Scholarship Information
Currently, The Community Foundation administers 75 separate endowed scholarship funds. Established by individuals or organizations, these funds help area students achieve their academic and career-oriented goals.
Scholarships through the Community Foundation support individuals of all ages who reside within the Dan River Region – Danville, VA; Pittsylvania and Halifax counties, VA; and Caswell County, NC. In 2025, we awarded more than $370,000 to 152 students.
John Watson Daniel Scholarship
Open applications for graduates from the City of Danville, Pittsylvania, Halifax or Caswell Counties with a preference for students who are descendants of employees or retirees of John W. Daniel Construction Company.

Open applications for female graduates of public and private schools in Pittsylvania County.
Publix Cares Scholarship
Publix Cares Scholarship was established by Publix Super Markets, Inc., a Florida corporation, in partnership with UNCF to provide scholarships to eligible students attending at one of the following selected institutions.

Tennessee State UniversitySelected student will receive up to $2,000 need-based scholarship in the fall 2026.

Open applications for graduates of public and private schools in Danville or Pittsylvania County, with a preference for Pittsylvania County graduates. Also available for graduate study.

National Welch’s Fred Killian Memorial Scholarship
The National Welch’s Fred Killian Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 by the National Grape Cooperative and Welch’s to honor the memory of Fred Killian, a Washington State grower.

Grace Ekman Whitley Scholarship
Grace Ekman Whitley taught school in Leavenworth, Manson, Tonasket and Wenatchee High Schools. She had no children, but she loved the children in her classrooms as her own. This scholarship was established at the Community Foundation in order to support graduating seniors from Cascade, Manson, Tonasket and Wenatchee High Schools. Each year, the committee seeks to award students who demonstrate perseverance and commitment, work ethic, strong academic improvement, motivation, and who have overcome disadvantages.

Silver Star Chapter #93 Order of the Eastern Star Scholarship
The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world to which both women and men may belong. The organization’s membership is comprised of women and men who sincerely reflect the spirit of fraternal love and the desire to work together for good. Silver Star Chapter #93 established this scholarship as a means of fulfilling the mission of the organization to support the local community and benefit fellow mankind.

At The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County, we make it easy to give back to the community we all love through comprehensive and trusted charitable giving. We partner with donors, professional advisors and nonprofits to fund local needs through community endowments and support to charities. The Community Foundation is a devoted advocate for the vitality and well-being of the Rappahannock River Region. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that manages and distributes charitable giving in the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline, and the City of Fredericksburg.
Scholarships
One of The Community Foundation’s strategies for preserving and growing the quality of life in our region is supporting higher education for area students. Generous individuals and families, companies and organizations establish endowed scholarship funds and the proceeds from these funds benefit deserving students. Donors work with foundation staff to determine appropriate criteria for each fund. The Community Foundation currently administers more than fifty scholarship funds.
Dr. Lillie Pitman Scholarship Fund
Dr. Lillie Pitman practically grew up in the California periodontal office where her mom worked. She was inspired by a mentor to shoot for the stars and made an impact with her warmth and acts of service along her journey. After an impressive education and living elsewhere, in 2014 Lillie established her home and practice in Fredericksburg, known for providing care along with her husband at Synergy Periodontics and Implants. She was an active member of the Rappahannock Rotary club, the Fredericksburg Full Gospel Fellowship church and served as president of the Virginia Society of Periodontists.
The Dr. Lillie Pitman Scholarship Fund will benefit first generation college students who are looking to pursue careers in healthcare from area schools.

The George D. Taylor Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was established at The Community Foundation in August 2013 upon transfer of the George D. Taylor Education Trust from StellarOne Bank. It had been created there through Mr. Taylor’s will. After insuring that his late wife, Edith, would be cared for, George Taylor intended the remainder of his estate to support the higher education students from Stafford County Schools or Fredericksburg City Schools, who are high achieving and have the greatest need.

The George Toliver “Swish 21” Scholarship Fund
George Toliver attended King George High School 1966 – 1969 and was a multi-sports star in Basketball and Baseball.
As a senior for the Foxes, he was a Co-Captain of the 20-1 State Runner-up Basketball team, led the team in scoring with an 18.1 ppg average and was First Team All-District. He was also MVP on the baseball team and in 1969 graduated with honors.
George attended James Madison University where he led the basketball team in scoring 3 out of 4 seasons. He was the 1st player in JMU history to score 1,000 points. He was involved in community service and led a Girl’s AAU Basketball program for 10 years. In 2004 he coached a team to a National Championship.
In 1991 he was inducted into the JMU Hall of Fame and was also inducted into the King George Sports Hall of Fame 2012 (individual) and in 2013 (as member of the 1969 Basketball team). George went on to referee Major College and International Basketball. He then had a 14-year career as a referee in the National Basketball Association.
The scholarship name - “SWISH 21” (Success With Integrity Spirit Humility) represents his proficiency in shooting a basketball through the net. “21” was his KGHS basketball jersey number. By establishing this scholarship, George would like to annually assist the recipient pursue the educational experience to eventually make their positive SWISH contributions to society.
