Established in 1974 as a nonprofit U.S. Regional Arts Organization (USRAO), Creative West was founded on the belief that place matters to the creative process. National Arts Futures Fellowship

The National Arts Futures Fellowship (NAFF) is a six-month virtual leadership development program rooted in democracy, wellness, and belonging. It calls on early and mid-career arts and culture professionals from all backgrounds to step into their power as civic leaders and cultural innovators—building the skills, networks, and vision needed to shape a future where creativity drives justice, care, and connection.

Fellows join a national network committed to strengthening public life, nurturing collective wellness, and fostering deep belonging across communities. Together, they learn, experiment, and act—advancing a shared vision of leadership that is sustainable, community-rooted, and future-focused.

Each fellow enters NAFF with a Personal Action Project (PAP)—a concrete idea they will develop and implement with support from peers, coaches, guest experts, and flexible seed funding of $250–$1,000. Projects may include launching a cultural initiative, organizing a community campaign, supporting artist-led advocacy, seeking a public leadership role, or piloting another form of civic or community action. Throughout the fellowship, each project evolves through coaching, peer feedback, strategy sessions, and real-world experimentation. Fellows conclude the program by sharing their project, leadership growth, and next steps at the National Fellows Summit.

What’s New in Cohort Two?

• Cohort Two expands NAFF from six to seven monthly sessions and adds two new elements that support fellows in moving their Personal Action Projects from development into implementation:
• Seed Funding: Fellows may request $250–$1,000 in flexible funding to test, pilot, or implement their projects during the fellowship.
• Artists Thrive Framework: Fellows will use the framework to assess their work, identify opportunities for growth, and strengthen artist-led advocacy, collaboration, and community impact.

What kinds of projects are supported?

Examples: Running for office, launching cultural programs, organizing campaigns, supporting policies. Projects can be local, regional, or national in scope.

Local governments and 501(c)(3) nonprofits in Washington providing social services, education, medical care, or community engagement programs may be eligible for support. Grants from Foster Foundation help organizations serving Pacific Northwest communities strengthen basic human needs, literacy and mentoring, health and hospice care, arts and culture, recreation, and civic engagement, especially for underserved children, women, and seniors.

Local government and other 501(c) public charities in Washington supporting children, youth, and families can seek funding for programs in civic engagement, education, social services, health, arts, sports, and enrichment. Grants from Korum for Kids Foundation help South Puget Sound–area initiatives that improve quality of life, especially for those facing illness, disability, mental health, or basic needs challenges.

With a mission to support community needs, Muckleshoot Indian Tribe provides Washington nonprofits, government agencies, and public schools with grants for education, health and human services, culture, arts, environmental work, and civic engagement. Awards of US $1,500 - US $5,000 are reviewed quarterly, with one grant allowed per agency every 12 months.

Local government and other eligible organizations in Washington can seek funding to coordinate and strengthen a statewide developmental disabilities community advocacy coalition. Washington-based nonprofit organizations and Sovereign Nations running community-led policy or issue campaigns in Washington can apply for the Campaigns, Litigation, Issues & Policy (CLIP) Fund from Inatai Foundation. Funding supports ballot measures, litigation, legislative advocacy, grassroots organizing, and related research, and may benefit local governments partnering with civic engagement and racial justice efforts.

AmeriCorps Focus Areas

The National and Community Service Act of 1990, as amended by the Serve America Act, emphasizes measuring the impact of service and focusing on a core set of issue areas. To carry out Congress’s intent, maximize the impact of investment in national service, and achieve the goals laid out in the Strategic Plan (2022-2026), AmeriCorps has the following Focus Areas:

• Disaster Services: Helping individuals and communities prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of disasters and increase community resiliency.
• Economic Opportunity: Improving the economic well-being and security of underserved individuals.
• Education: Improving educational outcomes for underserved people, especially children. AmeriCorps is particularly interested in program designs that support youth engagement and service learning as strategies to achieve high educational outcomes.
• Environmental Stewardship: Supporting communities to become more resilient through measures that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve land and water, increase renewable energy use and improve at-risk ecosystems, especially in underserved households and communities.

Serve Washington’s AmeriCorps Continuation Grants support year two or three of a three-year grant cycle for currently funded programs, not new or recompeting applicants.

Local government entities and 501(c)(3) organizations in Washington working where Cox Enterprises operates can apply for James M Cox Foundation support for capital projects or special initiatives.
