Our Mission
Our Mission is to foster pathways to success in globally competitive STEM careers for students in the United States.
We want to help ensure that the United States remains a global thought leader in all forms of science, math, and technology by promoting projects which encourage, enhance and advance STEM education in this country and to promote projects which provide career opportunities for individuals with STEM education backgrounds.
The Foundation, formed in 2022, seeks to give students and educators more resources for developing and participating in STEM-based, hands-on learning. As a Foundation, we want to support STEM education programs that are making a difference for students regardless of their background or resources. We want every student in America to have enough exposure to STEM from an early age and to transform our attitudes around STEM subjects. We are working towards changing the narrative that promotes STEM subjects as challenging and difficult to the idea that a broad knowledge of STEM education is imperative for socioeconomic and economic freedom as an adult, for all.
Programs & Partners
STEM Encouragement
It all begins with an idea. We support educational opportunities ranging in age from children through post-doctoral candidates and beyond to promote STEM learning and initiatives that seek to increase awareness and success in STEM careers in the United States.
Environmental & Climate
We will support Innovative Environmental Projects (IEPs) that utilize interdisciplinary research to identify and address critical environmental problems with cutting-edge, innovative solutions that are scalable and replicable.
Scientific Research
Contribute to advancements in biomedical research and innovation to accelerate the progress in medical research and drug treatment development - specifically for high-mortality, under-funded areas of need such as pancreatic and colon cancers.
Urban & Community Entrepreneurship
Advancing entrepreneurship in moderate-income and underserved communities to help business leaders of today and tomorrow prosper. The focus of this program is to help foster economic empowerment by investing in organizations focusing on one individual, one job, and one business at a time.

- Expand the foundation of knowledge relating to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure of Alzheimer’s disease
- Stimulate economic activity in the state in areas related to Alzheimer’s disease research
Researchers at any university or research institute in Florida are eligible to apply. The following types of applications may be considered for funding:
- Investigator-initiated research grants
- Institutional research grants
- Pre-doctoral and post-doctoral research fellowships
- Collaborative research grants, including those that advance the finding of cures through basic or applied research
Priority will be given to project proposals that focus on:
- therapeutic strategies for dealing with behavioral and social needs of persons with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers;
- the discovery and validation of a broad spectrum of potential therapeutic targets or novel therapeutic strategies, or discoveries which provide novel insights into the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease, and/or identify novel biomarkers;
- stimulate a consortium of clinical centers to conduct high quality clinical research studies of greater breadth than described in priority two;
- epidemiologic studies to improve our understanding of genetic, epigenetic, and acquired neurodegenerative, cardiac, and vascular disorders that result in cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s Disease and how these conditions affect Floridians; and
- support for physician or postdoctoral fellowship training in Alzheimer’s disease research. Refer to the Research Priorities section of this FOA for more information.

The intent of this grant mechanism is to provide interim support for promising investigator-initiated research projects that have been highly rated by national panels of peer reviewers in recent federal competitions but were not funded due to budgetary constraints. In the case of this competition, no more than 18 months may pass between having received a funding decision by a federal agency and submission of an application to the program. Allowable federal competitions include but are not limited to those conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, the National Science Foundation, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the United States Food and Drug Administration. To be eligible, applicants must have submitted a multi-year, investigator-initiated research application to a federal agency (such as an NIH R type). The applicant must have received a peer-review summary statement indicating high scientific merit. For purposes of this competition, “high scientific merit” is a percentile ranking within five percentile points of the respective federal funding stream’s pay line or a score of two or better for federal funding streams that do not provide a percentile rank with peer-review results.

- Improve both research and treatment through greater pediatric enrollment in clinical trials networks
- Reduce the impact of pediatric cancer on disproportionately impacted individuals
Research Focus
Applications submitted in response to this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) must be responsive to one of the following areas of focus.
- Prevention and Treatment
- Screening
- Obesity
- Treatment-Related Morbidities
- Technology Transfer Feasibility (TTF)
- Investigational New Drug or Investigational Device Exemption
Efforts to foster collaborations among institutions, researchers, and community practitioners should be included, when possible. Preference will be given to applications that address at least one of the cancers listed in the Research Priorities section of this FOA.
Funding Information
Applicants must request funding in the preceding grant categories to pursue research in the areas of focus outlined in the Research Focus section of this FOA. Preference will be given to applications that address the priorities listed in the Research Priorities section of this FOA. Specific grant funding amounts are available for each grant category.
Grant Categories
Applications in response to this FOA must align to a grant category (depending on the grant program) to pursue an area of focus from the Research Focus section of this FOA. Applications for research infrastructure grants that are reviewed and assigned exceptional scientific merit will be considered for preferential funding.
The grant categories are: 1) Bridge; 2) Discovery Science; 3) Emerging Therapeutics and Technologies; 4) Equipment; 5) Multicenter Clinical Trials; 6) New Investigator Research (NIR); 7) High-Risk, High-Reward Clinical Research; 8) High-Risk, High-Reward Discovery Science; 9) Non-Typical Clinical Trials/Socio-Behavioral Research; 10) Research Infrastructure
Bella Initiative Grant Categories: Research Infrastructure
Eligible organizations may submit an infrastructure application in at least one of the following six areas: tissue banking, bioinformatics, genomics, diagnostic imaging, disproportionately impacted individuals, or quality indicator systems. The Department is particularly interested in research involving quality indicator systems, when this is linked with other priorities, such as increasing the number of Florida research networks, external funding for research infrastructure, and large-scale projects, including but not limited to National Cancer Institute grants. Organizations will only be permitted to be the lead on one application but may be collaborators on applications submitted by other organizations. When organizations collaborate on more than one infrastructure application, they need to describe how the projects are different and do not overlap.
Applications for research infrastructure grants that are reviewed and assigned exceptional scientific merit will be considered for preferential funding.
