Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership Grants

ORLP funds the acquisition or development of new parks, or substantial renovation of parks, in low-income communities of at least 25,000 people. ORLP focuses on providing new or significantly improved nature-based parks in urban, disadvantaged communities lacking adequate access to walkable outdoor recreation (a.k.a. park deserts).

The program priorities described below are established by the Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act (Public Law 118-234), which represents a historic bipartisan commitment to expanding outdoor recreation on public lands and waters for all Americans.

Anticipated Award Amounts:

ORLP is a dollar-for-dollar matching grant program, with a minimum award of $300,000 and maximum award of $15M. ORLP is a reimbursement program. Grant recipients must use their own resources to pay for all project costs.

Cost Share Requirements:

The required 50% grant match must come from eligible (typically non-federal) sources, such as Green Acres park development or acquisition grants, county and municipal open space funding, and philanthropic organizations, among others.

Technical Assistance Grants

These grants provide funding to nonprofit community groups to employ independent Licensed Site Remediation Professionals to perform activities designed to help improve the community’s understanding of the environmental conditions at, and remediation of, a contaminated site. The bulk of the funds must be used to hire an independent Licensed Site Remediation Professional as a technical advisor to help interpret and comment on site related documents. Funded by the DEP, grants are available to community groups during the remedial investigation phase and the remedial action phase of a cleanup of a contaminated site. DEP will award a maximum of $10,000 for a single remedial investigation and a maximum of $10,000 for a single remedial action. DEP will not award a Technical Assistance Grant to more than one community group at any one time for any contaminated site.

GRANT LIMITATIONS 

TAG funds are available to community groups during the Remedial Investigation (RI) phase and the Remedial Action (RA) phase of a cleanup of a contaminated site. DEP will award a maximum of $10,000 for a single RI and a maximum of $10,000 for a single RA. DEP will not award a TAG to more than one community group at any one time for any contaminated site.

The NJ Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) offers farmers financial and technical assistance to enhance conservation efforts on their lands. By enrolling in the program, producers can implement practices that improve water quality, soil health, and wildlife habitat. CSP is open to all agricultural operations and provides annual payments for ongoing conservation activities, as well as opportunities for contract renewal. This initiative supports sustainable farming while addressing critical environmental concerns throughout New Jersey.

The NJ Agricultural Management Assistance (AMA) program, administered by the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service, supports agricultural producers in managing financial risks through practices like resource conservation and diversification. Participants can receive up to 75% cost assistance for installing conservation practices, with a maximum of $50,000 in payments per year. Eligible producers must control land for the contract term and comply with income limitations. NRCS accepts applications year-round, ensuring support for sustainable agriculture.

The HEP Action Agenda aims to engage communities in the NY/NJ Harbor & Estuary Program through in-person sessions this spring and summer. These sessions will gather feedback on community visions for the estuary, addressing challenges and opportunities. Small grants of $2,000-$4,000 will support NGOs in hosting these events, prioritizing collaboration and engagement with overburdened communities. This initiative seeks to develop a new Action Agenda that reflects the needs and priorities of stakeholders for the next decade.

The REPI Challenge, initiated by the DOD's REPI Program, aims to protect critical testing and training capabilities through funded projects. Since 2012, over $193 million has been allocated to 69 initiatives, leveraging more than $512 million in partner contributions. The upcoming 2026 REPI Challenge will focus on strategic mission safeguarding, with up to $20 million available for preventing land use conflicts and enhancing military resilience, thus ensuring the longevity of vital defense capabilities.

SITKA Ecosystem Grants support projects that enhance ecosystems and promote conservation efforts. These grants encourage both grassroots initiatives and larger organizational projects, aiming to improve habitat restoration, biodiversity, and the hunting experience. With funding ranging from $3,000 to $20,000, applicants must be 18 years or older and have relevant experience. The review process is ongoing, and projects should emphasize collaboration and measurable impacts on environmental goals, benefiting both society and ecosystems.

The Sachs Family Foundation Grant aims to enhance the quality of life for economically and educationally disadvantaged individuals and families. The Foundation supports self-sustaining charitable organizations focusing on economic and educational opportunities, particularly in low-income communities in the U.S. and developing countries. Grants are available for various initiatives, including education, housing, and job training, with a keen interest in programs that demonstrate clear potential for sustainability.

Bell's Brewery Small Grassroots Grants support projects focusing on water stewardship across the Great Lakes watershed. Community Action Fund

The Community Action Fund (CAF) grants support non-violent direct actions and organizing efforts that are often urgent and time sensitive. CAF prioritizes frontline, grassroots and community-based efforts that defend Indigenous peoples rights, communities and Nations.

This grant supports Indigenous frontline, grassroots, community-based groups and organizations, Tribes, communities and villages, and individuals leading non-violent direct action or movement-building work in their effort to DEFEND Indigenous People’s rights, and protect their land, air, water, and natural resources.

The New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program (HEP) is inviting proposals for habitat restoration projects that support wildlife in the Hudson-Raritan Estuary. With $250,000 available, HEP aims to distribute funding through two to four grants for projects lasting one or two years. The foundation encourages organizations to submit letters of inquiry detailing their mission, tax status, funding requests, and intended outcomes. They prioritize private land conservation, ecosystem restoration, and innovative policy initiatives, especially in the arid Southwest and Chesapeake Bay regions. Grants typically range from $5,000 to $25,000, with larger amounts available for established partnerships.

The Conservation Connect Fellowship Program, offered by the National Forest Foundation, invites graduate students to engage in hands-on conservation projects.
