Household Hazardous Waste Collection Grants

New Hampshire’s population of 1.4 million has almost doubled since 1970; the year of the first Earth Day. New Hampshire residents purchase millions of dollars’ worth of household products such as cleaners, pesticides and electronic devices that make our lives easier, safer and more enjoyable. The decision to purchase one product over another is generally determined by its price and effectiveness with media advertising being the primary source of such information. Unfortunately, consumers are not always aware of the toxic nature of these products nor do they fully consider the possible environmental or health effects resulting from their use and disposal.

When stored or used improperly, product vapors may react with the chemicals in another product creating toxic gases, poisonings and even fires. Every day, products like drain cleaners, medications, pesticides, bleaches and fluorescent lamps are thrown into the household trash where they are free to come in contact and react with each other. Even if the chemicals in these products don’t react in the garbage, their disposal as solid waste could allow them to leak into the environment where they would contaminate the air we breathe and water we drink.

NHDES household hazardous waste (HHW) collection project grants support HHW collection events across the state and help communities manage household-generated hazardous wastes. The HHW collection project grants are open to eligible municipalities and approved local or regional entities (for example, a town conservation commission, solid waste management district, regional planning council or commission, or non-profit organization, that has been authorized by a municipality to coordinate the municipality’s participation in one or more HHW collection projects). The grants are set at a designated per capita rate which may vary from year to year, or up to half the cost of the collection project at a dollar-for-dollar match for the communities served.

Eligible applicants must conduct an educational outreach campaign, which is more than simply promoting the collection event(s). The educational component must include information about ways to reduce HHW generation (pollution prevention), the potential dangers of improper disposal, and approved disposal measures. 

The Growing Tribal Economies Through Forest Market Innovations grant program, initiated by First Nations Development Institute, aims to empower Tribes and Alaska Native Villages to engage in emerging markets that enhance forest health and resilience. With funding of $200,000 to $500,000 per grant, this initiative supports projects focusing on sustainability, innovation, and traditional knowledge. Eligible applicants are encouraged to develop forest products, certifications, and practices that contribute positively to biodiversity and ecosystem management.

Entergy’s Open Grants Program aims to enhance community well-being through funding initiatives in arts, education, social services, and community improvement. The program prioritizes support for organizations that serve diverse populations, including children and low-income communities. Eligible entities must have 501(c)(3) status or equivalent nonprofit recognition. Applications should be submitted three months in advance, allowing ample time for review. Entergy focuses on projects that foster self-sufficiency and enrich local neighborhoods.

They focus on health, education, and wellness, emphasizing the importance of children's success. Organizations applying for grants must be U.S.-based and verified as charitable. Preference is given to initiatives impacting health and education, especially those involving Encova associates as active participants.

The Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship, awarded by Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, supports first and second-year medical students conducting research over 2 to 12 months. With a total funding of $7,000, students can receive reimbursement for travel expenses up to $1,000 for presenting their findings at national conferences. Eligibility requires enrollment in schools with active AΩA chapters, while those taking a year off for research or holding a PhD are ineligible.

The ReTreeUS Back-to-School Garden Program empowers schools in Maine and New Hampshire to cultivate healthy, organic gardens aligned with the academic calendar.
