For more than 85 years, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) has been a champion for the health and well-being of our members and the communities we serve. Founded in 2024, the Nebraska Blue Foundation now allows us to concentrate our efforts into pockets of our community that need to be uplifted the most.

The foundation has four priority areas:

• Serving Seniors – Addressing the needs of Nebraska’s aging population
• Increasing Access to Preventive Healthcare – Proactive measures to prevent illness, detect health issues early and reduce the risk of chronic disease
• Economic Vitality – Investing in job creation and civic programs to promote a vibrant economy
• Third Places – Building and strengthening the social fabric of communities across the state

The Nebraska Blue Foundation is particularly interested in supporting innovation and pilot projects. As a new foundation, our approach is to be catalytic with our grants – primarily investing in new ideas or programs that could meet a specific need with a one-time investment.

Serving Seniors

The spring cycle focuses on Serving Seniors and Preventive Healthcare. 

This funding addresses the needs of Nebraska’s aging population.

Assisted living facilities, senior centers, libraries, and nonprofits in Nebraska can receive support to hire teaching artists to lead sequential arts workshops for older adults. Nebraska Arts Council’s Creative Aging Arts Grant offers up to US $3,000 to fund residencies that build artistic skills, encourage social engagement, and culminate in a community showcase event.

Assisted living facilities and other providers serving seniors and people with disabilities in Nebraska can apply for the 5310 Enhanced Mobility Transportation Grant to fund vehicles that improve resident transportation and access to community services. Offered by the Nebraska Department of Transportation, this program supports enhanced mobility when existing transportation options are limited.

Nebraska senior-service and community health nonprofits can access funding through the Immanuel Community Vision Foundation to meet seniors’ physical, emotional, and spiritual needs and strengthen community health. Eligible 501(c)(3) organizations serving Nebraska or select Iowa counties may receive up to US $75,000, with special consideration for programs supporting seniors, community health, and ELCA congregational ministry.

Senior-serving 501(c)(3) nonprofits in Nebraska and Iowa can seek funding for programs benefiting older adults, including assisted living residents. Focused on military/veteran, senior community, education, and arts initiatives, Burlington Capital invites applications from local and select national organizations whose work has clear, game-changing impact in these communities.

Nebraska senior services and assisted living organizations can seek AmeriCorps planning support to design evidence-based service programs addressing community needs. ServeNebraska supports senior-focused initiatives in Nebraska by offering up to US $75,000 for AmeriCorps Planning Grants to build program components, strengthen operations, and prepare for future AmeriCorps implementation funding.

Qualified 501(c)(3) organizations providing senior services, vision care, children’s services, environmental conservation, historic preservation, or drunk driving prevention can seek US $5,000 - US $100,000 for impactful projects, primarily in Utah. Nebraska assisted living and elder-care nonprofits with programs fitting these priorities may be eligible for support from the David Kelby Johnson Memorial Foundation.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations providing care for the sick or aged, supporting senior services, or offering related health and social services can apply for US $10,000 - US $25,000 in funding. Harry Kramer Memorial Fund supports U.S. charities, including those in Nebraska, and also backs education in South Florida and work benefiting Israel’s general welfare.

Nonprofit charitable, benevolent, and religious organizations serving seniors and other needy Christians in Nebraska can apply for the Robert J. Keown Trust’s US $10,000 - US $20,000 grants to provide basic human needs and care. Although the trust primarily supports Los Angeles County, Nebraska assisted living and senior service providers may be eligible if they meet these priorities.

Senior-serving organizations in Nebraska can seek support for programs benefiting older adults, including those facing dementia, Alzheimer’s, hunger, or loneliness. Focused on senior services and other vulnerable groups, Jtmf Foundation emphasizes work in the Pacific NW but may also consider impactful U.S. projects; note they are not currently accepting unsolicited applications.

Nonprofits, government entities, and similar organizations in Nebraska can seek funding for livability projects that benefit adults age 50 and older, including pedestrian safety, high-speed internet, and housing design initiatives. AARP Foundation’s Community Challenge Demonstration Grants offer US $10,000 - US $25,000 for permanent improvements, temporary demonstrations, or innovative pilot programs that can be replicated in other communities across the U.S.

With a mission to serve people age 50-plus, this program provides Nebraska senior-service organizations and government entities with US $2,500 capacity-building microgrants for livability projects. Funding supports walk and bike audits, HomeFit home modifications, and disaster preparedness efforts that create safer, more age-friendly communities, which may benefit assisted living facilities and related programs.

Nebraska senior services and aging-focused 501(c)(3) organizations can access funding through the Wallerstein Foundation for Geriatric Life Improvement to support projects that help older adults stay healthy, active, and engaged. Grants may fund programs addressing dementia, stroke, adult day care, home health and wellness, screenings, nutrition, mobility, cultural activities, or geriatric research.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations supporting elder care, rare disease research, climate initiatives, intellectual freedom, or Jewish heritage in Nebraska and across the U.S. may be eligible for program or project funding. Mike & Sofia Segal Foundation backs innovative, well-planned efforts that align with its priorities and demonstrate clear capacity, realistic budgets, and measurable objectives.

Cooperatives and cooperative development organizations in Nebraska and across the U.S. can seek US $20,000 - US $30,000 to advance cooperative development, research, or technical assistance projects. With a mission to strengthen cooperative solutions, Cooperative Development Foundation supports efforts serving seniors, limited-equity housing co-ops, worker co-ops, and food co-ops, including placed-based initiatives with broader impact.

Nonprofits, government entities, and universities working to improve economic well-being for marginalized older adults through systems-level change may be eligible for Next50 Foundation’s Changing Aging support, including organizations in Nebraska. Funding backs innovative, partnership-based efforts in areas like ending ageism, advancing digital equity, and supporting aging in place for low- and moderate-income seniors.

Nebraska senior services and aging-focused 501(c)(3) nonprofits running programs for older adults can access funding via Friends Foundation for the Aging. Organizations addressing healthy aging, caregiver support, intergenerational programs, or leadership in aging services, especially those serving underserved populations or reflecting Quaker values, may be considered, with most awards supporting one-year program costs rather than capital expenses.

Request for Proposals

Community Care Corps encourages organizations across the country to apply for 18-month grants ($30,000–$200,000) to develop and scale innovative volunteer programs that provide nonmedical assistance to older adults, adults age 18 and older with disabilities and family caregivers.

Projects funded through this initiative will increase the number of community-based volunteer programs available to provide nonmedical assistance while decreasing the number of older adults, adults with disabilities, and family caregivers who need assistance in maintaining independence in the community but are unable to obtain help. In doing so, the initiative will strengthen community-based supports that help people maintain independence, reduce unmet needs, and improve overall well-being.

The Harry Sudakoff Foundation Grant supports qualified charities in Sarasota, Florida, focusing on arts, community, education for youth, environment, human services, and science. Established by builder Harry Sudakoff, the foundation prioritizes organizations with a history of support. Grants are restricted to 501(c)(3) entities, excluding individuals and certain funding types like endowments and operating expenses. A commitment to impactful contributions is central to the foundation's mission.

Health care leaders from Nebraska organizations serving older adults can seek scholarships to join the AHA Next Generation Leaders Fellowship, focusing on age-friendly care. John A Hartford Foundation covers US $13,995 in program fees for fellows who implement the 4Ms Framework to improve hospital and health system care for seniors.

With a mission to foster innovation in aging, Sephardic Home for the Aged Foundation provides Nebraska senior services and hospice organizations with funding for end-of-life care and preventing elder neglect. Eligible 501(c)(3) nonprofits or fiscally sponsored groups operating at least two years can seek support for services, education, outreach, and advocacy for older adults.

Nebraska senior service nonprofits supporting dementia care and brain degenerative diseases can access funding through Sephardic Home For The Aged Foundation to improve care and quality of life for older adults. Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) organizations or those with a fiscal sponsor, operating at least two years; an LOI is required before a full application.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations with at least two years of operation supporting older adults can seek funding for programs combating social isolation and its impacts in Nebraska and nationwide. With a mission to foster innovation in aging, Sephardic Home for the Aged Foundation supports trauma-informed care, mental health services, and intergenerational programming for isolated seniors.

This funding opportunity aims to enhance the participation of older adults in the Senior Nutrition Program by focusing on preventative health initiatives. The project seeks to build capacity through statewide efforts, develop shared resources for program sustainability, and foster collaboration among senior nutrition programs and key organizations. By achieving these goals, the initiative will improve health outcomes and strengthen community ties for older adults.

The Piñon Foundation Grant supports 501(c)(3) organizations and educational institutions focused on enhancing the education, health, and well-being of children and the elderly. Although it primarily funds initiatives in West Texas, the Dallas Fort Worth area, and Oklahoma City, it is open to proposals from other regions that can positively impact community growth. The foundation believes in the transformative power of education and health to foster community success and development.

The Albert G. and Olive H. Schlink Foundation, established in 1966, has significantly impacted Ohio's nonprofit sector by increasing its annual grant distribution from an initial $500 to over $1.4 million in 2023. The Foundation prioritizes organizations with ties to Erie and Huron Counties and emphasizes thoughtful evaluation of all grant applications. With a focus on community needs, it continues to honor the founders' legacy while adapting to the evolving demands of local nonprofits.

The Leonard Litz Foundation-Silver Connect Initiative aims to enhance the quality of life for LGBTQ+ older adults by providing grant funding to nonprofit organizations. This program addresses isolation and barriers faced by seniors, particularly those affected by disability, race, or economic hardship. By supporting community-driven models, Silver Connect promotes dignity, safety, and inclusion, ensuring that LGBTQ+ elders have access to necessary resources and affirming services across the Eastern United States.
