The North Dakota Health and Human Services (ND HHS) developed its RHTP to focus on creating new access points, modernizing care delivery and empowering local providers to meet the needs of their communities through sustainable investments. North Dakota’s plan, as indicated in the RHTP application and supporting documents, includes four initiatives:

Community-Based Walking Program Grant

Funding Opportunity

This funding opportunity is positioned under Initiative 1: Make North Dakota Healthy Again and is specifically targeted toward providing leaders of North Dakota’s rural and tribal communities with the opportunity to develop and deliver a community-based walking program. This is the time it takes for behavior to become habit.

Because walking is a highly effective, low-impact exercise that improves cardiovascular health, manages weight, strengthens bones, boosts immunity, enhances mental wellbeing, and improves social connection, we are making funds available to develop and deliver 20 community-based walking programs in North Dakota’s rural and tribal communities.

Zero-Hour Physical Education (PE) Initiative

Funding Opportunity

This funding opportunity is positioned under Initiative 1: Make North Dakota Healthy Again and is specifically targeted toward providing leaders of North Dakota’s rural and tribal, public and private schools, regional education associations and/or school consortiums with the opportunity to develop and deliver a Zero-Hour Physical Education (PE) Initiative.

The North Central Branch John Henry Comstock Award recognizes one graduate student from each of the Entomological Society of America's six branches. This award promotes graduate-level entomology and encourages attendance at the ESA Annual Meeting. Benefits include an all-expense-paid trip to the national meeting, a $500 cash prize, and a certificate presented during the meeting. Eligibility includes current enrollment in a graduate entomology program or recent graduation.

The Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship, awarded by Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, supports first and second-year medical students conducting research over 2 to 12 months. With a total funding of $7,000, students can receive reimbursement for travel expenses up to $1,000 for presenting their findings at national conferences. Eligibility requires enrollment in schools with active AΩA chapters, while those taking a year off for research or holding a PhD are ineligible.

The Good Relatives Collaborative Grants, funded by the Bush Foundation, aim to empower grassroots and Native-led organizations across Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and the 23 Native nations. This initiative provides responsive grants of $50,000 and $100,000 to support community leadership, healing, and cultural revitalization. By fostering collaboration and innovation, the program seeks to address the unique needs of Native communities while promoting accessible philanthropy and sustainable growth.

Coover/Rural Schools Partnership Rural Ready Grant Program

The Louis L. and Julia Dorothy Coover Foundation, a partnership between Community Foundation of the Ozarks and The Commerce Trust Company is proud to offer the Rural Ready grant program. It is designed to give rural schools the flexibility to address the needs and opportunities that matter most in their communities. Rural Ready grants will support projects that prepare students with the knowledge, skills, experiences, and relationships they need to thrive in our ever-changing world while strengthening the communities they call home.

The FY26 Defense Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (DEPSCoR) aims to enhance research capabilities in eligible states by increasing the number of university researchers and institutions conducting relevant science and engineering research. Sponsored by the Department of Defense, this program will fund multiyear awards to promote research aligned with national security needs. Applications require a multi-stage submission process, emphasizing early registration and timely proposal submissions.

Nonprofit victim service agencies in North Dakota can seek funding to sustain and enhance direct services for crime victims and survivors, including personnel and operational costs. North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation VOCA grants may benefit preschool or early childhood programs that provide qualifying support services to young crime victims and their families.

The Albertsons Foundation - Intermountain is dedicated to enhancing community welfare through strategic funding. It supports nonprofit organizations in areas such as health services, diversity inclusion, and education, particularly in the Intermountain region (ID, MT, WY, UT, NV, ND). By partnering with local entities, the foundation ensures that its contributions address essential community needs while promoting access to vital services, fostering inclusivity, and encouraging educational success for all children.

Organizations addressing community needs, crises, or civic leadership in North Dakota can apply for Bush Foundation’s Partnership Fund, with awards up to Up to US $150,000 for flexible, strategic projects. Preschools and early childhood programs may be eligible when collaborating on broader community development, public safety, or humanitarian initiatives in the region.

Community-based organizations in North Dakota that lead creative, community-driven solutions can apply for Strengthen ND’s Bush Prize, with awards of US $250,000 in flexible support. Preschools and early childhood programs that play a central role in community engagement and problem-solving may be competitive candidates for this recognition funding.

The Bill Oban Special Education Scholarship, offered by the North Dakota United Foundation, supports outstanding undergraduate students pursuing careers in special education. This initiative aims to promote educational excellence and quality public service in North Dakota. Applications are accepted annually from December through March, with award notifications typically sent in mid-May. Eligible applicants include North Dakota United members and their dependents, reinforcing the Foundation's commitment to enhancing educational success for future educators.

The Halstenson Family Music Scholarship Fund Grant, offered by the North Dakota United Foundation, supports NDU members with a music teaching license pursuing graduate degrees. Eligible institutions include public, private, and charter schools located in the U.S., with special encouragement for those serving low-income or minority-majority populations.

Project Lead The Way is offering a rolling grant opportunity for schools to implement the PLTW Engineering program for the 2025-2026 academic year and beyond. Eligible institutions include public, private, and charter schools located in the US. Grant recipients will receive funding to cover participation fees and training costs. Total funding amounts to $16,000, distributed over three years. Schools are encouraged to create pathways for students in engineering through this initiative.

The GPCAH Community Pilot Grant supports innovative research and outreach aimed at enhancing the health and safety of agricultural workers in the Midwest. Funded by NIOSH, this program encourages projects focusing on critical issues like mental health, injury prevention, and chemical safety. With grants up to $30,000, it invites collaboration from various organizations, particularly those within the nine-state region. Special emphasis is placed on proposals addressing the needs of underrepresented groups in agriculture.

Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation

The FM Area Foundation is a nonprofit community foundation created by and for the people of Cass County, North Dakota, and Clay County, Minnesota. The FM Area Foundation helps people give back to the causes they care about and ensures the community’s needs are addressed now and in the future. Working in partnership with individuals, families, businesses, and professional advisors, the FM Area Foundation manages more than 500 charitable funds and provides grants to qualified nonprofit organizations and causes.

Pipe Organ Grant

A Component Fund of the FM Area Foundation

Orlee Howell of Jamestown, North Dakota, has established the Howell Pipe Organ Fund to support pipe organs in churches throughout North Dakota.

Orlee has always loved the complex choral sound of church pipe organs. She repaired them herself as a young woman. Later, she and her late husband, Vernon, made their shared musical interest a hobby, seeking out and restoring the often-historic instruments. The Howell Pipe Organ Fund was created as a permanent endowment to ensure the continuation of the music Orlee so enjoys.

All churches in North Dakota are eligible to apply for a grant to support their pipe organ instruments. Grants will be awarded for constructing, installing, or refurbishing pipe organs in churches.

Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation

The FM Area Foundation is a nonprofit community foundation created by and for the people of Cass County, North Dakota, and Clay County, Minnesota. Through the Elmer & Kaya Berg Giving Fund at the FM Area Foundation, this grant round continues their commitment by investing in organizations working in the areas they cared about most.

Guidelines

Nonprofit organizations are invited to apply for funding to support meaningful programs and projects in our community. Organizations may submit one application per calendar year and will be asked to choose a single focus area: Basic Human Needs, Education, Health & Wellness, or Suicide Education & Prevention. Funding is intended for specific, existing programs or projects rather than general operating support. The Creative West Artist Fund supports artists and cultural practitioners across 16 states, providing essential funding and resources to enhance their emotional and financial well-being. Rooted in values of Democracy, Wellness, and Belonging, this initiative offers no-strings-attached funding alongside coaching and community care. It aims to empower artists as vital contributors to the creative economy, while promoting equitable and trust-based grantmaking practices. The fund serves to foster a rich creative community through collaboration and support.

Individuals at least 24 years old in North Dakota seeking to grow their leadership capacity for community change can receive up to US $150,000 over two years for personal development through the Bush Fellowship. Bush Foundation provides North Dakota changemakers, including those working in preschool or early childhood settings, with highly flexible funding to expand their knowledge, skills, and networks.

North Dakota 501(c)(3) nonprofits and government agencies can receive funding for workforce development, sustainability, and thriving community initiatives through Marathon Petroleum. Grants support efforts like vocational and trade education, youth development, environmental conservation, disaster preparedness, and first responder projects, with preference for communities where the company has a significant operational and employee presence.

North Dakota preschools and other 501(c)(3) nonprofits, schools, government entities, and coalitions can seek Community Innovation funding to develop and spread community-focused ideas. Focused on community services, Bush Foundation invites organizations in North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, and nearby Native nations to test solutions, support leaders, and share lessons that can benefit multiple communities.
