Best Recreation Grants for Nonprofits in Ohio

The PACF Community Action Grants support nonprofits in West Virginia through a competitive grant process twice a year. The Tommy Wilson Memorial Grant, established by Dr. George T. Wilson and his wife Irene, honors their son Tommy, who had cerebral palsy. This grant supports recreational programs for individuals with disabilities and aims to positively impact their lives. Applicants must be nonprofit organizations with a successful history of programming for individuals with disabilities. The grant prioritizes programs serving economically disadvantaged individuals and may only fund applicants once every five years.

The Toledo Walleye Transportation Fund offers grants to accredited schools and nonprofit organizations in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, facilitating transportation to Toledo Mud Hens baseball or Walleye hockey games. Aiming to eliminate financial barriers, the fund provides awards up to $1,000 for eligible applicants. Faculty members from colleges and universities are encouraged to nominate one outstanding student per major, ensuring that the next generation of health educators is celebrated for their achievements and contributions to the field.

The SHAPE America: Joy of Effort Award recognizes dedicated individuals who exemplify the spirit of commitment and passion in health and physical education. Awardees are current SHAPE America members with at least three years of membership, demonstrating excellence in teaching, coaching, or leadership. This prestigious award celebrates those who have made significant contributions to the field, inspiring others to lead healthy, active lives through their efforts in education and advocacy.

The Adapted PE/Activity Program of the Year Award recognizes outstanding community-based initiatives aimed at enhancing the physical capabilities of individuals with disabilities. Organized by SHAPE America, this award highlights programs that provide inclusive physical education and recreational opportunities, ensuring that all participants can engage in healthy, active lifestyles. By showcasing best practices, the award promotes innovation and advocacy for individuals with disabilities, fostering an environment of inclusion and support in physical activity.

The J.M. Heberlig/B.J. Helterbran Scholarship Fund, established by dedicated educators, supports Pennsylvania residents pursuing degrees in Art Education or Recreation & Parks. This scholarship aims to alleviate the financial burden on students entering their second, third, or fourth year at a 4-year institution. With a focus on academic achievement, a minimum GPA of 2.8 overall and 3.0 in the major is required, alongside a demonstrated commitment to education and community service.

GLCCF Schreck Family Soccer Scholarship

To award annually a scholarship to a qualified applicant who intends to pursue education toward a 4-year college degree.

The Knox County Foundation Small Grant aims to enhance the quality of life in Mount Vernon and Knox County. With a legacy of over 75 years, the Foundation prioritizes charitable giving that addresses education, health, and community development. It supports innovative projects that fulfill unmet needs and encourages collaborations among local nonprofits. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) organizations and public entities. The Foundation prefers to act as a funding partner rather than the sole source.

The Daniel and Susan Pfau Foundation, established in 1994, focuses on enhancing education, health, cultural experiences, and social welfare for youth with disabilities and economic challenges in the Greater Cincinnati area. It supports arts organizations and recreation initiatives, prioritizing programs that help young individuals realize their potential. Eligible applicants must be recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofits and demonstrate benefits to specific counties in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. The Foundation encourages collaboration with other donors for project funding.

Our community members support hundreds of local students every year through various scholarships facilitated by the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.

Established in memory of Melinda “Mindy” Henning.

The Hardin County Community Foundation offers grants to 501(c)(3) organizations that benefit Hardin County residents. The foundation prioritizes innovative projects that address community needs in areas like education, health, and arts. It seeks to enhance the quality of life, encourage volunteerism, and ensure efficient distribution of social services. However, it does not fund operating expenses, political activities, or projects already in progress. The foundation aims to create long-term community resources and support self-sustaining initiatives.

The Bryan Area Foundation Grant Program supports tax-exempt organizations that enhance life in Williams County. Established in 1969, the Foundation has invested over $13.4 million in community projects and scholarships. Applicants must schedule a meeting with the Foundation's President/CEO 30 days prior to the grant deadline. The Foundation favors innovative proposals that address emerging needs and promote community involvement while avoiding funding for operating expenses and projects already in progress.

Theresa Alessandra Russo Foundation Inc

The Theresa Foundation honors the memory of Theresa Alessandra Russo by touching the lives of children with special needs and their families. The Foundation fosters each child’s unique abilities by supporting programs focusing on art, music, dance, drama, and recreation.

The Theresa Foundation has a vision of the world where artistic expression and physical recreation are just as important to adults as they are to children. We believe in a world where every child, regardless of ability or challenging conditions, is free to communicate through and participate in every art or recreational activity. A society without art is a society without soul. Art enables us to express our inner thoughts, fears, joys, and sadness.  

The Theresa Foundation Grant Program

The Theresa Foundation Grant Program is committed to providing financial support for programs in art, music, dance, drama, or recreation that are designed specifically for children with special needs in order to ensure that no one is excluded from these activities. 

We believe that every individual should have the opportunity to participate in art, music, dance, drama or recreation if they so choose. Our grant program works to provide direct funding for the success of these activities, while also promoting an environment of acceptance and inclusiveness where all can take part without judgment or fear. 

As of 2026, the Theresa Foundation has provided over $3,300,000 in grant funding for over 200 programs in 29 states throughout the country and 4 international grants. With your help we can continue to make a difference in the lives of those with special needs by providing them access to enriching experiences that would otherwise be out of reach.

You are steps away from creating an opportunity to receive full or partial funding of your charitable organization. So that you use your time wisely, we offer the following advice for your efforts:

• As a family foundation, we are prohibited from funding individuals or any entity that is not an IRS-recognized Section 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity or a Section 509(a)(1), (2), or (3) support organization. Thus, while we cannot award a scholarship to an individual, we can fund a 501(c)(3) charity that provides such scholarships.

• If you qualify as a Section 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization or a support organization pursuant to Section 509(a)(1-3), we will need the IRS Determination Letter confirming as much, as well as a statement signed by your organization’s President or Chief Executive Officer verifying that your organization’s purposes, structure, and operations have not changed substantially since the date of the IRS’s Determination Letter.

• If you are a “supporting organization” under IRS Code section 509(a)(1-3), please provide a list of the public charities that you support. Please also advise whether you are a Type I, Type II, or Type III supporting organization. If you are a Type III supporting organization, please advise whether you are “functionally integrated” with your supported public charity and provide an explanation of that relationship.

Supported Charities

The Vineyard family has historically provided funding for family-related charities such as the Ronald McDonald House, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, pediatric hospitals, autism-related organizations, and youth recreational leagues. The Foundation looks forward to continuing this support and extending itself to educational, research, and cultural experiences that focus on the needs of children and their parents.

The State Recreational Boating Safety (RBS) Grant Program, administered by the US Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Coast Guard, aims to enhance safety and enjoyment on America's waterways. This federal program provides grants to designated state agencies to reduce boating accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Although not open to the public, it plays a critical role in ensuring safe recreational boating experiences by implementing effective safety measures, thereby promoting public welfare and environmental protection.

The Henry County Ohio Community Foundation Grant supports local nonprofit organizations by providing funding sourced from interest income on invested funds. Since its inception in 1986, the Foundation has awarded over $100,000 in grants quarterly, focusing on enhancing education, community betterment, and the arts. Preference is given to projects with existing matching funds, and grant requests are considered four times a year, aiming to address emerging community needs.

The Covington Education Foundation Grant supports educational enrichment projects in Covington, Ohio. Non-profit organizations and Covington Exempted Village Schools can apply quarterly for funding to enhance academic achievement, performing and fine arts, athletics, and general enrichment programs. Applications are reviewed in January, April, July, and October, with deadlines on the 15th of the preceding month. This initiative aims to foster community engagement and improve educational opportunities for local residents.

The JAH Foundation, established in 2012 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, is dedicated to supporting community organizations aligned with Christian principles. It provides financial assistance primarily to 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations that serve the poor, disabled individuals, and promote Catholic education and disaster relief, focusing on Summit County and surrounding areas. The foundation's commitment to community service reflects the founders' belief in giving back through various charitable initiatives.

The Hudson Community Foundation offers competitive community grants to enhance the quality of life in Hudson, Ohio. Since 2000, over $500,000 has been awarded to support nonprofit organizations in various areas, including art, culture, historical preservation, social services, and youth education. The foundation aims to address current community needs while anticipating future challenges, making strategic investments for lasting impact.

The Minster Community Fund supports civic projects, education, recreation, health, conservation, and the arts within the Minster School District. It aims to enhance community resources through unique projects, volunteer involvement, and efficient collaboration among organizations. Grants are awarded based on available funds, with a focus on addressing diverse community needs and promoting innovative solutions. The Fund encourages proposals that cannot be funded by other sources, strengthening local non-profits and fostering citizen participation.

The Greater Versailles Area Foundation Fund aims to enhance the quality of life for citizens in the Versailles School District by supporting charitable, educational, and recreational initiatives. Grants are awarded to projects that address community needs, helping to establish new opportunities and sustain existing programs. The foundation prioritizes public benefit, ensuring funds are used responsibly and ethically, without personal gain or political influence, thereby fostering community development and engagement.

The Upper Arlington Community Foundation's Good Neighbor Fund Grant provides emergency financial assistance of up to $3,000 for Upper Arlington residents facing unforeseen circumstances that threaten their stability. Established in 2017, this fund acts as a crucial safety net, ensuring that individuals can access support for urgent needs like living expenses, utilities, and medical fees. The grants committee evaluates applications based on sustainability and collaboration, aiming to foster ongoing community support.
