established in 1994 to ensure financial support for Carroll County not-for-profit organizations. It is governed by a Board of Directors and is a 501c(3) public charity. The Community Foundation of Carroll County is trusted partner for donors and nonprofits. We provide one central place where anyone can create a charitable fund, support what matters most, and leave a legacy of lasting impact.

Scholarships

The Community Foundation of Carroll County supports more than 75 scholarships. These scholarships vary in the amounts they award and cover a wide variety of student interests. Qualifiers range from academic achievements, sports played, and community service performed, to 4-H and FFA involvement. While the majority are for graduating Carroll County high school seniors, there are several for students in college or technical school, and even opportunities for students attending private primary school. 

Bee a Rae of Sunshine Foundation – MaKenzi Rae Cash Memorial Nursing Scholarship

To support future nurses who exemplify kindness, compassion, and a commitment to caring for others, honoring MaKenzi Rae Cash’s legacy of empathy and her dedication to standing up against bullying in our community.

School Nurses Association of Carroll County (SNACC) Scholarship

The purpose of the School Nurses Association of Carroll County (SNACC) Scholarship is to provide scholarships to graduating seniors from any Carroll County Public High School planning to pursue a career in nursing. The scholarship is intended to help defray first year college expenses.

All income in the Fund shall be used for fund purposes.

The money shall be transmitted by the Community Foundation of Carroll County directly to the desired college or university and applied directly to the student's tuition and books. The monies shall not be remitted to the scholarship winner.

The Ryan Legacy Scholarship

Melanie Ryan was an incredible mother, wife, friend, and nurse for almost 30 years. Her kindness, generosity, and compassion will be remembered forever by those who had the honor to know and love her. She passed away from Metastatic Triple Negative Breast Cancer in June of 2024. Her husband Tom was the love of her life and also and incredibly kind and caring husband, father, manager and friend. He passed away from Hodgkins Lymphoma in November of 2022. This scholarship remembers this beautiful couple by assisting graduating high school seniors and current college students in pursuing a college degree. Preference will be given to student athletes in memory of Tom’s love of sports and students pursuing a healthcare related degree in memory of Melanie’s incredible nursing skills and heart.

WHS Class of 1930/ E. Rita Kolb Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1981 by the Westminster High School Class of 1930 to provide scholarships for graduating seniors of the Carroll County Career & Technology Center in the Nursing program. It is open to ALL students in the Nursing program.

UNCF Health Careers Scholarship

The UNCF Health Careers Scholarship Program is designed to assist in the development of a more diverse workforce in health professions in Greater Cleveland. University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic and Kaiser Foundation are partnering with UNCF to develop an endowed scholarship for students of CSSM (Cleveland School of Science and Medicine) at John Hay High School who plan to enter the health professions.

Eligible students will receive a $5,000 merit-based scholarship in the Academic Year 2026-2027. Award recipients may be eligible for renewals for the subsequent years provided they continue to meet the criteria.

Stanley T. and Berenice J. Lowe Scholarship Fund

The Berenice Bryant Lowe Fund was established by the Historical Society of Battle Creek and the Lowe family to honor and perpetuate the legacy of the pioneer local historian who tirelessly researched and passionately promoted Battle Creek's heritage for more than twenty years. Berenice Bryant Lowe was a graduate of the University of Michigan and a drama and speech teacher at Battle Creek Central High School. She was a passionate collector of local history and spent years ferreting long-forgotten items out of attics and collecting anecdotes from residents. She was one of the moving spirits behind the revitalization of the Historical Society of Battle Creek and the renovation of the Kimball House into a museum of local history. To recognize Berenice Lowe's twin interest in local history- research and education- the fellowship was established in 1999 with the purpose of providing funding to individuals to develop educational materials and to publish local historical research for use in the community. In 2018, to recognize Berenice's passion for education and her secret sponsorship of students attending KCC, a scholarship was added to support students attending Kellogg Community College in the professional trades and nursing.

William G. & Marion E. Stuckle Scholarship

The fund was also established to provide scholarships and assistance with training for individuals pursuing, or wishing to pursue, a career in nursing. William Stuckle, and his late wife, Marion, have long recognized the importance of encouraging individuals in selecting nursing as a profession in our society and the need for constant updates in their training. The scholarship awards will be based on character, including the caring, respect, trustworthiness, responsibility, fairness, and citizenship of the individuals.

Georgia Rothberg Nursing Scholarship Fund

Georgia Rothberg was a school nurse. She as very concerned about cancer research and volunteered many hours with the American Cancer Society. In establishing this scholarship fund, it was Georgia's hope that dedicated nursing careers would develop from this assistance, and that the scholarship recipients share the value of their education with the community. This scholarship was designed to provide financial assistance to individuals who are currently providing nursing services or desire to provide nursing services in the Battle Creek area for educational expenses incurred to obtain nursing degrees and/or continuing nursing education for those who have already obtained nursing degrees. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic performance, financial need, character and citizenship, and motivation to succeed.

Kay Earline Vanderford Nursing Scholarship Fund

The Kay Earline Vanderford Nursing Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 in loving memory of Kay Earline Vanderford by her son Douglas Vanderford. A graduate of Kellogg Community College's nursing program, Kay Earline Vanderford worked as a LPN for several years at area nursing homes. She served the Homer and Litchfield communities most of her life and was very compassionate toward her patients. This scholarship assists those who are called to enter the field of nursing.

John and Anne Zanetti Scholarship Fund

The John and Anne Zanetti Scholarship established by John and Anne Zanetti honor the future leaders of our kids, who will inspire youth to make the world better. The scholarship assists graduating seniors and graduates from Calhoun County public and private high schools pursuing post-secondary educational opportunities in nursing.

Norman J. and Maureen L. Campbell Family Scholarship

This scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of Maureen Campbell who established the Norman J. & Maureen L. Campbell Family Scholarship of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. Norman Campbell was a proud graduate of Muskegon Heights High School and the University of Michigan with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While at U of M, he met a nurse named Maureen. Shortly after, they moved to California where he was employed by Lockheed Aircraft, in the "Skunk Works" division, and was the youngest engineer working on the super-top secret SR71 Blackbird spy plane. His specialty was Titanium, of which the SR71 was made. Later, he worked as an engineer for General Electric in Warren, MI., and in 1970 they moved back to Muskegon to go into business with his father Hugh to form Campbell Grinder Company. He became president in 1985 until the business was sold and he retired in 2001. Norm took pride in the fact that all of his employees were treated as family in a family business. He was an active golf and tennis player. He spent 15 years at the Detroit Tiger Fantasy Camp, where he played baseball with the "Old Tigers", and was honored to be selected to throw out the "First Pitch" at a Tiger's game at Comerica Park in 2011. Norm also enjoyed weekend trips with his family to Glen Arbor. He was a humble, kind man, friend to all, and never condemning. Being a family man was his greatest joy of all. Maureen established this fund to honor her late husband Norman. This scholarship is for students attending the University of Michigan with first preference to an engineering student and second preference to a nursing student.

Patricia A. Bard Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of Doug Bard, who established the Patricia A. Bard Nursing Scholarship of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. Pat Bard, a wife, mother, grandmother, business-woman, travel agent, teacher, and friend, passed away on May 21, 2010. Doug and Pat had talked of a scholarship in the past, and, toward the end of her fight against cancer, together chose the field of nursing as the focus. While Pat's career involved the world of business and travel, she and Doug both experienced first-hand the impact that caring, well-trained nurses can make. The scholarship in her name will make an impact, too, on the opportunities available to nursing students.

Peter J. & Barbara J. Kutches Scholarship

This scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of the Barbara Kutches, who established the Peter J. and Barbara J. Kutches Scholarship of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. Pete and Barbara Kutches are well known figures in the Muskegon area, even though they both grew up in Escanaba. Pete was a coach in the area stretching over 4 decades at Muskegon High School, Muskegon Catholic Central, and finally Reeths-Puffer before retiring in the late 1990's. He was best known as a football coaching winning state championships as a head coach at MCC and R-P, the only coach in the state of Michigan to do so. Barbara was a nurse for several years at Mercy Hospital, serving as a time as the director of nursing. They shared 62 years of marriage, 5 children, 15 grandchildren, and soon-to-be 15 greatgrandchildren. Pete was the 10th of 13 kids in his family and the only one to go on to get a college degree because of a scholarship he was awarded. Because of this, Pete and Barbara both felt stongly that they wanted to provide that opportuntity to area youth, specifically in the areas which they felt rewarded by in their careers - education and nursing.

Sidney and Ann DeBoer Geriatric Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of Andrew, John and Samuel T. DeBoer, who established the Sidney and Ann DeBoer Geriatric Scholarship of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. Sidney and Ann DeBoer began their involvement in the care of Muskegon's elderly in 1956 when they began the DeBoer Nursing Home. Both retired in the mid 1970s, and Sidney DeBoer died in 1987. Over the years, they have given financial support to a number of nursing students at Muskegon Community College. The Sidney and Ann DeBoer Geriatric Nursing Scholarship was established in 1994 by Andrew, John, and Samuel DeBoer, sons of Sidney and Ann DeBoer, in honor of their mother's 80th birthday. The scholarship will continue the DeBoers' tradition, started long ago, of supporting the educational pursuits of Muskegon County nursing students at Muskegon Community College.

Stanley C. and Maxine G. Sutherland Scholarship

This scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of Stanley Sutherland, Jr., who established the Stanley C. and Maxine G. Sutherland Scholarship of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. Education was important to Maxine Sutherland. She graduated from Muskegon Junior College in 1940, received her nursing degree from the Hackley School of Nursing in 1942, and continued her education over the years until she received a B.S. in Education from Western Michigan University. Nursing was also important to Maxine, and over the years she was employed by Hackley Hospital, Visiting Nurses, and the office of her brother, Dr. Griffith. In her memory, her husband, Stanley Sutherland, Jr., has established the Maxine G. Sutherland Memorial , a donor advised , which will assist Muskegon County residents to pursue careers in nursing and other health related fields as well as support other projects and programs that were equally important to her.

Lewis G. and Margaret R. Curtis Scholarship

This scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of Lewis and Margaret, who established the Lewis G. and Margaret R. Curtis Scholarship of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. Margaret Curtis wished to establish two scholarships; one for females pursuing careers in nursing or health care careers and the other for a male pursuing a vocational, technical or trade career scholarship. Mrs. Curtis, a nurse in the area, provided for this fund in her will in memory of her husband and herself. She stated that the income be used to award scholarships in two fields, nursing and vocational training.

Louis S. and Nancy L. Rubinsky Scholarship

This scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of Nancy L. Rubinsky, who established the Louis S. and Nancy L. Rubinsky Scholarship of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County in honor of Louis. Lifelong residents of Muskegon, Nancy and Louis Rubinsky, had been active members of the Muskegon community. Louis was a fixture on Western Avenue as a salesman at Vets Clothing. Nancy was active at the Muskegon Community College, first, as an instructor of nursing, and, then, as a Board Trustee. Grants from the fund will mirror the Rubinsky's individual passions. In honor of Louis, the fund will support community education projects in the visual and performing arts and Nancy's interests will be expressed by supporting adult/returning students pursuing nursing degrees.

Graduate-level registered nurses in geriatric-focused programs can receive scholarship support for master’s or doctoral study through Nurses Educational Funds, including those studying in Michigan. Grants from Nurses Educational Funds help U.S. RNs in accredited nursing programs with at least 12 graded credits completed and a 3.6 GPA continue advanced nursing education and leadership preparation.

U.S. registered nurses pursuing accredited master’s or doctoral nursing programs can apply for Nurses Educational Funds’ Columbia University–Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association/J. Margaret Ada Mutch Scholarship to support advanced study. Applicants must have at least two semesters remaining, a minimum 3.6 GPA, and meet strict licensure, membership, and residency requirements; Columbia University School of Nursing students and alumni receive preference, including those from Michigan.

Graduate-level registered nurses in the U.S. pursuing master’s or doctoral nursing degrees can apply for the Columbia University–Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association/Penny Hund West Scholarship from Nurses Educational Funds. Eligible Michigan nurses meeting NEF’s academic, licensure, and accreditation requirements may receive direct scholarship support for advanced nursing education and leadership preparation.

Doctoral-level registered nurses in accredited U.S. graduate nursing programs, including those in Michigan, can apply for Nurses Educational Funds’ Cynthia Davis Sculco Scholarship to support studies in nursing education. Applicants must hold U.S. citizenship or legal residency, maintain at least a 3.6 GPA, and have a minimum of two semesters of study remaining after award notification.

The Edith M. Pritchard Scholarship, offered by Nurses Educational Funds Inc., supports nurses pursuing master's or doctoral degrees in nursing education and public health. Applicants must hold a current RN license, maintain a GPA of 3.6, and have at least two semesters of study remaining post-award notification. This scholarship promotes nursing leadership and is funded through donations, reflecting over a century of commitment to nursing education.

The Eleanor C. Lambertsen Scholarship, established through a legacy of nursing leadership, supports doctoral candidates pursuing education or administration in nursing. Applicants must have a valid RN license and be enrolled in an accredited nursing program with a minimum GPA of 3.6. This fund honors Eleanor Lambertsen’s contributions to nursing, aiming to empower future leaders in healthcare. With over a century of service, Nurses Educational Funds continues to enhance nursing education through scholarships for master's and doctoral programs.

The Estelle Massey Osborne Scholarship supports exceptional African American nurses pursuing master's degrees. Applicants must have at least two semesters remaining in their program, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.6, and hold a current RN license. This scholarship, provided by Nurses Educational Funds Inc., honors Estelle Massey Osborne, the first African American nurse to earn a master's degree in the U.S. It aims to promote nursing leadership through financial assistance for advanced education.

The Evelyn J. Barclay Scholarship supports professional nurses pursuing advanced degrees in nursing education, practice, research, and administration. Applicants must have a current RN license and be enrolled in accredited graduate nursing programs. This scholarship, awarded by Nurses Educational Funds Inc., emphasizes the importance of nursing leadership and aims to enhance the nursing workforce. Preference is given to doctoral candidates focusing on public health, nursing education, or research, ensuring a continued commitment to improving healthcare outcomes.

The Georgette Viellion Scholarship, established in 2021 with a $50,000 donation, supports doctoral nursing students aiming to become full-time faculty members. Applicants must have an RN license and maintain a GPA of at least 3.6. Preference is given to those focusing on nursing research or organizational study. This scholarship is part of the Nurses Educational Funds, Inc.'s mission to promote nursing leadership through financial assistance for advanced education in nursing.

The Henry B. Spencer Scholarship, awarded by Nurses Educational Funds Inc., supports RNs pursuing master's or doctoral degrees in nursing education, practice, research, and administration. Applicants must have at least two semesters remaining in their program and meet specific eligibility criteria, including current RN licensure and professional nursing association membership. This scholarship prioritizes doctoral students focusing on nursing research or organizational study, continuing a legacy of leadership in nursing established by Henry Spencer.
