Community Foundation of Henderson County's Scholarship Program began in 1984. Thanks to the generosity of passionate donors, over 2,000 traditional and non-traditional students have been provided more than $10 million in scholarships to pursue higher education.

Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited William L. Arbuckle Memorial Scholarship

Recipients of this award must be accepted to an accredited degree granting college or university within the Southern Appalachian Region. Recipients must be pursuing an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in the field of fisheries, aquaculture, freshwater biology, or other related fields. 

The J.W. Couch Foundation Grant focuses on supporting Wildlife Conservation nonprofit organizations that align with their mission of community betterment and environmental protection. The NHLBI Career Transition Award (K22) program supports postdoctoral fellows in transitioning their research to extramural institutions. The program includes a mentored intramural phase (up to two years) followed by an extramural phase (three years), totaling five years of support. Applications have multiple deadlines, including October 12, 2024, and February 12, 2025, among others. Successful transition depends on the awardee's progress during the mentored phase, evaluated by NHLBI.

The Big Bets Fellowship: Economic Opportunity in the United States is a transformative 4-month program designed to empower emerging leaders to tackle economic challenges head-on. With a focus on innovative solutions for job creation, affordable housing, and equitable access to resources, the fellowship equips participants with essential skills and a supportive network. The initiative aims to drive systemic change and promote sustainable economic prosperity, addressing inequalities while fostering resilient communities across the nation.

The Therapeutic Giving program by Johnson & Johnson focuses on funding initiatives that enhance patient access to treatment and advance health equity, particularly in immunology. Eligible nonprofit organizations can apply for support aimed at improving health outcomes through innovative programs. The initiative prioritizes measurable impacts over fundraising activities, emphasizing the importance of addressing healthcare disparities and promoting disease awareness efforts for diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.

The James M. Cox Foundation Grant offers support to nonprofit organizations focused on conservation, early childhood education, family empowerment, and health. Organizations must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt and located in areas where Cox Enterprises operates. Grant applications are accepted year-round, with deadlines before Trustee meetings. The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) is comprised of more than 6,000 men and women who work in the Division of Highways; Division of Motor Vehicles; Division of Public Transit; the Public Port Authority; the Parkways, Economic Development and Tourism Authority (W.V. Turnpike); the State Rail Authority; and the Aeronautics Commission.

Section 5310 Mobility Management Grant

Title 49 U.S.C. 5310 (CFDA Number 20.513) amended by MAP 21, authorizes a formula grant assistance program for the enhanced mobility of seniors and individuals with disabilities. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA), as well as, the West Virginia Division of Multimodal Transportations Facilities - Transit (Public Transit), refers to this program as “the Section 5310 Program.” FTA, on behalf of the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, apportions the funds appropriated annually to the States based on an administrative formula that considers the number of seniors and individuals with disabilities in each state.

The goal of the Section 5310 Program is to enhance mobility for seniors and individuals with disabilities throughout the country. Towards this goal, FTA provides financial assistance for transportation services planned, designed and carried out to meet the special transportation needs of seniors and individuals with disabilities in all areas - urbanized, small urban, and rural. The program requires coordination with other federally assisted programs and services in order to make the most efficient use of Federal resources.

The Sam and Maud Turner & Carole Ann Turner Memorial Scholarship, managed by the Beckley Area Foundation, aims to support graduating seniors from select high schools in Southern West Virginia. This scholarship encourages students to pursue higher education, offering financial assistance tailored to their specific needs and academic goals. By fostering educational opportunities, the foundation reinforces its commitment to enhancing community welfare and student success in the region.

The Robert and Margaret Sayre Scholarship, managed by the Beckley Area Foundation, supports non-traditional students aged 25 and older in their pursuit of higher education. This initiative is part of the Foundation's broader mission to enhance community welfare through charitable giving. By offering tailored scholarships, the Foundation aims to empower local students, ensuring they have the resources needed to achieve their educational aspirations and contribute positively to Southern West Virginia.

The Physician Assistant Scholarship, managed by the Beckley Area Foundation, aims to support students from Raleigh County, WV, pursuing a degree as a physician's assistant at accredited West Virginia colleges. This scholarship considers both merit and financial need, providing essential financial assistance to help local students achieve their educational aspirations. Through a universal application process, eligible students can access multiple scholarship opportunities with ease, ensuring a streamlined approach to funding their higher education.

The Natalie Jo Smith Memorial Scholarship, managed by the Beckley Area Foundation, supports students pursuing higher education at Mount Vernon Nazarene University in nursing, education, or ministry. Applicants must be West Virginia high school graduates, meet the university's academic standards, and demonstrate active participation in the Nazarene Church within the West Virginia South or North District. This scholarship aims to empower local students and foster their educational ambitions.

The John W. Eye Family Scholarship, managed by the Beckley Area Foundation, aims to support college juniors and seniors from Raleigh, Fayette, Summers, Monroe, or Wyoming Counties in West Virginia. Eligible candidates must be enrolled full-time in a Business or Finance degree program with a minimum GPA of 2.5. This scholarship reflects the foundation's commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and fostering student success in the region.
